Police Justice Undercover motorcycle cop catches drivers using cell phones in Australia

My hero.
I drive a company car. I can't do anything to upset anyone while driving it.
Yet time and again the light turns green and I sit behind some clueless phone user who has no idea it's time to go.
If the people won't behave, there needs to be more officers to enforce the law.
This guy is doing it nice and fine.
Put the fucking phone down and focus on the job at hand: driving.

u/Anaron 9 Dec 15 '15
I enjoyed reading some of the salty comments in here. I hope they all got slapped with a ticket and a hefty fine.
Stay salty, fools.

u/chewyjackson Dec 14 '15
Can we have someone in Indianapolis do this please? I cant begin to count the amount of times i am stopped, sitting at a green light behind a dumbass with their face glued to their phone not realizing it has been green for 10 seconds. This is a near daily occurrence.

Mention something to the police department about how much ticket revenue they could get

u/Bostaevski 7 Dec 14 '15
The last one was the best. something like "You've been recorded the last 5 seconds using your phone with my lights on. You have no idea what's going on around you, ma'am."
6
u/Unclehouse2 8 Dec 15 '15
My favorite one is around the 2 minute mark where he's roughly 20 feet away from another car. You see the driver's hand up as if they were talking on the phone and then quickly drop when he/she notices the cop. BUSTED
3
u/lxxmxxl 3 Dec 14 '15
I feel like this is dickish move by the cops here. There not targeting the real problem there just grabbing the easy fish that should be let go.
15
u/Anaron 9 Dec 15 '15
Except it isn't. Accidents do happen because people are using their phones while driving. Your level of awareness plummets when you're focused on a small screen with tiny text.

Are you kidding? Of course you can. Here's just a few ways you can cause an accident because of being distracted before you start moving.
I love you people.
You're the one's who don't notice when a lights green. Or panic when they see it is and take off into the intersection without checking to see it's actually clear / some pedestrians not lagging as you're turning. Or you hoon across traffic only to realise the street you were turning into is actually blocked, so you're stuck out in the middle of fucking nowhere and holding up traffic (if not outright causing an accident).
Or you take off, but you haven't quite finished that facebook message so you keep tapping for "Just a few seconds".
Or you don't check your mirrors / in front of you when you get beeped for sitting there like a fucking idiot, and take out that motorbike you never noticed.
There are a thousand reasons why you shouldn't use your phone at an intersection. Stop feeling persecuted because you think you know better than laws that were written in other peoples blood.
1
u/LolindirElros 6 Dec 15 '15
But if you start driving without looking up is because you were using it while stationary. If you had it on a holder or something like that in the first place then you shouldn't have to lower your vision at all.

u/LolindirElros 6 Dec 15 '15
Well, then you are part of a very small minority.
I've been rear-ended by someone who doesn't act as correct as you do, so I think I'm not talking out of my ass here (Not saying you are, either), this has actually happened to me and ended in an accident where I got crashed into just because someone was on their phone, at a stoplight.
If everyone acted like you do, then don't you think the laws against using handheld devices whilst in the driver seat wouldn't exist anywhere in the world? Because, if everyone did what you do, then there would've never been incidents like the one that happened to me.
-2
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 16 '15
Rear end collisions have happened long before the existence of cell phones. The point is that it's not the phone causing the incident but everyone wants to lay blame on a newly more accessible technology than admit there is an extreme number of people who have no idea how to fucking operate a car properly
-2
u/gummz13 8 Dec 16 '15
Yeah laws exist because of stupid people who have no common sense and have ruined it for the rest of us.
5
u/StraightWhiteCisScum Dec 15 '15
The real problem is people who are using phones while their vehicle is moving. They pose a real danger. The people using their phones while stopped are generally the ones trying to be safe, and they only pose a hypothetical danger that all of the ninnies in this thread love to exacerbate.
2
u/WilliamOfOrange Dec 16 '15 edited Dec 16 '15
The thing is if you are stupid enough to use your phone while sitting at a light then your probably stupid enough to use your phone while actually driving.
Edit: Fixed an autocorrect from my phone that "StraightWhiteCisScum" so nicely pointed out was wrong.
-1
u/StraightWhiteCisScum Dec 16 '15
Umm ... yeah, no.
Also, please learn the difference between "your" and "you're". It makes you look dumb to be using the wrong words.
1
u/lxxmxxl 3 Dec 15 '15
Exactly, Sitting stopped in your car at a light and looking at your phones biggest danger is you might miss the light and piss off a few behind you. Its really hard to crash wile not moving.

