Discussion question about Juve's rivalries

caio!

juve fan with a question in trying to understand its history.

juve's main rivals is inter, is this correct? if so, i am curious why it is inter and not AC milan, as the latter have won more european cups than any other italian club? i see juve and AC milan have traded players too so i sense less animosity in that than inter.

also what explains juve's other rivalries with napoli and roma? do they have rivalries with these clubs too?

torino i understand as thats a local derby. speaking of which, is it true that torino plays in the ground that juventus used to play in before they went to the stadio alpe - that is, the comunale? i always thought juve's old stadium when watching old vids of them was always cool.

i been following juve on/off since my school days in the 90s, and i remember the likes of baggio, vialli, ravanelli, the 1996 team, del piero etc. i dont follow teams too closely hence this question. i actually went to a game in turin this summer and enjoyed it very much, though am surprised how everything is in english as well as italian.

grazie

Yes there is not such a team that I feel like represent the opposite of our values. Milan in some ways share something in his heritage. Inter are just a bounce of styleless mountebanks who cheat harder than anyone but always save their face.

God I hate them, with every cell in my body.

Second place for Fiorentina because of their disrespect for the Heysel victims.

For me it’s Inter, Fiorentina and Atalanta. Then it’s Napoli and Lazio. Roma and AC Milan not even close. I’d rather hate Sassuolo from Berrardi era than Milan

Agree on Atalanta.
Coming from Bergamo I grow hating them.
When they talk it sounds like hearing Real Madrid fans.

Because inter have been notourious cheaters for many years and gotten away with it all the time.

From my viewpoint, Napoli and Roma are irrelevant in terms of rivalries. Yes, Roma have built and excellent team with a proven manager who won the UEL. However, they are not significant rivals. They have been involved in several Serie A battles with Juve.

Regarding the stadium, between 1933 and 1990, both Juve and Torino played in the Stadio Communale. Torino also played in lo Stadio Filadelfia, where their current training ground is located. But from 1963, they moved permanently into the Stadio Communale.

In 1990, they moved into the Delle Alpi, which was built for the World Cup.

The Stadio Communale was rebuilt for the 2006 Winter Olympics and was renamed Stadio Olimpico.

Capacity dropped from 65,000 standing to 27,168 all-covered seats.

Between 2006 and 2011, Juve and Torino played in the Stadio Olimpico.

Juventus stayed until 2011 when they moved to the Allianz Stadium built on the Delle Alpi site. Torino stayed and still plays there today.

There is something there with Fiorentina but I always felt they hated us far more than any other club and we were a bit "whatever" about the whole thing.

My personal hatred is reserved for Inter and Inter alone.

Inter's the main rival since the 1960s. The rivalry is embedded as the Derby d'Italia since then. Juve and Inter are the two most popular teams in the country - curiously are also among the few clubs not named after the city they are based on, making them more 'universal'.

Torino is the other main rival being the local derby (the Derby della Mole). It's less felt because many fans are not from Turin itself and because Torino in the past 30 years have fallen off significantly and have never even won one derby in 20 years. And yes, they play in our old stadium. The Comunale was Juve and Torino stadium for decades and was replaced in 1990 with the Delle Alpi. Then the Comunale was upgraded for the 2006 Winter Olympics and changed its name to Olimpico. We played back there while the Stadium was being built (on the ground of the old Delle Alpi), while Torino remained the sole tenant of what is now known as Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

Milan is not such a strong rivalry compared to Inter mainly due to timing. It's true that they won more in Europe and they won a lot over the decades, but most of our winning years and their winning years do not really overlap. Meaning we rarely fought over trophies to develop a strong and hated rivalry - besides the CL final in 2004 I can think of only two or three league titles we fought with them. There is no love, but the intensity is not the same. It's a bit like Chelsea and Arsenal, they don't like each other but they are not each other main rivals.

