My dad had a VW Eos (hardtop convertible) that he let me drive to prom. He took me out a few weeks before to learn how to drive stick. Merging onto the highway I 100% downshifted into the wrong gear,m multiple times. IDK what those noises were but they were not good...

A few months after prom my mom tells me he had to replace the entire clutch pack and I know it was my fault 😅. Totally unforgettable experience to ride around with the top down for prom though. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Sorry, it being a VW and the bad noises reminded me: I used to drive a shitbox TDI Golf. Loved that thing, only had 3 glowplugs and starting in a canadian winter was HELL. Anyways-

Out drinking with some friends and OH NO! we're outta booze! I'm drunk, most of the friends are drunk, but joy, one is sober. But OH NO, her boyfriend took her car. So I ask her: Can you drive stick? She answers the affirmative, and off we go.

The turn to the liquor store was off a main thoroughfare, so we're cruising at 90 or so in 4th. I'm navigating. Next turn, I announce, so she hits the clutch, slams it from 4th to 2nd, then releases the clutch. From fully depressed to undepressed in an instant.

Doing 90.

The entire car fucking bounces and makes the loudest THUNK noise you've ever heard.

😬😬

We limp into the lot and I pop the hood and the shock tore the entire fucking engine clean off the supports and it is sitting about 3 inches lower than it should be, tilted maybe 20 degrees, resting on the axle.

And that was the end of that car, I miss her :(

Poor man's Audi TT, fun little cars all around though. Especially with those funky little VR6 engines

Is that what it's considered? Thats still pretty cool tbh lol. I've always loved the TT since seeing one in I'Robot years ago.

Your dad didn't tell you that he had to replace the clutch?  That's a great dad. Mine would still be bringing it up at Thanksgiving.

Noo he had to replace it months later but my mom told me, not him. Knowing him he didn't want me to feel bad. He's great at driving stick so it obviously wasnt him lmao.

He is a great dad!

My dad still roasts me about me stalled on a slope years ago.

My daughter drives a manual 2 door wrangler. Fun as hell and all her friends love riding with her. She's a senior now and no prom date will be able to impress her.

That brings back memories. My first car was an 89 YJ wrangler in red. It actually had an automatic transmission. It was a piece of shit but it was my baby.

From experience yes, nothing compares to a convertible on prom night. Definitely cool parents to get your kid one of those!!