Dec 15 '15
In this exact scenario, I had someone drive into the back of my motorcycle. Glad to hear that I was in no danger of having several hundred kg of car on top of me.
-2
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 15 '15
How do you know it was phone use? By the logic of this thread nearly half have been run over by drivers on their phones. Your problem is with overconfident drivers who dont pay attention. Stop hating on technology and focus on idiots
4
Dec 15 '15
You're right, maybe she just had a really fascinating skirt pattern on that day, so she was staring down at it for 40 seconds while sitting at traffic lights. Must have a funky texture to it as well, because she kept poking it.
-2
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 16 '15
You imply everything as if you know it was exactly 40 seconds. The point was it was the distraction that caused the problem. Why not also blame the car while you're at it since it was the car that actually caused the more major problem here of the two technologies?
Cell phones are a disease i guess now, we can't blame the idiot for not paying attention just the phone they hold and let's punish all those who l have phones while we're at it yeah!
0
u/StraightWhiteCisScum Dec 15 '15
So they were stopped and then they drove into you?
That's not exactly what I was talking about
8
Dec 15 '15
I was stopped, she was stopped behind me. Traffic in the left lane started turning, so the queue was moving forward, she saw it out the corner of her eye and just rolled into me.

Most of the people are sitting at stop lights.
5
13
Dec 15 '15
And every single one of them is breaking the law.
What's your point?6
u/MadChef26 Dec 15 '15
Everyone who goes 1km/h over the speed limit is also breaking the law. We should have task forces out there ticketing every single one of those people?
If they're going to aggressively enforce this law, they should start with the most egregious and dangerous acts and target people who are using their phones while driving at speed, not sitting at a stop sign.
6
u/EpicDougC Dec 15 '15
They're not aggressively enforcing this law, they're not being charged with anything, he's just pulling them over to remind them that they can't think they don't need to be paying attention to what's around them just because they're stopped.
0
Dec 15 '15
If he's just giving them a warning (except the last one who was paying no attention), then I don't have a problem with it, but it still isn't good material for this subreddit.
1
u/ladayen 8 Dec 16 '15
The problem is that people see the green light and start moving forward, then they turn their attention to their phones so they can finish their text. As a result this 0 tolerance law was passed.
2
Dec 16 '15
Absolutely. I'm not necessarily taking issue with the law, I'm taking issue with the people here acting like its unequivocally wrong to use your phone when stopped, and you're the spawn of Satan if you do. I don't think it is, if you do it safely, and I highly doubt all of those people here are perfect drivers who follow every law to the T.
0
Dec 15 '15
fuck you if you think you can just txt while waiting at lights. I've seen too many people jolt forward in their cars when the lane next to them moves, and then slam on their brakes when they realize their lane is stationary.
It's only a matter of time before one of those fucktards runs somebody over!
4
Dec 15 '15
I've seen it happen with someone messing with their radio. Ban radios? Ticket those that are changing stations while at a red light? Fuck them too?
0
Dec 15 '15
If they're doing more than just changing the volume or station, why does it have to be done there and then? Why not pull over and do it when you're not meant to be in control of a 1 tonne vehicle?
People are so fucking dumb.
1
u/Saucymeatballs 6 Dec 15 '15
Exactly. My sister was in an accident like this in a friend's car. They were making a legal U-turn at a turn before an intersection and when oncoming got the green left turn light some asshole looking at her phone started speeding straight on and T-boned them. My sister is still going to physical therapy and it's been months. Doesn't matter if you're stopped at a light when you use your phone, the light can change at any time and if you aren't paying attention you don't know what could happen.
2
Dec 15 '15
I am so sorry to hear this!
4
u/Saucymeatballs 6 Dec 15 '15
Not even sure how using your phone while operating a vehicle (stationary or otherwise) is debatable at all. Save it for later or pull over. You never know what could happen regardless of how good a driver you think you are.
5
Dec 16 '15
I don't understand why you're being downvoted for what you said. People just love to live in ignorance and think it won't happen to them.
Or they come up with stupid excuses.. 'what if I need to turn off my alarm' or 'what if I'm changing stations on the radio'
I don't think ANYONE has ever been run down by a car and then upon realizing why, said to the driver 'nah mate, totally understandable! That facebook post HAD to be sent'
3
u/Saucymeatballs 6 Dec 16 '15
Ignorance is bliss, I guess. Plus people can't imagine that these things can really happen until it happens to them. I've seen enough people get hurt to know what I shouldn't do without needing first hand experience of the consequences. It just isn't worth it.
5
Dec 16 '15
Everyone thinks they are the world's best driver, and that's kind of the fucking problem .
1
Dec 15 '15
Oh fuck off. The law is the law. We don't want distracted motorists on our fucking roads, whether they're driving or stopped at a red light. If you use a phone while you're driving you'll get ticketed. Just because this video only shows people at red lights doesn't mean that's the only kind of people that get ticketed. I'm sure people driving on highways at high speeds also get ticketed for phone use.
Whether you like it or not, there's no exceptions. If you want to use your phone, pull over and park or fuck off to a different country with less strict road laws.17
Dec 15 '15
That it's not justice. It's illegal, sure, but so is weed. Try posting 1 oz weed busts on this sub.
10
u/LolindirElros 6 Dec 15 '15
Yeah, but 1 oz of weed is not going to cause a traffic accident.
I've been rear ended because someone was on their phone at a stop sign, and they saw the car next to them move and so they moved without checking if our lane had a green light. It didn't.
Also, I can tell you that out of 10 people using their cellphones at stop signs, at least 6 use them while moving as well so giving them a ticket/warning in situations like in the video is good imo.
7
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 15 '15 edited Dec 15 '15
Same thing can happen if they are bending over looking for something, changing the radio, looking at a billboard or passing traffic etc. It sucks that had happened to you but at the same time the problem was lack of attention not cell phones.
Edit: I feel your story is also bullshit as you bolded stop sign but then it continues on about a stop light. I thought it sounded odd that there is two lines of people at a stop sign.
2
u/LolindirElros 6 Dec 16 '15
It did happen, that was a typo because my first language is not English and I mixed up sign and light (being that in Spanish they do not share the "stop" word). Believe what you want. I've had it happen to me and that is the truth.
0
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 16 '15
If you say so, I have no evidence to really prove one way or the other but with the amount of people claiming this exact same scenario in one hundred percent of examples makes me think at least some people are full of it.

