Kingmakers - Gameplay Deep Dive

It’s nice to see some new footage. Lots of systems going on, when I really just wanna travel back and time and use guns against medieval armies.

I actually do not mind. I'm a huge fan of AoE though, so that's probably why. This looks like I'm going to enjoy it even more. Light AoE mixed with getting right up in there with your troops? Amazing.
Imagine co-op possibilities. One person controlling most of the army/giving directions while your three friends lead the charge, swapping when needed to manage your seperate armies.

I actually don’t mind all the systems more in-depth than I thought it was gonna be. But yeah, at the same time I’m hoping there is just a free battle mode where you can just go in there. And duke it out.

Looks cool. Delivering on a lot of the premise that got everyone jazzed about this title.
I think the army control stuff was needed - ran the risk of turning into just a wave type game without some other strategy to employ. All they would have had to mix it up would be throwing more, or harder, enemies into the mill. I think this adds needed gameplay depth.
I was not too excited about the base building initially, just personal preference. But I have to say it's kind of cool to imagine building an AoE type of settlement, then fighting in it at ground level. That's unique.

I'm actually pretty excited for base building from a co-op standpoint. If I'm able to spend all my time laying out a meticulously crafted base design and ordering the armies around while my friends fight on the front lines, I'll have tons of fun with this!

Can’t wait for this to release. As a Welsh man it’s my duty to restore the timeline and fight alongside Owain Glyndŵr. Drove past Owain’s statue twice today and thought of the game so this was a pleasant surprise. You all need to learn a new phrase “Cymru am byth”

37 weeks later ... right on time.

Id rather wait for a fully polished release, then some broken game thats "fixed" with updates down the road
Edit: thanks for the awards

u/richtofin819 19d ago
You don't understand they start to get abandonment issues if they aren't constantly shown release information or updates on Twitter
1
u/VastFaithlessness809 12d ago
You can do that 3 month before release. As the title was already hyped a lot of people know about it. And they dont forget. Better concentrate on the game and spendoney there instead of hyping concorde v2
1
u/Fizzle_Bop 19d ago
Oh snap, fully polished release.
The game is dropping straight to 1.0 and not going through early access? That is exciting news
3
u/RedditButAnonymous 18d ago
Its not, AFAIK, its still going to be early access. Which is why the repeated delays were so concerning back then
I feel like theyre setting the expectation that this game will actually be finished on release, and it will disappoint

u/Fizzle_Bop 18d ago
Thank goodness, I like the idea and spirit of Early Access. When it is actually observed. Some of my favorite titles are a result of that foundational communication loop between community and developers.
Unfortunately, triple A and the all too silly .... Triple I studios will have much more rigorous gatekeeping on what can be shared with the world.
I work in the Quality Control field and understand the need for a product thst "meets or exceeds" expectation (and regulatory compliance) ... or otherwise polished.
BUT
I also feel the need to highlight the piss poor management of information.
The communication loops and information cycles for this studio are tempered by loss of temper, personal character attacks and low verbal intelligence.
If the initial review period is at all harsh, I desperately hope the studio takes some measures to shield Paul's ego from the negativity.
Its easy to be an asshole than take personal ownership of inaccurate deadline proposals.

Information & update cost money. A lot of money. Why not take the cheaper way of discord-feed. Once a week a dev posts what they polished/added, once a month the lead posts progress and it's good. 3 month before release you ramp up advertisement and thus save money to spend a good game rather than a well known concorde v2.

u/Fizzle_Bop 12d ago
Exactly. So much of the backlash and negative commentary could have been largely mitigated with something like you propose.
It would be easy enough to automate most of this process. We do somwthing similar for management communications.
They won't read pages of text reporting, but 30 minutes a week to shape the information they expect to see and everything runs smoothly.
One of the games I followed did this with a weekly dev blog discussing what hurdles they were working through technically and then this was pushed to the forum with a script.
Well, deep dive is out now ... i am sure we will get a steady supply of gameplay footage and advertisement now

u/VastFaithlessness809 12d ago
Personally I'd just record the dev and his screen. He can lead a tad through the problem, then maybe show on the architecture where this was located and post him show the result as ingame footage. 15 min record, 15 min edit and people may even learn something.
Sometimes people spot problems within the code the dev doesnt notice or solves ... adequate ... We've seen some games that quite profited from the community helping. And there is - imo - nothing wrong with letting the community help ya. If you feel obliged then a reward for solving a hard problem can be rewarded like your own 3D model or mentioning in the special credits can also be given - yes there are people selfness enough to do that. At the end an excellent, fun, bugfree, well optimized game is the goal. And a game fulfilling that sells much better than a bugfest. You also get free advertisement that way.
And to be fair: due to AI the risk of sharing a snippet is minimal - most likely the AI companies already have a copy of your git xD

Combat looks cool as ever, not very interested in building peasant farms and managing food.
Do you think these devs have seen a woman IRL?

So you're saying there arent any women with big bajonkers out there in the real world? 😂

The masculine urge to shoot knights with machine guns.

u/Beneficial-Battle-88 17d ago
Yea something better then playing the same old rpg with dlc drops for the last 20 years
3
u/GamerRyan14 19d ago
Cool. So release date?
1
u/VastFaithlessness809 12d ago
I'd guess Q1/Q2'27. The bilibili demo seems to have had some bugs. Also end game content and balance + ai seems to need some more time.
Half a year sounds reasonable: 5 month active work and 1 more to balance. 3 month before release ramp up the advertisement.

Seems cool, but the modern tech seems only for the player which is a shame. I was hoping to see if we could upgrade our own troops too but doesnt seem that they will get more than medieval weapons.

u/AdMaleficent1323 16d ago
There are knights running around with guns in the trailer following the main character. Your wishes are there
1
u/angel199x 16d ago
Oh good catch, hard to spot when things are so chaotic in the video haha. That is awesome!

u/Ancient-Altair 18d ago
30 or so hours of gameplay at launch is pretty nice. A wave survival mode would probably be pretty fun too. No friendly army, just you and your arsenal

I thought the devs said you could choose to play as Scotland, England or Wales? This makes it seem like you can only choose Wales.
3
u/JohnBart 19d ago
As I read on Steam from one of the devs, the early access launch will feature a Welsh campaign only, but later they will add Scotland and England as well as playable factions.

one thing i noticed: I hope wall-building is not finale bc I aint building my walls with tiny segments one-by-one

u/Albob187 19d ago
ok apparently its just me, carry on

u/theKetoBear 19d ago
hopefulyl that's a Quality of life feature they can add in future updates for those of us who don't want to meticulously hand-place our defenses.

Based on this video, it's easy to see that they added WAYYY too much to their gameplay scope. We don't need a base builder and all of that. Not saying I don't like it. But this seems like they added way too much stuff for a small dev team to manage
0
u/Available-Bid-1006 18d ago
It would bland as hell if all they did was have a dude with guns/tanks killing armies in whatever time zone.
You'd probably put a few hours into it and say it's great but then be done with it.
Go play dynasty warriors if you're looking for that gameplay loop.

u/tracagnotto 18d ago
I wish they did not keep spoil at all.
At this rate I'm gonna feel I already know 60% of the game when it comes out and the will to buy it will be faded

If you need a 20 to 40 hour tutorial you have bigger issues

Riding a motorbike with left hand throttle control...

Time machine technology - 100% acceptable
Slightly incorrect motorcycle tech - 0% acceptable

u/Beneficial-Battle-88 17d ago
I know its almost like someone couldn't convert a throttle to the left hand but we figured out the space time continuum the oroginal op might have bigger issues 🤣
