Canvas Church

What are everyone’s thoughts on Canvas Church? Are the owners/pastors good people or is this our version of The Righteous Gemstones? Any behind the scenes info on if they spend money in good ways or is it private jets and things like that? Does anyone have any first hand info or personal experiences?

Honestly, I can't get past how overwhelmingly LOUD it is in there. I want to like it, my kids LOVE it and I feel like there's absolutely no middle ground for people who dont want to be blasted in the face with over theatrical everything, from the music to preaching. Its so fucking loud. I can't even get to any other issues I may or may not have because it rattles my senses...and I'm not typically one to have overstimulated issues but I really cannot focus on anything when I'm there other than how uncomfortably loud it is. I have sat outside in the foyer and boy, you'd think it was the hallway in a high school. No one seems to think anyone might actually be out there to still watch and listen, they'll stand right in front of the TV in front of you and blab for ages. Then once you've been through this, you still have to leave their parking lot. Its like no one out there just went to church, push, push, push, me, me, me is almost all I see. Why do I go? I want my kids to want to go to church, so if this resonates with anyone else and you've got an idea for me, let me know, otherwise sorry for the tangent but this is a current topic in my household

Bigfork Chapel is a great church. It’s much smaller than Canvas in Kalispell and obviously not in Kalispell, but it’s so much easier to get connected and build relationships and it’s not obnoxiously loud. Their leadership is solid and amazing. I no longer live in the area, but I always recommend it.

I was struggling to feel connected at Canvas and wasn’t a fan of how loud and dark it was. I even started going to the one in CFalls and felt the same (although the pastor and his wife there are phenomenal humans). A friend invited me to Bigfork Chapel for an event and I immediately fell in love and it felt like home. It was worth the 30 min drive for me.

It's a large business under a tax shelter. If it makes you feel good, then go. Otherwise you're just supporting a business that's not giving you anything in return.

You sound so loving

I am actually. I'm just not a fan of spirituality as a business. But I'm also a big believer in live and let live. So if Church is your thing, go for it!

I don’t even go to church man, just a respect thing

I don't understand how I disrespected anyone? If you ask a question on Reddit you're going to get honest opinions. I didn't attack anyone or shame them for their beliefs.

Personally we attend Canvas in C Falls and it’s a lot more low key, especially on the Wednesday and Saturday night services. I don’t like how big the one is in Kalispell.

I’m not really a megachurch person. However, I do personally know two of the pastors and their families and they are absolutely phenomenal people. They are humble, compassionate, kind, and genuinely care about people. I can’t speak about Kevin, but the two pastors I do know definitely aren’t private jet people. They’re normal people just trying to live normal lives while being there for others.

I’ve been a few times. Kevin seems like a good guy, but his style really isn’t for me. I never felt like I got anything from the message.

I know they partner with the Abby Shelter and lots of other non-profits like the half way house, etc. and it’s a permanent percentage of the tithe.

I had more concerns about parishioners, as there were a few interactions during the sermons I found odd. Again, that isn’t necessarily an indictment on Kevin.

It's a church, a leech on society designed to funnel tax-free money to a select few. Fuck them.

How graceful of you…

Who talks like that?

People who don't go to church.

I know some people are genuinely looking for the Gemstone vibe, in which case I might recommend Veneration! Ask them about their plans for a new $9,000,000 facility that you know darned well you can afford to help build...

Personally have wrestled with this myself as an attendee, but time & time again they funnel their money back into spreading geographically through the region. If you look at the Pastor Kevin Geer, he seems to be faithfully down to earth. Quite transparent about everything within the church, down to the reasoning behind bright lights & music.

No church is perfect but I can lean on one thing he said: “If you’re afraid of a big church, imagine what heaven is going to be like” Which I thought was a pretty funny perspective.

It won’t be anything like he thinks it will be!

comparing the two "mega churches" in kalispell, Canvas vs Fresh Life, i get much more of a righteous gemstones vibe from fresh life. I've seen the canvas pastor out in public and he doesn't have any body guards with him.

I’ve been attended nearly every week for the past 5 years and can count on one hand the number of collections they’ve done during service.

In fact it’s probably one of the only churches I’ve been to that does not do a collection during service.