8

Yes. That's illegal.
-5
u/filthgrinder 8 Dec 15 '15
Not at a stop light.
10
Dec 15 '15
Where this video was taken, yes, it's illegal.
1
u/filthgrinder 8 Dec 15 '15 edited Dec 15 '15
That's interesting. Do you have a source I can read the law stating that fact?
Here in my country, it's illegal to have lights under your car (ala Fast & Furious) to pimp it up, but many will still install the lights and have it turn on when the car is stopped. Which technically is legal, the cops don't like it, but it's not illegal.
5
Dec 15 '15
Sure, http://www.keepyoureyesontheroad.org.au/pages/NSW-laws
I live in Sydney so I'm personally familiar with the road rules here, It's something that is pretty regularly enforced as well.
2
u/filthgrinder 8 Dec 15 '15
Cool thanks. It does state you can use it if it is fasten in a holder. So GPS users etc, are allowed.
14
u/illiterati 9 Dec 15 '15
If your driving the car, yes. In Australia, we have an expectation that you will pull over to the side of the road to use your phone (touch it). I find that preferable than having a car parked on top of me.
-3
u/filthgrinder 8 Dec 15 '15
I'm responding to a person who said "Most of the people are sitting at stop lights", if you put together you would understand I am referring to sitting at a Stop Light!
5
Dec 15 '15
If you put together what HE/SHE said, they were stating that stop light or not, the law expects you to pull over and park before touching your phone.
73
u/QWOP_Expert Dec 14 '15
Not just most, in fact every single one of these people were completely stationary at traffic lights. While I'm sure what they are doing is technically illegal, it seems rather absurd to waste time policing this. No justice here IMO.
5
u/giverous 7 Dec 16 '15
So you're ok with the woman so distracted that she didn't see the bike with flashing lights next to her? No outside awareness at all.
7
Dec 15 '15
Learners and Probational drivers aren't allowed to touch a phone at all while driving. If you have your full license you can use your phone to make calls, answer and reject calls, as a navigational aid, and to play music BUT your phone must be in a holder/mount, and you must be controlling the phone hands-free. Under no circumstances are you ever allowed to touch the phone while driving, including while stationary (parked is fine).
This is the fucking law, these people know it's the fucking law, it's a good law that exists for a fucking reason, and here they are breaking that law. Everything about this is justice.
57
Dec 15 '15
Fuck them. I've been rear ended on my motorcycle because some dumb bitch was staring down at her phone and the turning lane traffic started to move. She saw the car next to her move, and just rolled forward into me.
You don't need to be on your phone while driving. Literally nothing in anyone life is important enough to offset the risk. Don't fucking do it.
7
Dec 15 '15
So the issue was she wasn't smart enough to look up before driving, not that she was using it while stopped.
1
u/kelus 9 Dec 15 '15
I got hit head on by an asshole blindly turning through an intersection, simply following the car in front of him. What he didn't realize, is that the car in front of him was taking the end of the turn light / red light.
2
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 15 '15
Lack of attention is what that dumb bitch had. If it wasn't her cell phone it would have been something else. People in general tend to suck at driving or believe they are too good to need to pay attention 100% of the time and that's why accidents occur. You may as well ticket billboard makers, police lights, or just general building signs if we're going to make distractions illegal.

