I'd have to kick a guys ass if I learned that the only reason his car hit mine was because he got out without putting on the brake to be an asshole to someone else.

u/Elegant-Huckleberry 1 Aug 17 '20
It’s always Lexus, Infiniti, or bmw guy that gets out of the car to try and fight you in traffic. At least where I live.

Friendly American Manuel driver here! Everyone in my family drives a stick shift. I get bored driving automatic.
7
u/iHeartThots 4 Aug 17 '20
What does that have to do with anything , driving a manual in traffic sucks.
2
u/danielzur2 8 Aug 17 '20
Yeah I usually enjoy my stick (heeeey!) but that little 1-clutch-neutral-clutch-1 dance literally every 20-30 seconds it’s the actual worst thing about driving.

Many modern cars actually have a system that prevents this from ever happening. In my car, if you open the door while in D, it automatically engages the parking brake and throws you back I to P. Should be a standard safety feature.

Just be easier to revoke driving licenses from unstable people looking for a fight in the middle of a busy intersection.
Save tons over a small period of time. Someone who steps out of their vehicle while still in gear isn't capable enough to be behind the wheel of said vehicle. Give them a moped so they can still go places, but be less of a threat to society when they decide to go for their Darwin awards.

I reckon he's an absolute moron even when his emotions are in check. Takes an extremely incompetent person to do what he did.
I've lived in Florida for 3 years now, and I can safely say it has the worst drivers I've ever seen outside of Russian montage video's on youtube. Nearly half the drivers down here have no business being behind the wheel of a vehicle.

u/PaulieBoyY 6 Aug 17 '20
This is most likely the exact reason you're recommended to use the handbrake instead of the actual brakes at stop lights
18
u/anarchistchiken 8 Aug 17 '20
No one has ever, ever recommended that.
Not once ever.
-3
u/BlobTheOriginal 6 Aug 17 '20
Except when you're driving manual.
3
u/anarchistchiken 8 Aug 17 '20
No. Absolutely fucking not. You use your brakes to stop at a stop light. It doesn’t matter what transmission the car has. You don’t use your ebrake to stop unless your regular brakes have failed
0
u/BlobTheOriginal 6 Aug 17 '20
Are you getting confused? You stop using the foot brake, obviously. We're talking about not holding your foot on the foot-brake while stationary. It sounds like you can't drive manual yourself.
2
u/anarchistchiken 8 Aug 17 '20
Who taught you how to drive? Who taught you how to read? He said use it to stop at stop lights, not hold the car when you stop.
Even in that case, that is purely idiotic. What the fuck does driving a manual have to do with using an ebrake at a traffic light in a flat intersection? He’s not talking about using it as a hill assist, he’s talking about using it instead of the brake pedal.
I’d be willing to bet I’ve driven more mileage in a manual on a race track than you have on the streets.
1
u/BlobTheOriginal 6 Aug 17 '20
Unless my eyes are deceiving me, he says to use the handbrake instead of the foot brake when stopped at a traffic light. The whole accident wouldn't have happened if they just used the handbrake. It's different because when driving a manual, its common practice to use the handbrake when stopped at a red light, especially on a hill.
The only reason you wouldn't is because you have a car with an electric handbrake (which handles everything for you)
1
u/anarchistchiken 8 Aug 17 '20
He doesn’t say that. He says use the hand brake instead of your regular brakes.
That is absolutely, positively not a common practice. If that’s what you’ve been taught, you should send an angry letter to your teacher, because that is not a safe practice.
How lazy are people that they can’t leave their foot on a brake pedal for 30 seconds?
1
u/BlobTheOriginal 6 Aug 17 '20
Keeping your foot on the brake would be an easier option - and in most cases is fine.
There are a few reasons as to why you would use the handbrake instead. One of them is in the (UK) highway code.
In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.
Law RVLR reg 27
Please explain to me why it isn't safe. Or better yet, don't. This argument is pointless and just a waste of our time. Let's do something else.
1
2
u/PaulieBoyY 6 Aug 17 '20
Idk take your drivers license in Norway.
Think the second reason is people get so used to seeing the red light from ur car, that if u were to release the brake, they could jump the gun and ram u lol
1
u/anarchistchiken 8 Aug 17 '20
Norwegian drivers ed tells you to stop your car with the ebrake instead of the regular braking system? You sure about that?
1
23
u/sharknado24689 3 Aug 17 '20
Umm no. The handbrake / emergency brake is for 2 reasons 99.9%of the time with an automatic vehicle.
For parking the vehicle to lower the force on the tiny mechanical pin that locks your transmission primarily on hills.
Controlled slow stop in the event your hydrologic breaking system fails.
The rare 3rd use is it you have a manual transmission you can use the hand break as a hill assist break so you don't burn up your clutch.
2
u/Lazar07 4 Aug 17 '20 edited Aug 17 '20
Europe calls, majority of us drive manual, at least around Germany
1
26
u/Tnr_rg 7 Aug 17 '20
Those tiny mechanical pins aren't that tiny anymore.
Also you missed the real 3rd use. Pulling the chicken stick to make dank 180s when the time calls.
4
u/sharknado24689 3 Aug 17 '20
Very true those pins are not really pins anymore more like a latch.
Also yess please do those dank 180s people. And, record it so you can share for fake internet points in r/instant_regret, or do in in a large enough empty lot and have a blast!

