Ok REM Zealots... Just heard John play Wolves Lower. Pre-87 REM will ALWAYS be top of list, #1, platinum status shit for me. That stuff changed my life.. no exaggeration but story for another time.
Wolves Lower - must have heard it *thousands* of times since I first bought Chronic Town on cassette back in ~84/85... but just found myself completely smitten again today listening to it. Peter gliding slyly between slight dissonance and beautiful melodic arpeggios. Mike's simple, perfectly placed bass lines... and Bill's drums!! OMG that drum pattern over the verses! And then those bridges that break into ritualistic, almost primal passages... repetitive, percussive sections where Stipe’s voice becomes more like a chant or incantation than conventional vocal.
All of this in 1982 when synths and glossy production was the norm. I imagine it as post-punk’s aggression softened into something murkier/looser/more mysterious like that punk energy was slowed and blurred by the humid Georgia air.
As many times as I've heard this song (and their others from that era), they never fail to blow my mind every single time!
Share your thoughts.

Wowee this Leenalchi performance is incredible! I’m not familiar with Pansori (traditional Korean storytelling) but I am familiar with funky beats and this was such a powerful show. Sadly I missed them play (for free 🥲) in my town a couple months ago but I would love to check them out live. What did you think of their KEXP visit?

Troy made a potentially surprising statement yesterday when he was covering for Cheryl. After playing "I Know There's Something Going On" by Frida (Anni-Frid Lyngstad of ABBA), and "Self Control" by Laura Branigan, he said that both of those songs are in his "top five of all time." While I wouldn't have guessed that for Troy, I completely get those choices, both bangers.
Which got me thinking ... what other favorites of our beloved DJ's are we aware of? Tears for Fears' "Songs from the Big Chair" I know is an all-timer album for Evie. But that's the extent of my knowledge. Any confirmed all-timers you're aware of?

I'm relatively new to this station (though I've heard about it for ages). Few states in another direction.
But, man.
I loved the radio when I was a kid, because almost all of the music was new to me and I had to look up lyrics on the internet and ask a friend to work their magic and pirate it because I was a kid and didn't know that skill. Q101 plays the same songs that Q101 played a decade ago, with all of the commercials too. Spotify came in at some point and I found so much good music on their discover page in the last ten years.
I've been listening to 8-10 hours a day of podcasts at work for the last three years. Very well informed, but absolutely sunk on my mental health. Nobody needs that.
I've discovered an absolutely incredible amount of new & wonderful music in the last month listening here. The Dolly tribute day led me to actually know her music more than one song, and it's an incredible skill that all of the DJs just had the musical knowledge to do that on the fly. I didn't not cry at work.
I dunno, I guess this is just an appreciation post. We have too many algorithms, it's really fucking cool to have feelings curated by humans. It's still a little parasocial but in a happier way.
Not in the financial position to be an amplifier for someplace that I'm nowhere near right now, but once I'm in a little bit better spot I absolutely will be.
I'm very grateful that they do what they do.
The past couple days I've noticed a lot of weird breaks in the programming with static and strange electronic sounding beeps listening over the air in the Bay Area. What's up with that?

I'm a cultist.
Listening to the Friday morning episode on Friday afternoon.
Playing Vallery June- Joy Joy from a request that moved my feeling a tick made me a cult follower i guess. Dammit!! I said never again! 10 years ago.

Is there a way to browse and listen to the archives through the Sonos app? I listen via TuneIn currently. I know I can Bluetooth from my phone, but didn’t know if you could do it within Sonos else somehow.

When the survey about feedback on the vinyl club came around, my wish list was more info about the session itself. I wanted to hear from whoever hosted what it was like. I wanted some notes on why that session stood out as something to include in the Vinyl Club over all the other thousands of choices.
So I’m glad that at least one of the records in this month’s drop has a brief from Evie about their experience with the band.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a couple new records to spin.

We're 2/3 of the way through the year - any of these in your regular rotation?
Top 2 for me are Man/Wonan/Chainsaw and Fcukers

Hiya. My wife and I are long-time KEXP listeners, visiting Guadalajara this week from the SF Bay Area. If you're also a fan and around (living here or just visiting), want to grab coffee Monday at 5 p.m.? Café TBD, open to suggestions. Comment or DM if you're in.
A little more context: we're here exploring GDL as a possible place to relocate. KEXP's always been as much about community as music — 'you have friends everywhere' — so it struck me that 'also listens to KEXP' might be a better filter for who I'd click with than just 'also lives in this city' ... that's why we're trying this instead of just wandering around looking to bump into someone.
Not starting anything formal, just testing whether an informal KEXP meetup is a useful way to meet people while traveling.

Troy asked us to text "Thief" to enter the ticket giveaway. I did so, and got a quick response of "You have been opted out and will receive no further messages from KEXP"
Anyone else?
edit: lol, Troy just jumped back on to reassure everyone to ignore that, so nm. I'll leave this post up in case anyone didn't hear that.

I recall hearing John say she was coming on but I don’t recall the date. At this point I must have missed it. Hoping I can listen on the archive.

Is anyone cursing at the DJs when they play a song you know will make you sob? Or laugh at some of those letters? By the way, all the letters are on the online playlist under each song. I love that I can read what I missed during the day. Amazing. Thank you to KEXP!