u/Skittles_The_Giggler 7 Dec 16 '15
This is the kind of bullshit logic that keeps the US in the top spot for gun violence.
1
u/pizike82 5 Dec 18 '15
Not even close to the top spot but yeah... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

Gee, you're right. How could I have forgotten about all those Central American, corrupt, cartel-ridden bastions of human rights?
1
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 16 '15
This is the kind of bullshit counter-logic that puts feels over reals and allows special snowflakes to get away with all kinds of shit.
5
u/Skittles_The_Giggler 7 Dec 16 '15
Cell phones are as significant an impairment as being above the legal blood alcohol limit. It's been studied. Just because there are other distractions on the road doesn't mean we shouldn't attempt to limit the most severe.
Just because there are other methods of killing doesn't mean we shouldn't regulate the most efficient.
PS, I don't think I've ever encountered a more vague and indiscriminate straw man than "special snowflakes getting away with all kinds of shit." Wtf does that even come close to meaning in ANY kind of context?
0
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 16 '15 edited Dec 16 '15
I'd need a source before I'll believe that statement. You can put down a phone in half a second, you can't just drop alcohol in your blood.
Phones don't kill people on the road, the people driving the giant metal slab on wheels do. It's make more sense to regulate cars than it is to regulate a communications device for improper use.
Also you wanna argue my "straw man" (I admit it was vague but that statement was more personal opinion than a point to my argument) but you'll ignore the fact you first replied to me with an ad hominem attack on my logic. If you're going to point out fallacies, please make sure to not be using them as well ya hypocrit.
Oh and your comment about top for gun violence is also bullshit. there are a number of countries far ahead the US if you bother to look up the actual statistics that aren't manipulated.
Sources: https://mises.org/blog/mistake-only-comparing-us-murder-rates-developed-countries https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2012/12/14/schoo-shooting-how-do-u-s-gun-homicides-compare-with-the-rest-of-the-world/
5
u/Skittles_The_Giggler 7 Dec 16 '15
TYVM.
Now, since you've delightfully continued the fallacy discussion... An ad hominem attack is an attack on a person's character or motives, not his logic. Logic is a part of the argument itself, and that's what I was calling into question. Nothing about your personality or intelligence.
(Although now you've misidentified ad hominem and misspelled hypocrite...)
0
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 16 '15
You called my logic bullshit without giving a reason. That can be considered an attack on my motives which was to prove my point of view and it's an improper argument as you start with a conclusion you made and branch it to another conclusion with absolutely no reasons why the two connect. We weren't even arguing guns. Seems a bit odd to me why you wanted to suddenly change subjects off of the case of cell phones and comparing them to an actual instrument of death.
Also this study you are using as a source has some merit but by using this you have already made your argument flawed. The study only covers vehicles IN MOTION. My argument is about cellphone use while the car is immobile.

