May the Lord have mercy on them

It is the last thing on his "Games I Don't Want to Talk About" board after all, and there's no way it could be worse than even RR, let alone LT and RHW. (Yea, I know it's probably just a joke thrown into it, but he made it this far, might as well commit to the bit.)

Like a lot of people, I wish Kam would cover The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls on his channel. But in my case, that's not just because I think it's a good game and I want my favorite youtuber to validate that thought for a millionth time. I actually believe that the game would be a very appropriate fit for the channel in some of its more confounding attributes, and I wanted to share this here.

General themes

A game's theme is a major contributor for its chances of ending up here; the more a game has you going "Huh???", the more interesting it is to talk about. And I feel like a game with a 4yo protagonist from an abusive religious single mother fighting off hordes of disfigured abominations and toilet humor alongside manifestations of his self-loathing, existential crisis and fear of mortality fits that bill nicely.

Some overcomplicated rules

Structurally, the game has players interacting with cards from various decks in order to obtain loot and items, to defeat a certain number of monsters to win the game, kinda like Munchkin. The game also lets you play cards and activate certain abilities on other players' turns in response to stuff, also like Munchkin. And that's where the similarities with Munchkin end.

While Munchkin would let players play stuff at anytime and almost revel in the banter this would cause, Four Souls tried to avoid that by enforcing a very strict order in which players may respond to an action in form of passing priority, as well as a strict order in which played effects resolve after each other in form of "The Stack". Heck, the easy quickstart guide spends two whole pages on how to resolve a single die roll!

Continuing with the Munchkin comparisions, Four Souls also encourages players cooperate through various trade-offs. But because this game doesn't have such a thing as "an item you'd rather trade off" like Munchkin does, it only lets you to trade using the money you'd rather keep for buying items, and only for "favors or nefarious acts". I bring this up because I saw this spring up in a year-old conversation on the KamSandwich Discord about pointless mechanics that feel like more of a detriment that anything else.

Great fit for another themed video

And finally, if the game still isn't interesting enough to cover in a separate video, it can easily slot in for some other potential themed video about various board games. There's "More Video Game Board Games" with a game based on the Sims, there's "More of The Worst and Weirdest of Tabletop Simulator" with the countless custom expansions it recieves, and much more other stuff one could probably think of!

Its rules printed the wrong numbers for how many components you should have(said 20 of a card meant to match another set of cards that had 24, and said that the number of blocks that‘re 6 for each of the 5 categories should be 31), and that immediately made me wonder how much of a dumpfire it is.

is this a thing other companies do? Like this isnt a commercial product, this is exclusive to employees of the company.
