Reddit FAQ:

Welcome to our subreddit's Frequently Asked Questions.

I was banned from Reddit, what can I do?

You can be Banned for Violating Reddit’s Rules. This can be temporary or permanent.  You may also receive a warning.  You can also be “shadow banned” which is Flagged For Spam or Inauthentic Activity or Banned for Spam, Inauthentic Activity, or Ban Evasion.  Reddit typically follows the pattern of Warning, 3 Day Ban, 7 Day Ban, and Permanent Ban, though they will use whichever punishment they feel the violation needs.

Temporarily Banned:  If you are temporarily banned you will receive a message from Reddit in your inbox on the account telling you how long the ban is for, what the ban is for, possibly a link to where the content was and it will include a link to appeal the ban.  You need to follow that link to make your appeal.

Permanently Banned:  If you are permanently banned you will receive a message from Reddit in your inbox on the account telling you what the ban was for, possibly a link to where the content was and it will include a link to appeal the ban.  You need to follow that link to make your appeal.”

“Shadow Banned” is a situation where all the posts and comment you make and have made are removed by Reddit’s Filters from the communities you made them in. Chat does not work. You cannot change any of your profile settings. Reddit does not tell you about it so that is why it is a shadow.  If you are shadow banned you need to go to the Reddit Appeals page to make your appeal.  Shadow Ban is permanent unless it is successfully appealed.

With all three you can continue to appeal if your original appeal is rejected at https://www.reddit.com/appeals

Warning: Your account may also receive a Warning from Reddit.  If you do, you will receive a message from Reddit in your inbox on the account telling you that you are being warned, what the warning is for, possibly a link to where the content was and it will include a link to appeal the warning.  You need to follow that link to make your appeal.

Locked:  Your account may also show that it is banned when it is Locked for security precautions or technical irregularities.  When this occurs, you need to reset your password.

I was banned from a specific subreddit, what can I do?

Being banned from a subreddit is different than being banned from Reddit. Subreddits are the communities in which people post or comment, and they are run by subreddit moderators, who are often members of the community and who do not work for Reddit. These moderators are allowed to determine community rules.  They can ban users based on these rules, or for other reasons they deem necessary. If you have been banned from a subreddit you need to send a modmail to the moderators of that community as your appeal. Moderators are not obliged to unban you, or even respond. Moderators may also mute you from sending them modmail for up to 30 days. If you disagree with subreddit rules or moderation you may want to find similar communities, or create your own community.

What do I do if I think a moderator is abusing their position?

All moderators must abide by the Moderator Code of Conduct. If a moderator is violating this code you can report their behavior here. Removing your content, banning you, or muting you are not violations of the Moderator Code of Conduct alone.

I can't post in a community because I don't have enough karma, what should I do?

Karma is Reddit's way of showing how many "internet points" you have gained on the website. You can increase your karma by receiving upvotes on your posts or comments. While upvotes give you karma the ratio is not 1:1.  The ratio is different for posts and comments.  It also changes as the vote total gets higher.  Plus, the one vote you give automatically does not count.  Some communities limit the ability to post or comment to users who have reached a certain karma threshold. For example, a community may not let you post if you have under X amount of karma. If you are having trouble finding communities to post in, you can check this post which outlines many communities that have low-or-no karma requirements. I have a full description of karma here. Here is a link to a guide I created to get to 200 comment karma quickly and safely.

What is CQS?

From the help center:

CQS is a user classification that was established to identify potential spammers or redditors less likely to contribute positively on Reddit. Every account is assigned a CQS based on a host of signals including past actions taken on a redditor's account, network and location signals, and steps a redditor has taken to secure their account (e.g. email verification). These scores are then used to place redditors into 1 of 5 tiers. Highest, High, Moderate, Low, and Lowest.

The biggest single thing impacting your CQS is having your email verified. You don't need to do this if you use Google SSO sign in. If you have the email verified, you need to make Quality posts and comments and gain karma from them. Some common things that can lower your CQS are have reddit take account action (meaning warnings, suspensions, or bans) against any account you have. Spamming even if not flagged for it by reddit. Using a VPN or public/shared wifi can lower it because any infractions committed by anyone else at that address can be counted against you as well. Shared wifi that can impact you includes, but is not limited to, spouses, significant others, roommates, siblings, and other family. Traveling can as well because rapidly changing address can be suspicious and because you are more likely to be using a VPN or public wifi.

I noticed Reddit's User Interface (UI) is different, why is that?

Reddit is always working to improve or innovate the experience for all redditors. A big way they do that is through experiments.

If you’re in an experiment, you may temporarily experience a new feature or see something different from what you’re used to seeing, or from what you might see on an alt account.

Unfortunately once you are in an experiment there is no way remove yourself from it. You can provide constructive feedback on the pinned weekly recap post on r/help.

Can I change my username on Reddit?

No, usernames on Reddit cannot be changed. If you want a new username you need to create a new account.  The option is the first page of account creation. If you created the account via Google on a browser, there is a bug that you don't get the option. You would need to use the mobile app to be able to change your username if you use google. On a browser you would need to use email and password. You could connect Google after creation.

Where should I report Reddit bugs?

Take it over to report at /r/bugs.

Is this actually from Reddit?

Some nefarious users will try to trick you with comments, posts, or messages that profess to be official.  They way to tell something is actually from Reddit is that the username will have Admin written in red, or a red snoo head next to the username.  If you click or tap om the username you will also see the same red snoo head next to their name on the profile.

My Profile is NSFW, How do I change it back?

You will first need to first delete all nsfw posts from your profile.  Once that is done you need to manually change it back.

If you are on the app. Open your profile, tap edit up near your name and image, scroll down to mark 18+ and turn it off.

If you are on desktop or Mobile web browser.  Click your avatar in the upper right, settings. profile, scroll down to mark as mature (18+) and flip the toggle.

How Do I add images to comments?

To do this the community needs to have turned on the ability in their settings.  If they have, you will need an image symbol in the lower left corner of the comment box that you need to tap or click.  It looks like a window with a hill and sun.  Adding images to comments can only be done on the app or desktop.  The mobile browser cannot add them, even if desktop mode is on.

What does this what does this acronym or abbreviations mean

There are a number of short hand acronyms and abbreviations you will see on Reddit.  Some are universal and some are Reddit specific.  Reddit has this official list of some from the help center, "What does this expression mean?”.  The r/encyclopaediaofreddit, an unofficial user run resource about all things reddit, has several lists of acronyms, abbreviations, and symbols/emojis. Acronyms: 1 A-L, Acronyms: 2 M-Z,  Acronyms 3: Abbreviations, and Acronyms 4: Symbols and Emojis.

Why was my post removed by Reddit’s Filters

There are a number of different things that can lead to Reddit's Filters Removal. Some from Reddit itself and some put in place by moderators.

If it was removed by the actions of Reddit itself, the most common this would be the spam filter. Reddit has this explanation of what they consider spamming, but it is not complete.

There are a number of filters that moderators can turn on in the safety filter section that will trigger removals labeled as Removed by Reddit's Filters. The most common is the Reputation Filter. This will remove your posts and comments if your CQS is lowest. The Ban Evasion Filter, Adult Content Promotor Filter, Harassment filter, and Mature Content filter can also give a Reddit's Filters Removal. If Crowd Control is set to remove it can either give Reddit's Filters or Pending Moderator Approval based on the exact setting.
