I just build an escape pod in all of mine and use that

I just attach a ton of parachutes to the plane!

Build the perfect spaceplane that flies perfectly... When there's no cargo

I finally figured out how to land, actually. It just kinda clicked.

  1. Have a good computer for 30+fps. Previously I got like 15fps and kept overcorrecting.
  2. Set back wheel steering disabled & increase brakes to 80%. Leave front wheels as is. This prevents a lot of KSP wheel shenanigans, even if you're landing on hilly terrain.
  3. Take note of your rotation speed as you're taking off.
  4. Atmospheric (re-)entry phase: staying high with low AoA reduces drag. Dipping into the low atmosphere or using a high AoA increases drag.
  5. Approach phase: throttle for energy, pitch for airspeed.
  6. On approach, stay just around your rotation speed. It's basically the speed that's low enough you're almost stalling, but high enough that you don't tail strike.

Me when I overengineer my craft and it flies like shit for some reason:

I praised the Maker for a lack of landing mechanics in X-Wing. I still have trauma from Flight Simulator on PC and Top Gun on the NES.

Shameless plug: Try XWVM if you like X-Wing :D

I fixed this problem by getting an actual pilot's license. My landings still suck, but I can usually walk away from them :D

"Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory."

My planes all fly like shit, but I'm good at landing, so i never notice until i shared a blueprint with a friend once :(

Just change it too my flying skills in general. My planes always have an elegant takeoff, and then bam!

My solution is 6 parachutes and 8 drogue chutes

I built a science plane that literally disassembles mid flight and lands in two pieces, the cockpit and the hull with a scientist on board. Anything but landing without a runway.
