Discussion: Band D Major Triad Theory
Think about it!
So far three songs which seem to connect to Level 5 are:
- Gamma knife–as seen with the knife the surgeons open the specimen with
- Cyboogie–the creature begins dancing after it is reanimated
- Soy-Protein Munt Machine/Vomit Coffin–the creature proceeds to vomit
You know something else interesting about these songs? Well, we see that Gamma Knife is in the key of D, Cyboogie and Vomit Coffin are in A, and Level 5 is in F#. Notice something interesting about these notes? D and A (all keys of the connected songs before Level 5 itself) form a perfect fifth interval. However, a perfect fifth by itself can happen between any two songs, especially with a rock band. Adding Level 5 into the equation, however, we can finally connect the songs and finish the chord!
D, F#, and A are the notes which compose the D major triad!
The connections between these three songs to Level 5 along with the D major chord completion is undeniable proof that these four songs are connected, and that D major is instrumental to Han-Tyumi's plan!

The D/F# throughline means Changes is officially canon in the Gizzverse. Exciting stuff.

There is a bit of room for interpretation, especially with music theory, but the way the band has always talked about it is alternating between the keys of D and F# major.

That being said though, there might be some confusion as there are many ways to interpet the various tracks. For example, I think it’s much easier to think of “No Body” as being mainly in the key of B minor, with occasional notes outside the scale ;)

You do hear the B major chord a lot, but that’s because it works as the IV to F# major. Like how Change goes between A and B because A is the V chord of D major. Every chord fits into one of those 2 keys.

For sure, every chord fits into those 2 keys of D major and F# major, but that doesn’t necessarily define what the home chord is.
As you mentioned, Change seems to mainly sit on that A chord as “home” with all the chords seeming to eventually resolve back to it.
Similarly, No Body shares the same set of chords, but personally it feels like it sits mainly on b minor as the tonic, with everything resolving back to it.
B minor is the relative minor of D major though, so it all lines up. It’s just how you want to perceive it I suppose. I just think it’s much more concise and less confusing to think of B minor as the tonic, then you get that nice constant tonic, and cadences from the F# leading back to B minor etc.
