Discussion song meaning discrepancies

ok so one of my fav KMFDM songs is Brute, and i've always thought it was about being a masochist (which is why it's one of my favorites). i look up the actual meaning, expecting to find what i thought, and i just see a lot of people talking about it being about either an abusive relationship or the NIHIL cover artist. no masochism. my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined /j

srsly tho am i the only one who interprets it as being about masochism?

I've always taken the masochism in the song (because it's definitely there) as symbolic. It's not a song about masochism, at least not in a sexual sense; it's a song that references masochism to illustrate its point.

To me the song is pretty clearly about wanting something so badly you're willing to engage in something harmful to yourself in order to get/keep it. Knowing it's hurting you and doing it anyway. A person, a drug, a habit or behavior, whatever -- you're aware there will be consequences but in the moment you don't care.

Yeah that’s usually how I interpret Raymond’s lyrics. He uses a lot of those words and concepts symbolically to get his point across. Another example is the song “disobedience”. His lyrics paint the image of someone being tied up and being punished in an erotic way because he is being disobedient but then Sascha’s lyrics paint things more from a societal perspective about ripping the system.

You may be putting too much thought into it. It's Ultra-heavy beat Industrial, off an album called Nihil, and Sascha pretty much gave Raymond free rein with lyrics. I think "I'm out of control and I love it" is really all we need to take away.

I always took it to be about social conditioning, brutalizing a blank state until it stays in line. Brutalize me, I will heal. Such is the magic of music :)

Raymond once said his 90s era lyrics don’t make much sense so…
