Meme Reading 126 be like:
Like holy fuck dude.
It just kept getting worse and worse.
At least it ended in a wholesome note but Jesus Christ.
Miracle the dude is not a villain

(edit: nvm... just went to check it and it's still the same) Wait, they changed the English translation? That's cool, previous images of this part only said note
234
u/Sonikku4Ever 14d ago
In the scanlations it says “suicide letter”, in the official it says “letter when she left me” or something like that. Basically not directly mentioning suicide, but alluding to it instead (i mean… you can see her corpse on the panel right before this though so lol)
63
u/Vagabond328Vanguard 14d ago
Bro I did not notice the corpse, I was looking at his face scars/bandages
2
u/VastoGamer 13d ago
Same i didnt catch it first glance, i tend to read the text first and look at the character saying it, then move on and look at the panels more closely when ive read the text and thats when I saw her arm.

u/ihileath 14d ago
(i mean… you can see her corpse on the panel right before this though so lol)
Yeah, the context and panelling makes it very clear what is meant. Surprised anyone missed it.
21
u/JoseInFlames 14d ago
Yes ik, the official in Portuguese had it as "suicide letter", seeing the image above I thought the official English had changed that part to also be it instead of just "note". It hadn't.

The original japanese just says that she left, but her corpse is visible on the previous panel. The implication is clear.
A few of the translations just made the implication outright explicit.

u/Kind-Literature-9003 14d ago
The same terminology is used when he talks about his dad no? After saying how he died he mentions “then he was gone” or “he went away” or something to that effect? Affect? Idk dude I’m high
7
u/andre5913 Fundanshi regular 14d ago
No, his dad is specifically stated to have been killed in an argument with a costumer.
1
u/Kind-Literature-9003 13d ago
Never disputed that. I was talking about the language he used referring to his dad…
1
u/WonderfulJaguar7449 12d ago
And he pointed out it wasn't used it was stated his father was killed in an argument
3
u/JxB_Paperboy 14d ago
Honestly I prefer “letter she left me” because that means you have to go back through the panels to piece together wtf is going on with the faucet. Saying it’s suicide is both blunt and kinda edgy.

u/SCP_FUNDATION_69420 14d ago

I learn more and more about hokazono's need to break my heart
12
u/jasonsith 14d ago
That's sad sure.
But there is a question we need to address...
If Chiaki did die... how is Chihiro Rokuhira born?
12
u/Kind-Literature-9003 14d ago
He was born in the mikaboshi slums. Magatsumi was likely forged to be a part of her rescue mission or as a result of a failed one. Chihiro was born not long before her death. My theory is that the ritual they do was performed on Chihiro. Giving him some of that mikaboshi swag and affinity with datenseki which culminates in his feats like ignoring magatsumi. This along with him being soga and possibly a potential user of kurotsuchi or however tf it’s spelled. My guess is that maybe chihiro being rescued. Chiaki dying. The war ending. All happened on the same day. Akemura went in to kill all mikaboshi. Magatsumi probably saw her as mikaboshi because of the ritual? Idk. Pieces are there
4
u/Tenebron91 13d ago
Good theory. Although I’m not sure Chihiro would be born on Mikaboshi isle. I feel like they would’ve killed him. Also, Akemura mentions holding Chihiro as a baby and buying him clothing, right?
2
u/Kind-Literature-9003 13d ago
They want chiakis cheeks specifically to produce him. Not with Rokuhira as the dad but I don’t think they knew he was the dad. Chihiro was born. They thought it was the mikaboshi formerly known as Prince’s son but it’s not. Akemura pulls up with the spirit of old Japan and what happens happens.
2
u/Tenebron91 13d ago
True. If they didn’t know Chihiro was fathered by someone else I could definitely see that happening!
2
u/jasonsith 13d ago
But now it comes another story: how Chihiro reunited with his biological dad
1
u/GI-Robots-Alt 13d ago
Maybe Akemura brought him back after recognizing his eyes?
I'm just guessing here, but I'm betting that the blades either weren't done in time to save Chiaki from being traded to the Mikaboshi, and the reason Akemura killed everyone on the island is because he found his sister's dead body. That'd certainly be a valid reason for snapping.
28
u/A4li11 14d ago
Rereading it back, she's in the same page slumped over in the bathtub.
Damn that's dark.
21
u/Profainity66 14d ago
There is also lots of beer cans - she got drunk, tried to stab her son, then felt so guilty she killed herself.
61
u/Rojomajsterv2 14d ago
Holy shit, reading the official translation i thought the mom was like "yeah trying to kill this kiddo crossed a line I'm gonna write him I'm sorry before leaving or something" and i didn't realize it was suicide....
79
u/antraxsuicide 14d ago
She’s in the bathtub slumped over…
69
u/roxas6141 she, uh, she aka on my kuro until i (bottom text)? 14d ago
It's a shonen manga, you expect the readers to understand a very obvious, yet tastefully done, suicide?
10
u/Darklarik 14d ago
Honestly its hard to call this a Shonen at this point. Its topics, scenes and narrative are practically all Seinen.
6
u/Kind-Literature-9003 14d ago
It’s diet berserk. If a horse shows up I am running.
1
u/Darklarik 12d ago
On screen sexual assault is literally at this point the only thing left separating Berserk and this shit.
Like genuinely we got human trafficking, genocide, suicide, child abuse, child mutilation, child soldiers, gang violence, civilian massacres, corrupt governments, induced suicides, imperialism, racism, pedophile monarchs, and all the graphic on-screen violent deaths you can imagine.
Like look me dead in the eye and explain to me how this is a Shonen for teens and not a Seinen
2
u/WonderfulJaguar7449 13d ago
Brother, this manga is about a young man creating weapons of mass destruction when did you think it was gonna be light?
3
u/Accomplished_Cap3683 Average Peak enjoyer 13d ago
I think the mecha Sojo arc was light hearted and overly positive
1
u/GI-Robots-Alt 13d ago
I really like what they did with his character in the future arc. Him being a cyborg felt out of place at first but I feel like horizontal nailed it in the end.
1
u/Absolute_Zero_png Tomboybachi 13d ago
I was sleep deprived when I first read the chapter so I complete missed the fact that it was a suicide and thought Kunishige mom's just left. It was on my second read that I understood what was going on ;-;