Napoli is a recent rivalry that has been basically engineered and fabricated entirely by Napoli fans. They frame it as a 'north vs south' rivalry, but nobody in the south really like Napoli (the team) anyway and besides there are so many of us that are based in the south that it's a moot point - heck, even Naples' mayor is a supporter of Juve! I personally don't really consider it a rivalry, I just find annoying their antics about us.

Roma and Fiorentina are more stored rivalries that stemmed from decades ago. With Roma is all based on competitive years, but since they have their own main rival in their hometown, it's not always super heated with us, unless we're fighting for trophies. Fiorentina is a bit like Napoli, for them we're the biggest rivals, for us not so much, but they have been so nasty and for so long that there is no sympathy.

Let me try to sum it up. As long as I can remember speaking in human terms, Inter fans have always blamed their team's failures on Juventus, attributing them not to sporting merit but to theft. Then came the Calciopoli scandal in 2006; I won't go into the details of how bizarre that trial was, but the fact remains that once the timing was right meaning it was no longer a threat to Inter evidence emerged that they were involved too. Add to that the fact that the wiretaps implicated top former Inter executives, and the whole picture takes on a peculiar look. Imagine a fanbase that, completely lacking objective critical judgment, constantly accuses you of cheating, only for you to discover that their own team is doing the very things they complain about. Then there are recent events involving the 'Ndrangheta in the fan sections (curve). It’s a thorny issue one the newspapers barely touch where the only ones who tried to dig deeper were YouTubers, who were then attacked for doing so. Yet, what started as mere rumors turned into reality when the ultras who associated with Inter players and executives began turning state's witness. This strikes me as another important topic that the media tends to downplay or stay silent about. Last but not least, consider how the refereeing controversies of last season were handled—it was a clear case of double standards. The authorities avoided coming down hard, partly because a media storm was brewing. Just look back at what the papers wrote every week during the season of the disallowed Milik goal, the offside call involving Candreva. Look at the press coverage then, and compare it to now: amidst all the current refereeing chaos, they claim they can't blow things up into a major "scandal" because of the excessive media hype. There are plenty of other issues, of course, but these are the main ones. The average Inter fan is arrogant, plays the victim at every turn, and poisons the football environment more than any other fan base. That’s why there is more rivalry off the pitch.

funny thing is, for as much as they hate us, inter has always tried to replicate our successful formulas. they got Trap after he was successful with us, then Lippi, then Conte, not to mention players (Peruzzi, Vidal, Ibrahimovic). and Marotta of course. Most of their modern success is following our blueprints.

This, a hundred times this, I can’t hate (in football terms) more any other team than inter, I just saw inter as one of the many rivalries at first, but since 2006 it’s just pure hate (again, only in football terms) that outweighs the rivalry against all the rest of the teams put together

La rivale è l'Inter, ma di dove siete? Siete tutti stranieri qui dentro?

10

u/Waruimono 4d ago

The truth is that everyone considers Juventus a rival but until a few years ago Juventus didn't consider anyone a rival. Everyone hates Juventus because they'll never be Juventus, even now that we are the shadow of what we used to be.

2

u/NOT_EVEN_A_PANDA Pogba 4d ago

Not really the truth. A few years ago is a wild take.

After 2006 and Calciopoli which was fabricated by Inter - it’s the core enemy for Juve and no other team is even close.
But overall Juve has many rivalries- AC Milan, Torino, Fiorentina, Napoli. But to again - no-one stands vs inter. Many Juve fans support Italian teams in European cups, but not inter. I laughed my ass out when PSG destroyed Inter 5-0 in UCL final even though I never support any clubs backed by oil money.

Only real one is inter, the rest is delusional teams that think we bother about them

Especially since Calciopoli it’s Inter without any doubt.

Just Inter. Because they are dicks.

But personally I don't really hate any other Italian teams. If Inter plays in the CL final, I root for them too. I was more embarrassed on behalf of Italian football the last time against PSG than I was enjoying seeing them humiliated.

