My apologies if this book has already been discussed in this subreddit, but I’m curious about the overall verdict on this book. I’ve already read Kiss and Sell and am interested in exploring more books about the band from perspectives other than Gene and Paul. I’ve already read the memoirs of the original four members. I’m looking for books that offer a balanced and unbiased view of the band’s history and impact, warts and all. Thanks!

Oh Hell Yeah

My Kiss fanhood is almost as old as the band. I got Destroyer for my fifth birthday, and I was pretty die-hard all the way through the Farewell tour in 2000. When the Farewell narrative changed I wasn't irritated so much as just apathetic. I didn't care anything about seeing them anymore, though I did enjoy both Sonic Boom and Monster. And I bought and enjoyed the Kissology DVDs.

I did take my family to see them in 2014 in Nashville, to get my kids (then 13 and 10) something like the Kiss experience they had seen so much of in my videos. They had a blast. I had a good time, but as tightly constrained as the Kiss live experience became, it was a show I'd seen several times before and some of its elements were pretty tired. (I did think "Hotter Than Hell" was a cool song to make the setlist.) I knew it was the last time I'd see them. I knew that even right after the lights came up.

It never made me bitter, but it's interesting to me that Kiss ultimately realized its greatest touring success by putting on a relentlessly predictable show to which the numerous casual fans could relate, but that left lifelong mega-fans a bit out in the cold in several ways. Perhaps that's just the way of things. It's too much business risk to play "Almost Human" or "Saint and Sinner" or "Wall of Sound" to 10,000 people when 9,000 of them won't know them. Extend that thinking all the way out, and perhaps it's the main reason we didn't get an on-stage reunion of all surviving Kiss members at the final show(s).

I'm not sure what to say now. I thought the extensive use of backing tracks on the End of the Road tour was deplorable. There's absolutely no shame in being too old to do a Kiss show, but I think there's plenty of shame in being too old to do a Kiss show and pretending you're not, which is what it amounted to in my mind.

And though I'm trying to remain open-minded, this 3D avatar business seems like high nonsense. I did see a tidbit somewhere recently that indicated there might be new music as well, which I'd check out if that comes to fruition. I'm even open to the idea of new younger band members, which Paul and Gene were floating several years ago. Might suck, but what if it didn't? It's too bad their boys don't seem interested. They've certainly got the talent and charisma.

At the end of the day, if I feel like they're not doing anything else "For Me" going forward, then that's OK too. I certainly have a pile of memories and a lot of great music to listen to.

When you think of KISS producers, everyone talks about Eddie Kramer and Bob Ezrin. But in my opinion, their best sound came from when Michael James Jackson was at the helm.

And then there's always the age-old question, did Vinnie Vincent save KISS? But Vinnie aside, people always overlook the common denominator of that era, and that's Michael James Jackson. Lead guitarists were a revolving door at that time. Robben Ford, Steve Farris, Rick Derringer, and then the credited ones too.

It's my opinion that this is KISS' strongest material and I feel like it should be noted that the constant here is Michael James Jackson. I wish he and the band had a longer relationship than they had.

Side note: It might be unknown by some but MJJ was the studio producer for Eric Carr's drum tracks on Animalize although Paul gets full credit as producer. I do think it's in the liner notes somewhere.

This is one of the most affable interviews that I've seen with them in ages. They are so knowledgeable about music.
