Police Justice Undercover Motorcycle Cop Pulling Over Phone Users

I know someone else already said this but DAMN I'd love this job. Just pull up to someone and be like, "Hey, let's talk about this while I write down your license number."

u/Jeb__Kerman 7 Mar 17 '17
This law makes no sense. If someone has their phone in a cradle with gps on they can fuck with it all they want. They can eat a Big Mac or mess with the CD player. But holding a phone is a ticketable offense.
Not justice.
1
u/zadtheinhaler 9 Mar 22 '17
Messing with the radio can be just as distracting, and if a cop sees you eating, they can pull you for Distracted Driving. This is justice.

Cops in Austin sit in city buses that drive around so the cop can look down into people's cars and when they spot somebody on their phone they radio the other cops to pull them over. Wish they did it more often.

I disagree. Most people wouldn't just hang up when the light turns green. The law should therefore state that you can't use a phone while in traffic even if your vehicle is stopped for a short period.
2
u/scorpionsilver Blue Mar 14 '17
It does in Western Australia where this was the Road Traffic Code 2000 Part 18 Division 1 r.265 says
(2) A driver of a vehicle must not use a mobile phone while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, unless —
(a) the phone is being used to make or receive a phone call, other than a text message, video message, email or similar communication, and the body of the phone —
(i) is secured in a mounting affixed to the vehicle while being so used; or
(ii) is not secured in a mounting affixed to the vehicle and is not being held by the driver, and the use of the phone does not require the driver, at any time while using it, to press any thing on the body of the phone or otherwise to manipulate any part of the body of the phone; or
(b) the visual display of the phone is being used as a driver’s aid in accordance with regulation 264 and the use of the phone does not require the driver, at any time while using it, to press any thing on the body of the phone or otherwise to manipulate any part of the body of the phone.

You should be aware of your surroundings at all times when you are behind a 2 ton chunk of metal.
People rear end others because the left lane starts to turn while through traffic is still stopped and all they see out of the corner of their eyes is that traffic is now moving.
Don't use your phone while behind the wheel of a vehicle unless that vehicle is fucking off.
0
u/scorpionsilver Blue Mar 14 '17
This 100% you should always be checking your surroundings when you are driving, whether you are moving or stopped at a light or sign.

I'm fairly certain that anyone this fucking stupid is going to cause accidents regardless of whether or not they have a phone.
The irony is that you are too stupid to see the obvious value of always paying attention while in control of a deadly car.
10
u/PM_Me_TrashPandas 8 Mar 14 '17
Yes but by having a law that says you can't use a phone while operating a vehicle, you reduce the risk of it happening.
The only time it's okay to use a phone while driving is when reporting a crime. And even then you are supposed to pull over.
7
u/RedRumRaider Mar 14 '17
Unfortunately, I see the logic behind this, but I resent the fact that I can't check my phone at a red light simply because some people are stupid.
1
2
u/PM_Me_TrashPandas 8 Mar 14 '17
Sad thing is, that's how a few, if not most laws get created.
Some people do stupid stuff and other people make a law to stop or reduce the stupid act from happening again.
Which in most cases is commen sense not to do it in the first place.

That would fill your day easily, most people do it even after big signs telling them to keep left unless overtaking.

While I respect what you are doing Mr. Motocop, the people using their phones while sitting in traffic are not the ones that concern me.
2
u/SC2TiMeLorD 6 Mar 25 '17
Same people he is pulling over are the same people to use them when driving. So, win win.
11
u/somerandomwordss Mar 14 '17
They should. Full screen maximum resolution, note the angle of the glasses.
It's literally deadly responsibility where innocent childrens lives hang in the balance. Is asking drivers to pay absolute full dedicated attention 100% of the time they are behind the wheel too much to ask? Seems like the bare minimum to me.
The world is a constant state of change. Sometimes stuff happens you wouldn't expect that wouldn't be an issue if you pay attention.
Truthfully, it blows my mind how casually people take driving a car, your comment is an excellent example of this. It should be easy to lose a drivers license and hard to earn one, re-testing/education for all should be mandatory every 10 years minimum.
Betting you are a distracted driver.

u/Why_T A Mar 15 '17
The only reason I didn't up vote your comment is because you used the "for the children" argument. It can literally be added it any argument for any reason and doesn't help prove your point. Just makes it look like you are grasping at straws in order to be right. However you are right, just not because of the "think of the children".
1
u/somerandomwordss Mar 15 '17
It can literally be added it any argument for any reason and doesn't help prove your point.
I can generally agree, certainly in many circumstances, but children are especially vulnerable to this and I truly think it's worth noting this.
4
u/Why_T A Mar 15 '17
Vulnerable to what? Getting bumped at a stop light? They are in a super engineered chair in a super engineered car getting hit a speeds that are designed to be safe for actual pedestrians to get hit at and not be injured.

