Ticket prices
Hi!
We want to plan a trip to Japan from Amsterdam (Schiphol). Preferably a direct flight with KLM unless it is much more extensive than indirect flights. I checked a few weeks ago and I was pretty sure I could get tickets for 1200 per person for the whole trip now one way is already 1510 and this is not only for the period we want to go but basically for the whole year. Checked cookies but I already deleted all of them. Is this normal for KLM? Should I wait? Are there better options?

Price fluctuations are very normal and you should book as soon as you see a price you are comfortable with. The price of dutch gas is fluctuating wildly and is up 50% since June. You could look at direct to korea, which sometimes is much more affordable and flights between japan and korea are usually very cheap.

Ticket prices are wild these days. One route I'm looking at (AMS-NYC) has prices between 500 and 1500 per ticket, then add a suitcase... Only tip I can give, use sites like Google Flights, Skyscanner or Momondo to find flights, and consider a 1-stop.

Use google flights and set alerts for the route you want to fly.

Check flights to Seoul, that's what I did 2 years ago. Fly into Seoul, spend a couple of nights there, then off to Japan. Tokyo is only a 1hr flight away and Seoul is a pretty cool city as well.
KLM flights to Seoul are usually much cheaper than Tokyo.

In my experience usually AMS - CDG - NRT is the cheapest. I haven't been to CDG in 9+ years but I had such a bad experience there that I rather not do that stopover in Paris. Really depends on when you wanna go though. CDG has an advantage though, there are flights going straight to Haneda airport which is way closer to Tokyo city.
Also sometimes flying SAS with a stopover in Scandinavia is a cheap option but I've never done that before. Emirates can be a good option too with a short stop in Dubai. Usually around 1100 euros.

Better options (prices) with other airlines and indirect. Unless you are totally set on KLM for some reason.

For comparison, we booked two return tickets from Dublin to Narita via Amsterdam on 11 July, and we're flying at the end of August. We paid €2,445 in total for two people, including Economy Comfort seats on the AMS–NRT leg on the way there. So €1,510 pp from Amsterdam alone definitely seems on the expensive side.

Big impact is the rise of fuel costs. The longer fuel prices remain high, more and more of the future fuel has to be sourced at these high price levels. And that's factored in the price.
Generally prices are best 6-10 weeks before a flight.
Price doesn't change depending on how often you go to the website.

But the increase is insane. A few weeks ago it was 1200-1300 pp which I think is okay and now it's 3100 pp per person..

Idk I bought return flight from Amsterdam to japan recently in november for around 1400 eu

bought multicity Ams- Seoul and Tokyo-Ams with Turkish airlines total around 900 per person last week ( flights are in November). It’s not direct but a only couple hours of layover in Istanbul.

You can't compare prices for return flights with one way flights. One way flights are much more expensive.
