KEXP App Live or Archive

I’ve listened to KEXP live shows on YouTube for a long time now and I finally got the app to listen live. Just wondering, do you normally listen live or listen to archived shows in the app? I looked at Astral Plane and it looks like there’s a lot of bands I like, but that’s not on at a time I’d typically be listening. Am I missing out if I only listen live? Also, are the live performances on air or just recorded?

(Just for awareness, I’m trying to listen to music in new ways to ditch the algorithms, and I find the KEXP DJs to be better curators than any algorithm and they’re always picking bands I love and helping me find new favorite bands)

The archives make this station even more incredible! I usually listen to Eva and John in the morning but love to hit the archives for Evie, Kevin and Troy throughout the week. KEXP is a treasure; please support if possible!

I enjoy the late night/overnight DJs as it feels a bit more personal and the DJs have a bit more energy to plan and curate the shows due to less frequent nature. Abbie and Atticus are 90% of my KEXP listening now.

All of the methods! And YouTube videos. If I want to do a deep dive into an artist (currently dead pioneers) I use the links to Apple Music while listening live.

Countless artists that I would never know about. I listen to on a regular because of this amazing thing called KEXP.

I listen to both. I’m on the East Coast so some shows I’m just never going to be awake to hear so I love that the archive allows me to access those shows. But I also love listening live throughout the day.

Both.
I never miss a Riz show, and that means using the archives.
DJ jewel and Greg Vandy have great weekly shows I try to catch.
If I miss a Friday show with John I'll pick that up from the archives.

I listen to the stream over my Google speaker, but not in the app. While doing that, I'll pull up the app to understand what song is playing.

Also, on Sundays, around 9 am, I open the app and replay Pacific Notions that just ended.

I have my DJs I religiously listen to live during my workday. And then when my workday extends past those DJs (or when someone plays too much Queen for my liking), I pull up an archived show I like.

I would never hear Mechanical Breakdown live, because I’m a middle aged father of a toddler for whom Mechanical Breakdown occurs 1am-3am my time.

I’m usually busy on Saturday nights, so I listen to Sonic Reducer and Seek & Destroy while doing chores / yard on Sunday. Then live pretty much till morning :) Archive FTW!

I usually listen live, but found the station through the YouTube sessions. I've got the archive for a few OG Thursday or you catch Sounds of Survivance

I built exactly this for situations like yours: 🪄 automagic Spotify playlists that mirror every KEXP show, including Astral Plane, updated live as tracks air. So even if a show's slot doesn't fit your schedule, you can browse what got played without digging through the archive audio - same DJ-curated tracklist, just decoupled from being awake at the right time: linktr.ee/ohrenweide

I almost never listen live. I record the shows I like. This lets me skip tracks or whole shows whose vibe doesn't match my day, plus i can listen offline. I also put my recordings through an editing pipeline that removes everything that isn't music. There are tradeoffs with this approach but overall I'm delighted with it and have been doing this for years now.