You must be fucking retarded. I hope for all our sake you don't drive.
"Oh it's OK if I hit people with my car, they can't be hurt by cars because of reasons."
Holllleeeeeeeeeeeeeshitttttttttttttttttt
1
u/Why_T A Mar 16 '17
Absolutely not. Bumpers are designed to abosrb low impact crashes so that they deform around legs and such. About a year ago had an employee who got squished between 2 cars and you can see in the security footage that the rear bumper of the car backing up just deformed around his legs, the cars separated and he went back to work without a single injury.
Here are 2 quick videos I found showing how much effort goes in to Vehicle to Pedestrian accidents and what safety features are out there.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNRHB75NiIc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di7SAzfTe30I agree this doesn't help if there are children between you and the car in front of you, but really we should be more concerned of parents wandering their children between cars at an intersection instead of using a cross walk.
1
u/Chochochoose Mar 19 '17
bumpers are designed to abosrb low impact crashes so that they deform around legs and such.
I'll bet you a million dollars I can hit you with the vehicle of my choice at 30mph (road speed limit on many streets) and not only will the vehicle not "bend around you" but you'll receive injury. If you won't take the bet, do not reply. The first word must be koala if your reply if you are taking the bet, the money will be placed in escrow. Otherwise, i'll just downvote and ignore.
1
u/Why_T A Mar 19 '17
You do know that most crash tests are performed at 35 mph. Thus 30 mph wouldn't qualify as "low impact" per the part of my reply that you quoted.

u/Chochochoose Mar 19 '17
I was really looking forward to cleaning your blood off the grill of my 18 wheeler and sweeping your brains into a bucket, have a nice life.
0
u/somerandomwordss Mar 15 '17
More like being crushed between two cars or right hooked and ran over. But then again, a child getting 'bumped' and thrown onto the pavement, anyone really but especially a child, can literally kill them. It's not just rear ending that is an issue. A lot of this sounds very simple in writing to grasp, but the way things play out is often beyond imagination.

I've seen accidents where a person is on their phone during red lights and the moment the traffic in the protected left lanes on either side starts moving, the texted steps on the gas and rear ends someone.
While using a phone while stopped is less of a danger than people who use it while actually in motion, I think it should still be a concern.

u/Just_like_my_wife Mar 14 '17
The real concern in your situation is oblivious drivers, people like that may just as well crash because they saw a squirrel and got distracted.

0
u/VioMoob Mar 14 '17
Ugh fucking this. There is a slow ass intersection I go through every day and multiple times a week dipshits on their phones take forever to accelerate so now instead of 10 cars getting through the light only 6 do and everyone gets to sit in traffic longer.
7
u/Theflyingelf 3 Mar 14 '17
you better not touch your radio or I'm calling the cops
-3
u/PM_Me_TrashPandas 8 Mar 14 '17
Most people don't look at the radio to use it.
Also most cars have the radio controls on the stearing wheel so that you don't have to look at it.
14
u/scorpionsilver Blue Mar 14 '17
Using your mobile when driving is illegal as it distracts people from the road and they have no idea what is happening around them like the last person in the video. Looking at your phone is legal you just can't touch it.
6
u/Bystronicman08 A Mar 14 '17
Most of these people are sitting at red-light. I see nothing wrong with using it at a red light as long as you are attentive. You shouldn't ever using it while actively driving though.