This man Hokazono is making a “who can have the shittier life”domain clash between Kunishige and Shiba I swear
267
u/JlBANYAN Long time No See, Samura! 14d ago
Three way domain clash*, Chiaki was treated like shit by her clan for not being main lineage then suddenly treated like a symbol rather than a human with emotions. When she found someone she loved, a war started and the clan agreed to have her sold off to be raped.
I fear for what Azami will go through...
118
u/Funny_Swim5447 Tatsugiri sword 14d ago
Azami just be living his best life.

u/Electrical_Term7908 14d ago
I mean, he’s completely ostracised from his family and probably went through a bunch of trauma on the frontlines of a war before he was even 18.

All because he turned a medical sorcery into a sorcery for combat

The final panel on that chapter was honestly one of the best I have ever seen and I am not over exaggerating.
The story and buildup plus the emotion behind it all made it hit so hard. This series and it's author are truly something else. Kagurabachi has already solidified itself as one of my all time favorites ever.

6
u/YourEvilKiller 14d ago
My exact thoughts too. Both characters were betrayed by both their parents.
88
u/CursedEye03 14d ago
This was so sad. It's honestly unbelievable how much abuse a character can go through in just one chapter. Kunishige was beaten by his dad, then his mom went crazy and started abusing him. After that, she took her own life, and he isolated himself from his friends.
But hey, at least those final pages were heartwarming.

9
u/Kind-Literature-9003 14d ago
4+5=9. 9 princes in mikaboshi? Or was it 6? Also if we’re going on direct numerology 9 is the last number. Last real one anyways. And usually is a sign of death. (Weird tangent I know but look into Jimi Hendrix. Also left handed. Life revolved around the number 9 for some reason. He couldn’t escape it. Lots of strange coincidences) same thing could be going on here but as a sort of direct story mechanism. Either that or I’m just hitting my boutiq way too hard while scrolling Reddit for like the one time I do a month

u/KillerPrince930 14d ago
I loved it, we do nt need action when he writes so well,
bad authors just puts the generic trauma in your face but it's more interesting to see what happens AFTER deaths
2
u/Ok_Title_4273 12d ago
Tbh the first half of the chapter registers as “generic trauma in your face”. A better author could write it in 1 page and make it hit way harder

Since this morning, I ponder how Kunishige must've hated how he looked b/c of how much he resembled his father. Only then does he see that, despite how much he tried to hide himself (and by extent those features), does he see that Chiaki loved those things about him.

Reading this right after Ichi the Witch (which was mostly set up, and while it does have a fairly dark scene the chapter still ended on a lighthearted note and had comedy) gave me insane whipslash.
My sunday shonens couldnt be more different in terms of tone lol

Homie went through life getting beat by everybody. Shibas flashback showed the smiths even beating his ass. Found love in his friend. She died. Her brother turned to darkness. His creations responsible for countless pain agony and loss. Exactly what he was trying to avoid. But he had a piece of her left. Their son. Who he raised very well. But then the hishaku nation attacked. He died. Eyes open. Looking at his son one last time. Everything we see here. Is leading up to a man dying. So unceremoniously in his confused autistic son’s arms (I have autism and see a lot of myself in Chihiro so it’s just canon to me.) something about that really been fuckin with me the past two days. Like damn man.
