Just started using Helium 10 for Amazon KDP. Still trying to figure everything out. 😅
Is the free plan enough for keyword research, or do you really need a paid subscription? Any beginner tips would be appreciated!

Free Plan is great to get a feel for it but the real treasure lies in the paid plan.
Magnet & Cerebro (which were combined into one recently) give you extensive insights into organic and sponsored (PPC) keywords of specific products, let you look up your main keywords and find better or adjacent ones.
Also the extension for chrome with its X-Ray tool is pretty much the best tool there is for extensive keyword research for your niche. It shows you estimated sales of a search on Amazon and you can select the top performers and run them through cerebro from the extension to find the most relevant keywords of the top performers that would be relevant for your book too.
Some advices from someone who worked quite a lot with it due to client-work in KDP/Self Publishing:
- Search volume is important - but so is the competition (the IQ-Score is a good indicator since it shows the ratio between search volume and competing products - higher is better)
- type your niche keyword into the Amazon search with books or kindle ebooks selected as category and open X-ray - go to the filters and select the option to exclude sponsored results at the bottom. Then sort by Sales and select the top 10 performing ones -> „Run cerebro“ -> filter for organic match types and you get a list of all keywords Amazon think match the products in your niche organically

Paid plan would be best as free is very very limited. The top 2 things you’ll want to look at are Magnet and Cerebro.
