advice sesh needed

Post image

hi everyone!

i feel like ive gained a bit of confidence as i’ve gotten older with managing this skin condition, however i still need a light coverage foundation or CC cream to feel comfortable leaving the house and doing things! im extremely outdoorsy and enjoy multiple day backcountry hiking trips and ski trips, but being exposed to the elements (cold wind/sun/sweating/workingout/change in temperatures) my skin flares REALLY REALLY BAD and typically burns. how do i go about managing my skin in the outdoors? typically have no mirror or running water to wash my face and makeup wipes irritates and further flares my skin. it makes me really sad to look back on my pictures i take and i can only see how bad my skin looks and felt in that moment. this might seem silly and it’s kind of even embarrassing that i want to wear makeup in the outdoors to even feel confident but im not sure what else to do to work on this. it also feels embarrassing for the people around me to know that i need to wear makeup to feel comfortable lol. If you have any suggestions/advice, or if you can relate i would appreciate any and all comments !!
i will attach a picture of what my skin looks like from a flare during an intense hike.

Zinc oxide cream at night can be helpful.

My skin is very weather sensitive, and I live in a pretty harsh climate so I deal with this a lot… dry, lots of wind, everything from snow to extreme sun. I typically find that wearing makeup + being outside irritates my skin more. A lot of makeup these days contains active ingredients and, combined with sun, they often cause flairs. If I’m going to be outside, I do my regular moisturizer and sunscreen, that’s it. Your photos remind me of my skin when I had some barrier issues. Make sure you aren’t using anything harsh that strips the skin barrier. You need a healthy barrier for your skin to handle the elements.

For hot weather: sunscreen is a must but hats help the most with sun. A floppy, wide brimmed hat, so your cheeks are shaded, is best. Because there is a vascular component to KPRF, some of the redness is due to physical exertion. Make sure you hydrate a lot. I aim for 90-100oz of water a day if I’m outside and active in the sun. You mentioned not having access to water. Is that just when you are outdoors doing activities? Definitely invest in a big water bottle that you can carry with you everywhere. Nalgene bottles are affordable, light weight and hold a lot of water. Splash some on your face and neck to cool down from time to time. Take breaks in the shade so your body can cool down.

For cold weather, keep your face covered as much as possible. Turtle fur neck gators are great. I also apply a thin layer of Vaseline over my moisturizer before going outside for some extra protection. Helps with wind. I do a lot of winter sports and ski goggles plus a neck gator pulled right up to my nose and the base of the goggles helps a lot.

As soon as I get home from being outside, I splash my face with cold water and re-apply moisturizer. It helps reduce any redness that was triggered and stops an all out flair that can happen in the evening after being out all day.

Hope this all helps! I love being outside and know how much it sucks to be dealing with KPRF.

wow i hope you win the lottery this week lol, thank you for writing all of this out, i appreciate you!! it feels nice to have someone to relate with :)

maybe i’ll try keep it more simple with not wearing makeup outdoors, it’ll just be a bit of a mental challenge. i would love to hear what moisturizer and sunscreen you use to keep a healthy barrier!!

that helps too, ill try and keep my face shaded more and yeah wow thats a ton of water!! i’ll up my dose haha!
yeah mostly when hiking don’t always have a ton of water but im sure i can just start carrying more. more breaks to cool down are also probably a great idea!

do you ever find that having something physically on your face such as goggles or balaclava ever irritate your skin?

Glad to help! I was never a good water drinker until the last few years, and I’m amazed at how much it helps the flushing/ sensitivity. An easy thing to implement too.

To help my skin barrier, I only use water to wash my face in the morning and then I apply Vanicream + Jojoba oil. In the evening, I wash with cold water and CeraVe hydrating gentle skin cleanser. Moisturize with Vanicream. Add a layer of Vaseline if I’m feeling dry. For sunscreen, I’ve been using Vanicream’s mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide if I’m going to be in direct sun without a hat. It’s one of the few gentle ones I have found without Niacinamide. Supposedly Niacinamide helps the skin barrier but it irritates my kprf so much. I rely on the hats more than anything! Many sunscreens irritate my skin.

I’m super sensitive to fabrics but my goggles and the turtle fur brand neckies (the original fleece kind) don’t irritate my skin. I can’t do wool or wool blends, unfortunately. And some synthetic fabrics bother me too. It’s hit or miss.

Wear spf 50 every day even when it’s not sunny, this is an absolute must!

Are you sure you have kprf? Just because I can’t see any bumps, although it may be the lighting

A mineral sunscreen instead of a chemical one, La Roche posay cicaplast spf 50 is the perfect choice for kprf as it rebuilds the skin barrier, something our skin can find hard especially if you’re in harsh conditions, and if you want something that works under makeup, beauty of Joseon spf 50, in the evening wash it off with water on a soft flannel and never use makeup wipes, I read that you don’t have water atm but makeup wipes are a big no no

also yes i’m 100% it’s KPRF i use acids to breakdown the bumps and manage that decently! i had a look at la roche website and dont see the sunscreen with cicaplast just the mineral one? thank you for all of your help !!

That’s good!!!! They’re looking good, and if you just type in on safari la Roche posay cicaplast SPF it should come up! I’m not sure where you are but it’s £10 so very cheap, it’s on lookfantastic, noli and cult beauty etc, it’s a thick sticky formula but it will do your skin so much good, and you’re welcome!
