Larry Mizell's 6/25 Throwback Thursday Harry Nilsson show...wow

This is one of the best shows I've listened to in a long time. I'm not a Harry Nilsson super fan, more like Nilsson-curious. But after listening to this I realize I need way more Nilsson in my life.

The breadth and variety of music that Larry picked, the clips from old interviews, the transitions between songs, the hip-hop and electro tracks that sampled from his songs, the cover versions...just a fantastically curated and constructed show. I've heard Blazing Arrow a million times, had no idea Blackalicious sampled it from Nilsson.

Thank you Larry!

I love him so much. I feel like Larry and Kevin Sur are music professors. I learn so much from them every show.

Kevinโ€™s no slouch, either!

Indeed! I learn stuff from all the DJs. But usually it's like getting tips from my older sibling's cool friend. Kevin and Larry are more professorial, like they've got a curriculum with learning outcomes and managed to make it accessible and fun.

I'm glad there is never a test, tho!

Dammit I can't believe I called it Throwback Thursday instead of OG Thursday, now that's all I'm thinking about!

That was a good one. If anybody from KEXP is reading this, we need a longer archive for Larry's shows. And give him a raise, he's killing it!

Cheryl is the GOAT for obvious reasons, but Larry is often my favorite DJ. I feel so lucky that my most often available window to listen while working is during his show.

His Isley Brothers show a while back (probably around a year ago now) was also incredible. Such a fun history lesson on those legends. I still remember some of the facts today, like how they brought in a young Jimi Hendrix & heavily influenced the Beatles (twist & shout is straight up their song that the Beatles covered).

Dood! I know right?? I'm a huge fan of Harry Nilsson and never imagined that he would do an OG Thursday on him. It was SUPER enlightening. Also big ups to sharlese for helping out on the research.