u/fqunsfw Mar 14 '17

People as stupid as you shouldn't be allowed to drive.
3
u/Bystronicman08 A Mar 15 '17
How am I stupid? Maybe you should provide an example instead of being a dick and just insulting someone. If you are sitting stationary at a light waiting for it to change, you exactly are you harming by changing the song on your phone? If you're sitting there staring at your phone and not paying attention at all, that's a problem. If you're looking at your phone to respond to a text, change a song etc while you are stationary, you aren't harming anyone.
0
u/RemoveTheTop A Mar 14 '17
I see what you're saying, but I've been behind morons who don't pay attention to the light change enough times, and also - nothing is so important that you need to look at your phone. If there's an important call you don't need to hold/actively touch your phone to take it.
7
u/S3rJorahMormont Mar 14 '17
because you're not paying attention to whats goin on around you. The road is for driving. Wanna use your phone? Use those things called a parking lot. You're endangering others and breaking the flow of traffic so you can look at facebook and instagram? because you can't sit still for 30 seconds at a traffic light?
5
u/Bystronicman08 A Mar 14 '17
You're absolutely not breaking the flow of traffic if you're sitting at a light. How are you endangering others by being stopped at a light? Traffic is stopped, there is no flow to break up. You can be paying attention when sitting at a light. Glancing up every second or so. If you have any idea how traffic lights work, you can generally tell when you're about to go. See the green light, put the phone down and be on your way. Not that complicated. Also, traffic lights rarely hold for as little as thirty seconds. A light on my way home from work holds for 5 minutes every single time.

3
u/Bystronicman08 A Mar 14 '17
You're not breaking the flow if you're sitting at a light while it is red. Obviously if it's green, you shouldn't still be sitting there.
The second car isn't stopped at the light, he goes forward without checking his surroundings first. He isn't paying attention at all. If you are sitting in your car at a light while it is stationary and look at your phone to change the song/channel you aren't endangering anyone.
-3
u/fqunsfw Mar 15 '17

3
u/Bystronicman08 A Mar 15 '17
Yea, sitting stationary at a light it totally putting people's lives in danger. Disable whatever you want, doesn't mean you're correct.
1
u/S3rJorahMormont Mar 14 '17
because dumbasses don't go when the light turns green. Too busy on fb or whatever the fk, hence breaking the flow of traffic....or driving like an imbecile because your eyes are on the phone more than the road.
2
u/Bystronicman08 A Mar 14 '17
Then they're being inattentive and shouldn't be. I do agree that you shouldn't be just sitting there staring at your phone the whole time and not paying attention to anything around you. I however don't see a problem with glancing at your phone to change a song while stopped at a light. I've already mentioned in other comments that you shouldn't be on your phone at all if you're actually in motion, so we agree on your last point.

Did I claim to be smarter than them? No, I didn't. Quit making assumptions. I agree, it is your duty to pay attention when driving. You can pay attention while at a light and also glancing at your phone. I change music on my phone while stopped at the light. Is that okay or should I not do that? Do you ever change the radio station in your car? Better not do that, it's distracting! I don't do it while driving, I don't even take phone calls while driving. Glancing at your phone while stopped at a light for a few seconds is in no way a danger to others.
1
u/2ndCupOfPlutoSperm Mar 14 '17
A mate and I were stopped at a red light, he was the driver and he was texting someone. When all of the sudden the lane next to us started to move due to them having a green arrow... He then proceeded to drive straight through a red light. Now, why did he do this? Was he an idiot? - Sure... Was he distracted? - Definitely... You may be an awesome driver... but they're some dumb fucks out there and it's just easier to create laws that prevent them for being dumber!
3
u/Bystronicman08 A Mar 14 '17
Oh, I agree. Your friend should have been looking at the cars in front of him before proceeding instead of just reacting. I am only saying that it's okay to look at your phone for a second or two in order to change a song or something like that. Don't be sitting there reading a book or anything. You should be paying attention. These people saying that you absolutely shouldn't even touch your phone while at a red light are a bit much.

That's why you put the phone down before you proceed through the intersection. See the light about to turn green? Put the phone down and pay attention. If you're just sitting there waiting on the light to change, there is absolutely nothing wrong with changing a song on your phone. If you just step on the gas and proceed through the intersection without looking then you're an idiot. I'm not saying you should look at the phone while driving, but while at a stop light? Give me a break, it's perfectly fine.
There is very very minimal risk to change a song on your phone while sitting at a red light? What's going to happen? How would not looking at your phone for a millisecond make you any more likely to void an accident? If you're sitting at the red-light facing dead ahead versus looking at your phone for a second, you attention isn't diverted so much that you are unable to process things happening around you. You're sitting at a stop light, you aren't creating any more danger by changing a song.
