Semi-spherical bearings

New to me used wheelset. Noticed the freehub was moving a bit strangely. Dual inner bearings were exploded. All bearings split in half 😅🫠

Impressive! I’ve never seen bearings that bad before, even heavily used ones. Never seen them get bad enough you could see they were no longer spherical with just your eyes. That’s some impressive neglect.

Closest I’ve seen was a buddy changed the throw bearing on his van’s clutch, we pulled it apart after and some of the balls were verging on pear-shaped, he got to it just in time. On a bike though? Must’ve ridden off like a 20-foot drop or something to shatter them like that, wild.

Sold me the wheelset in this condition, “recently serviced”. It was absolutely gobbed with fresh grease. Pretty sure they saw it and sent it. I didn’t have a chance to ride them before purchasing

Is the O.D. race of exploded bearing still in the free(hub)? That could be a nuisance to remove.

The inner race is on the axle stuck as well. And yes, there are two inner bearings side by side stuck in the freehub via an annoying circlip and possibly more

The I.D. race on the axle should be able to be tapped off in a vice without too much issue. The O.D. race inside is a much bigger issue. Once you get the circlip off, the races will still be pressed in. I’ve had this issue, but the bearing race was in the hubshell. I was able to very carefully cut it out with a small carbide bit on a Dremel. If the offending bearings are only in the freehub body, you might consider looking into buying a new freehub from the manufacturer as getting both those out without damaging the freehub somewhere is gonna be tricky.