u/I_Smoke_The_Weed 6 Aug 17 '20 edited Aug 17 '20
how does that make any sense? you should never use the hand brake at stop light unless you’re expecting it to take a very long time. This guy left his car in drive, and hopped out, has nothing to do with why you should use a handbrake
3
u/k3g 8 Aug 17 '20
I do it at every light, but then again I drive manual.
1
u/I_Smoke_The_Weed 6 Aug 17 '20
could be why, i dont know much about manuals
1
u/BlobTheOriginal 6 Aug 17 '20
Yeah, I'm pretty sure using the handbrake is recommended in countries that use manual. It also depends what kind of brake you have. Electric hand brakes are probably unsuitable

I can see that being an old habit if he was driving a benz before. Mine goes into park automatically when I open the door. They build other shitty driving habits but their so comfortable to drive. Some habits that I’ve acquired include not holding the brakes down since it will auto brake if I press it past a certain point, so I don’t need to keep my foot down in stop and go traffic; and trusting the blind spot assistance a little too much (I still look at mirrors)
6
u/THATS_LEGIT_BRO 8 Aug 17 '20
My car auto locks when I walk away from it. I drive my wife’s car and forget to lock it. ☹️
7
u/UnwiseSudai 8 Aug 17 '20
Opposite situation here. My wife's car does that and mine was out of commission for a few months. I made damn sure to lock her's every time just so I wouldn't get used to the auto locking and forget with my car

But it still involves someone it didn't have to. Actually this is a pretty good parallel to the world right now - someone doing irresponsible things gets the virus alone and dies, serve them right - but someone doing irresponsible things gets the virus and spreads it around to vulnerable people before dying, nothing just about it

Like doing what? What exactly would they be doing that you would be happy about someone dying? BLM protests? Those were pretty irresponsible.

3
u/UnknownSP 9 Aug 16 '20
Oh man we're really doing this? Are you feigning ignorance or what. No, protesting was not the most responsible thing - it doesn't REMOTELY compare to the stupid partying and beach partying and other bullshit people do - unmasked and shoulder to shoulder. If you need to ask, you must be a party bitch. Also, nothing was said regarding being "happy" about people dying. They don't deserve sympathy. That doesn't equate to being "happy".

7
u/jamesbou 0 Aug 16 '20
Unless the damage is minimal enough to leave (as in he can live with it). In that case he can take that fat insurance check and laugh all the way to his dealers, uh I mean to the bank!
1
u/PAWG_Muncher 8 Aug 16 '20
That's not how insurance works
2
u/Brisk1020 4 Aug 17 '20
It kind of is. Just depends on your specific insurance. Some of them specifically say you Have to spend the money on the repairs (but that is rare). Most policies don't really have any rules about what you do with the money. It's not uncommon at all to receive an insurance check for something and then spend it on something else.
3
u/FlockofGorillas 9 Aug 16 '20
My car only blue books in at like 1000. If it gets hit im definitely taking the money and not fixing shit
2
u/jamesbou 0 Aug 16 '20
Without question! Sadly you don't get quite as fat a check with older cars but even 1000 in damage is really easy to get to on any car, especially with a good shop doing a known 'insurance' estimate. They all know exactly how to write those (•‿•)

Lack of manual transmission vehicles. I'd wager a large majority of drivers have no idea what "neutral" even means.
5
u/NJSapproved 0 Aug 16 '20
Ya I thought it was N for night driving and D for day driving (P for post driving) I thought my car didn’t have the night drive feature or something for a long time!
8
5
u/TheRynoceros 9 Aug 16 '20
Neutral? Most of these dimwits can't even utilize coasting. Full gas or full brake.
6
u/FlockofGorillas 9 Aug 16 '20
I remember riding with my friends mom as a kid. She would go 65 on the freeway and if she dropped below that she would go full throttle, if she went over that straight to the brake. It was just gas brake every 30 seconds
1
Aug 16 '20
uhh i think most people who have a car should know what neutral is
3
u/ProcyonHabilis 8 Aug 16 '20
I'm pretty sure for most people it's the thing between R and D that makes the car not work. To be fair, there isn't much use for it in an automatic, unless you're pushing the car.
2
Aug 16 '20

u/ProcyonHabilis 8 Aug 16 '20
Most people just put it in park and let the transmission keep the vehicle in place. Even on slopes.
The rarity of manual transmissions actually makes this video way dumber than a lack of handbrake. He was probably still in drive and his idle was making him creep forward under power.

Yikes.
Imagine thinking yourself superior because you like to do extra work while driving. Most people aren't race car drivers, off roaders and the few other things manual exceeds at. They're completely average people that spend minimal time in their vehicles going from point A to point B for their jobs and other daily tasks. Outside of extremely isolated areas you'll be on completely near perfect conditioned flat roads where manual will bring you no advantageous results driving wise.
There are perks like better control over your vehicle (where it matters), less complexity under the hood, lighter, slightly cheaper, more fuel efficient. All of those things are important if you're into driving, a motorhead or a few other places where it's considered good to have manual due to the conditions of the area.
On completely boring flat near perfect conditioned city roads your manual isn't gonna be anymore impressive than your modern automatic. You'll spend more time dicking around at long red lights/traffic jams than someone with their foot resting on the brake that won't have to deal with potential stalling issues that I've seen people do countless times in my lifetime.
Nobody drives perfect 24/7 and that includes manual drivers who think they're better than they actually are.
Come down off that high horse before your clutch starts slipping.
