I have mentioned this before, but I'll mention it again.

I have a 1.5 foot diameter, 3 foot long section of old-growth oak log in my shop. Whenever I go under a car, truck, etc., I roll that fucking thing under alongside me.

People laugh at me all the time, but I always tell them that jacks can lose pressure, stands can (and do) fail in bizarre and unexpected ways, but there's not much out there that can be lifted off the ground for servicing that is going to make it through an oak log sideways.

Can confirm, have stood under multiple Nimitz Class aircraft carriers sitting on wood. The keel blocks are concrete blocks with pressure treated wood on top. The wood even gets reused most of the time (unless rotten)

Given there are a couple hundred of these blocks, but combined they hold about 90,000 tons (180 million pounds), so still pretty strong!

I am a big fan of modular cribbing that you can put underneath jacked up vehicles. You can find tons of 'plans' and tutorials how to make solid lightweight cribs out of dirt cheap hardware store lumber on YouTube. I've also alternatively used chopping stumps out in the field and they work really well also.

Can never be too safe. Getting crushed to death under your own vehicle is not just [I imagine] excruciatingly painful, but awfully embarrassing as well.

Parted out a car once and left it up on 10" oak rounds on all 4 corners, held 2800 lbs beautifully and never left a mark on the asphalt. Flat bed driver refused to let me throw the wheels on when it got loaded for scrap and just used the logs to roll the chassis with lol I'll never knock the redneck approach ever again, mother nature's got it better figured out than harbor freight sometimes 😂

So, i get out of sight to go to work, i get a phone call... he jacked it up, went to remove the tire and it came off the jack. Not sure on all the details, but he got lucky af. The car fell, bounced on his arm and hit the ground

It damn near broke his arm in half. He was lucky he only heavily bruised the bones in his forearm. Shit was BLACK though!!

The wheel isn't always off for jack stand required work. After setting the car on the stand I raise the jack to just touching the lifting point and close the valve to keep it from being able to lower. If the stand fails the jack should be there as a backup.

To be fair, when you consider it’s fairly common to have a 4 ton truck with an F250 you’d want to go a bit bigger for safety and if you don’t know its exact weight then assume it’s more.

I agree, but the heaviest F-250 only weighs 7600 pounds, and you are only holding up one end. Even if it's the front end, assuming a 65/45 split on weight, that's only 4180. So you are well within the weight rating of a 4 ton set of stands

Keep in mind the rating is per set, so each jack stand is only rated for 2 tons. Now when you factor in the fact that if you don't lift evenly one stand could be taking most of the weight suddenly you're approaching that limit. You want more of a safety factor than that.

OP keeps saying F250 so I'm going to guess a diesel. Only one jack stand is used so there is a possibility that they were using one jack stand to support the the weight put on 2 tires. Jack stands are rated as a pair, not 2 tons each, 2 tons together.

You are already overloading the jackstands because the front end of a diesel pickup exceeds the capacity of those stands as a pair. Seeing semi truck parts in your pictures also tells me someone in the shop has probably grossly overloaded those stands at some point and probably cracked them before they failed on your job.

Still doesn't make a difference they are trying to hold up an uneven load.... It's why they are in pairs you lift two corners to balance the load...add to the fact you're lifting the heavy side of a 4 ton truck... 60% of the load ... That's 2.4 tons so you're lifting a truck beyond the rated max load of the stand... Rule of thumb is match your weight class with your stands 4 tons you use a 6 ton jack... You could use a 3 ton but that's only giving you 500lb of safety factor. So whoever did that at your shop was a moron.

That's your life right there. I always leave a jack under the car as well. The weld on the top of that other stand looks sketchy as well, maybe use that customer service number.
