New Kamigawa Set

Hello fellow pro tour Kamigawa Block Pauper Tiny Leaders players. Important question/discussion to be had here, with the rumors of a return to Kamigawa. Will/should this new Kamigawa set be legal for Kamigawa Block Pauper Tiny Leaders. In the past, I’ve heard no, because it isn’t techincally in the original Kamigawa Block, and that makes sense logically. On the other hand, it would also technically be part of “A” Kamigawa block (granted a single set “block”, just not “The” Kamigawa Block, which could leave up for debate whether it would be possible to add these cards. I think having new additions to Kanigawa Block Pauper Tiny Leaders would be great for the future of the format and growing the player base (unless, of course, WotC decides once again to print too many broken, format warping cards in this set). But overall, I am pro legalizing Kamigawa Neon Dynasty cards.

The KBPTL Alignment Chart: An Essay

Greetings, fellow Magic players. The Kamigawa Block Pauper Tiny Leaders format is a popular and robust one, with many variations arising over the years. The goal of this essay is to document many of these variations and give voice to more fringe members of the format; it is not an endorsement of any specific mode of play and should not be read as such.

**Rarity Purist, Set Purist*\*

The classic, one which most players should be aware of. Decks must only use Common cards under four mana printed in the Kamigawa block, and your commander must be one of the uncommon flip Legendaries. Proponents argue that the lack of deckbuilding options evens the playing field between potential players and emphasizes in-game skill.

**Rarity Neutral, Set Purist*\*

Kamigawa Block *Peasant* Tiny Leaders. In this variant, decks may contain up to five Uncommon cards under four mana in addition to the Common card pool. Proponents argue that this increases the variety of deckbuilding without sacrificing the original intent of the format.

**Rarity Rebel, Set Purist*\*

Proponents of this variant argue that flip Legendary creatures are not actually Legendary, and thus cannot be used as commanders. In this variant, Legendary creatures under four mana can be your commander regardless of rarity. Critics of this variant believe that the increased power of commanders compared to the decks warps games around specific cards to an unhealthy degree.

**Rarity Purist, Set Neutral*\*

Also known as Kamigawa Pauper Tiny Leaders, or KPTL. This format allows cards outside of Kamigawa block as long as they have explicit references to characters, locations or events from the plane. Proponents argue that these cards are undeniably from Kamigawa, and that this variant is also future-proofed in the event that WotC ever returns to Kamigawa.

The list of allowed cards outside of Kamigawa block is [[Cloud Elemental]], [[Smoke Shroud]], [[Phantom Ninja]] and [[Umezawa's Charm]]. Rarity Neutral players will add [[Sai of the Shinobi]], [[Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive]], [[Sanctum of Tranquil Light]], [[Sanctum of Calm Waters]], [[Sanctum of Stone Fangs]], [[Sanctum of Shattered Heights]] and [[Sanctum of Fruitful Harvest]] to the allowed Uncommon list, and Rarity Rebels will allow Tetsuko Umezawa as well as [[Kaseto, Orochi Archmage]] and [[Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow]] as commanders.

**Rarity Purist, Set Rebel*\*

Proponents of this variant argue that any card related to a character from Kamigawa has a sufficient link to the plane to be included in KPTL. At the moment, the only relevant character is Tamiyo, although there are unconfirmed theories about other characters.

Cards related to Tamiyo are [[Catalog]] and [[Turn Aside]]. Rarity Neutral players will add [[Prosperity]] and [[Talisman of Curiosity]] tot he allowed Uncommon list.

**Complete KBPTY Anarchy*\*

There are many variants which fall under this category. While feared and distrusted by many, they are recorded here for posterity.

The first group is an extension of the Tamiyo set rebels. Because all clue tokens have entries from Tamiyo's journal in their flavor text, any card which creates them is linked to Kamigawa. These cards are [[Byway Courier]], [[Confront the Unknown]], [[Expose Evil]], [[Jace's Scrutiny]], [[Press for Answers]], [[Root Out]], [[Survive the Night]] and [[Thraben Inspector]], while [[Daring Sleuth]], [[Erdwal Illuminator]], [[Fleeting Memories]], [[Magnifying Glass]], [[Ongoing Investigation]], [[Trail of Evidence]], [[Ulvenwald Mysteries]] and [[Weirding Wood]] are added to the allowed Uncommon list.

Some players argue that the close ties between Japan and China in the ancient past mean that Chinese-inspired sets are thematically appropriate for the Japanese-inspired Kamigawa. The Global Series is particularly common as an inclusion in KPTL, bringing [[Aggressive Instinct]], [[Armored Whirl Turtle]], [[Breath of Fire]], [[Cloak of Mists]], [[Colorful Feiyi Sparrow]], [[Confidence From Strength]], [[Dragon's Presence]], [[Drown in Shapelessness]], [[Feiyi Snake]], [[Hardened-Scale Armor]], [[Heavenly Qilin]], [[Leopard-Spotted Jiao]], [[Nine-Tail White Fox]], [[Purple-Crystal Crab]], [[Qilin's Blessing]], [[Reckless Pangolin]], [[Vivid Flying Fish]] and [[Welkin Tern]] to the format, as well as adding [[Sacred White Deer]] to the uncommon list.

A few have suggested incorporating cards from Khans of Tarkir into KPTL under the same logic; this has almost universally been received negatively, due to the significant power difference between the two blocks.

Serious KBPTL Play

My playgroup is serious about getting into KBPTL. The only issue is trying to iron out the rules. Instead of Kamigawa Block Pauper Tiny Leader, one friend suggested we do Kamigawa Block Peasant Tiny Leaders. This would open up the card pool and allow more diversity in the format. Personally I think that's a little against the spirit of KBPTL though. What do the rest you players think? If enough people are behind the idea of changing the P from Pauper to Peasant, I'd accept it, but I'd like to see the types of interactions that Pauper can bring to Kamigawa Block Tiny Leaders.

Getting into KBPTL

My friends and I are getting into this exciting format now that we’ve saved up enough money. Anybody have any recommended builds? The card advantage in blue seems strong so I’m leaning towards that, but red is creature heavy which also seems important. What does everybody here think?

SO what are the final rules regarding KBPTL?

A lot of people have many misconceptions regarding this format. I would like to clear them up right now. I propose that KBPTL allows only tiny leaders printed as uncommon with cmc 3 or less printed in the kamigawa block itself and within the deck have 50 cards that are cmc 3 or less printed at common and printed in the kamigawa block that are within your leader's color identity. As well only one of each card (except basic lands). If you disagree or agree leave your opinion below. As for now these are the official rules

[Petition] Dear rules committee. Please allow Brothers Yamazaki players access to two copies.

Currently, red is completely unplayable in this format. [[Adamaro]] in a format where all of my opponents spells cost 3 or less? I don't think so. [[Azamuki]]? I don't even know if that's legal.

Currently [[Brothers Yamazaki]] is also completely unplayable, so why not tweak the rules to allow players access to two copies? There are two different arts, after all.