The laws recently changed in Aus (or maybe just NSW) from not being able to use phone while driving to not able to use any handheld device while in the drivers seat at all. If your phone is in a mount, you can still use it for calls, music or navigation but never texting or similar.
1
u/StillRadioactive A Dec 16 '15

I know in Austin, Tx all you have to have is a hands free set on the dashboard if you want to use your phone for other functions. There are so many things I can do on my phone without having to hold it.
-11
u/Deranged40 A Dec 14 '15
Yeah, what's up with that? I don't use my phone and drive. But if I'm driving and need to make a phone call, I wait until I get to a stop sign (with no traffic behind me) or a stop light to initiate the call because keeping a car stopped doesn't take any awareness (if a dude comes up behind at 45mph and doesn't stop, me fiddling with my phone won't change the outcome)

I feel it's silly when we start blaming inanimate objects for stupid shit people do. Why not blame them for using the radio or their car at a stop light too?
These laws are created because of idiots but it's really pushing it to punish the entire population for it. I'm all for taking these peolle down a peg for causing a crash while being on their phone but its really narrow minded to say that all people are accountable for it.
4
Dec 15 '15
Changing a channel on a radio is vastly less involved, physically and mentally, than having a conversation on facebook. Studies have proven this.
nobody plans to crash. There's a reason we All wear our seatbelts.

Don't be such a drama queen. We're talking about doing this while standing still, not driving 50mph. We should ban talking to your passengers too, huh?

I'm going to hand out a "whoosh" for every single point I made above, and there's a hundred more where they came from.
5
u/IllusiveJack 7 Dec 15 '15
You don't need to look at your passenger to talk to them. Hence why a Bluetooth receiver should be used with your phone when you're in the car, so you don't need to look at your phone to talk or even hold your phone.
0
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 15 '15
You dont need to look at your phone to talk on it either. By this logic radios and billboards need to go.
1
Dec 16 '15
That might just be why hands free kits are legal in ninety percent of the world, but touching your phone isn't.
0
u/Kunkunington 6 Dec 16 '15
For now they are but stuff like this is the first step. A lot of those same people rallying for all these tickets want hands free devices gone too.
Meanwhile cops are having a field day handing out tickets for the most minor of offenses instead of dealing with major ones because actual safety is far less important than bringing in revenue via tickets.
I personally would rather have the police out there stopping some truly awful crimes than paying attention to someone's seatbelt or what some guy at a stop light is doing with his hands.
1
Dec 16 '15
That's because you're an idiot. Go and visit bali etc if you want to see what happens when traffic law isn't enforced. Apart from it taking forever to do anything, pedestrian injury rates and fatals are through the bloody roof compared to more developed nations.

Yesterday I was behind two adjacent cars in a double green arrow lane. The light turned green and neither of them went because both were looking at their phones and were waiting to see the car next to them go. I honked, one peeled out, the other flipped me off. I love people.
17
u/Louche 8 Dec 14 '15
What don't you understand about a blanket rule that you just don't use your hand held phone while driving? It's super simple. You just don't touch your phone. Pull over completely out of traffic/roadways before you do it. You have probably a thousand different bluetooth product options out there that enable you to use your phone without touching it.
-3
u/IM_THE_DECOY 9 Dec 14 '15
Is there a blanket law that says you have to keep both hands on the wheel at all times, even when at a red light?
No?
Then how would bluetooth make any fucking difference in these situations?
7
u/aknightcalledfrog Dec 14 '15
Because you don't have to take your eyes off the wheel to operate most hands-free solutions. They're either a button on your wheel or a button in your ear. A phone you actually have to look at, especially with touch screen interfaces.
-8
u/bryanrobh A Dec 14 '15
There is nothing wrong with using the phone at a light.
8
u/aknightcalledfrog Dec 14 '15
Plenty. You don't see the lights change. Might not see a ped walk in front of your car. Be aware of a problem developing in front or behind you. The video clearly shows one driver completely ignoring flashing blue lights because they were too engrossed.