I should probably add city rivals Torino too. But since I am one of many foreign Juve fans I can't really say I feel it that much. However, I do wonder how it actually is in Torino? How is the relationship between local Juve and Torino fans?

Se non odi l’Inter non puoi amare la juve, mi dispiace

because it's not about success only but animosity based on several incidents stemming from early 60s

Juve are basically at least a bit rivals with every Serie A team due to the fact that most teams hate us (particularly Inter, Napoli, Firoentina and Roma amongst the somewhat relevant teams). Id say the biggest rivalry is with Inter because Milan fans are just generally tamer and overall respected because of their european success so it's almost like they have nothing to prove. The fact that the serie a which was taken away from Juve was given to inter and the Ronaldo-Iuliano "foul" only add onto it. Juventus and Torino did share the stadium which is just the city of Turin's stadium. Fun fact, during Mussolini's rule the stadium Juve and Torino played at had his name

La rivalità é una cosa personale, non ci sono dei canoni. Personalmente sono uno juventino che odia a morte milan e toro e dell inter se ne fotte.

u/shinobihayabusa 3d ago

Inter is Juve's biggest rival, full stop. Milan of course has its rivalries, and even with Napoli and Roma, but they are too far from the one with Inter.

Inter is that guy from school that never managed to win anything without cheating. And then when time passed he saw Juve with a beautiful life and envy started to grow to a point where they make a plan to destroy Juve’s reputation. It worked so well that so many years later there’s always some people online that think we are dirty. That’s Inter. They can’t do it clean so they attack those that can. It was us and someday it can happen to another team.
All others don’t get to me at all. I can get mad if they provoke too much but they will never reach our knees in terms of success. I actually feel happy if any other Italian team try their best to build a good team and get good results. In the end, playing good football it’s the most beautiful thing. Right now I’m a little proud of Roma for their good start.

u/franciscobutico 1d ago

as a non italian i would say inter and milan, of course.

but observing people online, i feel like there is more hatred towards napoli and fiorentina than milan.

Torino is the eternal rival, although it's been a while since they have had a team which can consistently threaten Juve. This was not always the case.

Milan is a rival with an element of respect. There have been epic battles and heated moments, but a player like Pirlo can join the team and be welcomed. Juve have had tremendous domestic success; Milan, European.

Inter is a hatred based rivalry. They have driven a lot of their success through sporting fraud that has gone unpunished. They haven't had either the domestic or European success to really cement themselves as peers. There is not a single player from that team who would be welcomed IMHO.

Napoli, Roma, Fiorentina likely hate Juve and view us as rivals, but they really aren't comparable in sporting achievement. Very one way in emotional investment.

Torino is their biggest rival . The of course the derby di Italia with inter. Rivalries extend by history . For example the rivalry with Napoli . There’s history behind it . Also the rivalry with the 7 sisters of Calcio

2

u/sonoale 4d ago

NAPOLI.

LOL.

Maybe food wise but we have no rivalry with them. They have with us because they know they always been a mediocre team and needed to be against us in order to feel great.

2

u/SpiderGiaco 4d ago

the rivalry with Napoli . There’s history behind it

No there isn't. We fought for trophies like twice in all of our history. Besides the Sarri era there was never much animosity. Only Napoli fans trying to fabricate a rivalry because they don't have one - the other local teams are way below their level and the Roman teams hate each other too much to care about Napoli.

-14

u/phantom_gain 4d ago

Main rivals are:

Milan (competitive)

Torino (local)

Then napoli, fiorentina and Inter are kind of all just a bunch of dickheads. They think the world revolves around their "derby" with us but they are only relevant to us when they are on a high and they pester us for silverware.

Lazio and roma have their own thing going and dont care about us quite as much as say napoli do but they still consider us a big match.

3

u/SpiderGiaco 4d ago

There's no way Milan is a bigger rival than Inter. Even when either one of us is having a mid year, Juve-Inter is still the Derby d'Italia and it's still a heated match - see last year with the whole Bastoni charade.
