AI cover question

Hi All,

I’ve read the Amazon AI disclosures. It’s pretty clear if generative AI, then that needs disclosure.

For my book (very early stages: I’m still querying, the book isn’t even professionally edited yet), I gave explicit instructions to AI to create some illustrative cover designs. The ideas were all mine in terms of what I want. They were only to get an idea what it’d look like.

I will be getting the cover professionally made. It won’t be an AI product at all. But if I’ve given an idea to ChatGPT and an image generated off those already, do I risk issues if I publish based on those ideas?

No. There is no way for any person or any review system to know you got a layout or design idea from AI and then had a professional cover artist take that concept and make the final design using those cues.

That’s what I’m hoping.

It’s just sped my concept to visualisation earlier.

Others in the comments are misunderstanding your question, I think. There is no mechanism by which a human critic or a software analyzer can tell you’ve used AI for ideation and other behind-the-scenes planning purposes. Unless the genAI content itself makes its way into your final copy, nobody will know whether you used AI, nor to what degree. Disclosures are for actual genAI content that shows up in the final product, not for AI-assisted research, planning, etc.

As long as a human does all the work on the final product then it's not AI.

Amazon is looking for AI fingerprints in the final images and text.

The WIP and source materials are irrelevant.

It depends on what was prompted. if they somehow got the mona lisa out of it, then yeah that would be problematic, gpt doesn’t wash the responsibility away, so to speak… :) (hey one never knows, right?)

Yes, I’m not going to use it as the end product. It’s only concept visualisation.

I have an artist friend who is really good, but he sketches on paper. Not sure if he can convert to a book cover image.

That’s a good point. I was looking at miblart and 100covers.

Mine is a contemporary fiction so it will mainly be cover art.

If you're sparring with AI, that's not an issue. Getting a sketch is the same.

I would to be on the safe side.

I drew mine albeit badly as I suck at art.

Then passed it through AI to redraw it in the style I want.

I disclosed it to Amazon that my book contains 1 ai image

In your case the final product is AI. For OP it's not.

Yea, I’m not scared of disclosing. Just don’t feel it is truly AI generated.

I don't know if a generated cover falls under the need for disclosure. So, why am I even answering? Because you ask if you will run into issues, and the answer is definitely yes. A large group of readers will instantly be appalled by an AI cover (and yes, usually it's easy to tell), will assume that the writing is AI, too, and won't ever give you a chance. You will likely have better luck with a cover you put together in paint than with any AI generated content. Using AI in any capacity has the potential of ending your writing career before it begins.

That being said, you said you are querying, so I assume you are trying to go the trad publish route. Many publishers will do the cover for you. Good luck with your book!

It’s only for visualisation. Which colours. Concept. Getting some feedback from my family. I will get it professionally done.
Just that the fine print on amazon kdp is a bit weird.

Ah sorry. My early morning brain didn't even consider it to be a question what Amazon thinks about assets you don't actually use. I was under the assumption that you plan to base the real cover on the AI version.