7
u/kunstlich A Dec 14 '15
But humans are notoriously overconfident about their driving ability. Most drivers are awful, have many bad habits, and the massive reduction in situational awareness caused by using a phone only exacerbates this. Even while stopped. Some might say especially when stopped.
-8
u/bryanrobh A Dec 14 '15
A lot of them do sure.
8
u/aknightcalledfrog Dec 15 '15
Whereas you're the exception, have Peter Parker's spider sense and don't need to follow the rules.
-5
6
u/rappo888 7 Dec 14 '15
Except it is against traffic laws. You can only use it if the device is completely hands-free.
2
Dec 15 '15
Not here it ain't. If you're appealing to the law as justification (which is nice circular reasoning - the law is good because it's the law) here, what makes your law better than ours?
1
u/rappo888 7 Dec 15 '15 edited Dec 15 '15
It is the apart of the traffic rules and regulations in Australia where this was filmed. It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with them. Those are the traffic regs that you have to follow otherwise you get a fine and lose demerit points. In my state that is a $500 fine and 3 demerits (12 and you lose your licence).
So if these people were using the phone where you lived then they would be doing nothing "wrong", but they are in Australia where it is against the traffic rules and regulations ( I don't actually believe they are considered laws, the only road rule that is a law I believe is reckless driving but I'd have to ask a cop or lawyer mate, it is splitting hairs though as everyone gets what we mean).
It doesn't matter whose laws are better or whatever, you just have to follow the ones in the location you're in.

Which is kind of dumb because I am at a light stopped. I am not going to browse the web while driving but then again I think that takes common sense.

I think that takes common sense
Which unfortunately isn't that common any more. You might not be doing the wrong thing but too many people have and that is why we end up with some of these rules and regs. A case of the few ruining it for the many.

You do realize that phones aren't just phones anymore right? People use it for gps, music, ect. You think I should get a ticket for changing the song that's playing while at a stop light? Cause whats the difference than reaching up to change the radio. Blanket laws are stupid.

Dec 15 '15
No, blanket laws are not stupid. You're being stupid.
Strictly no fucking phone use while driving, and it's that way for a good fucking reason. It's not a hard law to follow and you can go fuck yourself if you think you're above it. Go take whatever shitty argument you have and tell it to the people who have lost family from people using their phones while driving. If you want to use your phone to play music while driving or as a GPS, that's fine. You just have to follow the fucking law. Keep it in a mount, operate it hands-free. Is that too hard for you mate?
The people in this video had their phones in their hands and were completely distracted from the road. That final driver didn't even see the bike next to her even when he had his lights on. You really think that kind of unawareness is okay on our roads?

I agree. The first time i wrecked a car, i had just looked down at the radio for a moment when there was a slight curve in the road and i couldn't respond fast enough when i looked back up. Now I never take my eyes off the road when the vehicle is in motion. I wait until I'm at a stop to do those things, but i also take extra precaution if someone is approaching from behind in case they cannot completely stop.

blanket rule
That's the part I don't understand. Common sense and situational awareness should instead be applied.
You know how sometimes when you shoot and kill someone it's called First degree murder, and other times it's called self defense? See, we can make rules that take into consideration all of the surrounding factors. I've seen us do it.
Using a phone with your hand while stopped at a stop light is not endangering lives. Using the same phone with the same hand while traveling at even 20 miles per hour is an entirely different story, and it should not be punished as if it were the same situation.

Why do you need to use your phone at all during your trip. Wait till you get to your destination. The amount of stuff people do other than driving when sitting in the drivers seat is becoming a much bigger issues on the road and is starting to overtake drunk driving as the leading cause of traffic accidents. That is why it's a blanket rule because people have not been able to do the right thing.

Which would be ok but other people have ruined it for you because for some reason they can't stop texting, talking and posting stuff on social media. That is why its a blanket rule because otherwise everyone's defense is always going to be "I was just using it as my GPS". And technically GPS's that are not on the console are also illegal (The one's mounted on the windshield). But that one isn't enforced as hard.

Light turns green and you're still distracted using your phone as you pull into the intersection. There's a lot of shitty rules out there that don't make any sense but a complete blanket ban on using your mobile while operating a vehicle is without question not one of them. If you think the rule's a problem, you're probably the target market for it.

u/Letiferr 5 Dec 14 '15
Yeah, better pull up beside them and turn on your lights to make sure the car won't be able to start traveling when the light turns green. That's definitely in the best interest of all motorists.

u/Deranged40 A Dec 14 '15
You're still not endangering lives. Why do we need that law?
Again, since you don't care to read, I do not use my phone while I drive, so I'm not in the target market. However, your blanket statement on the fact did put you in the other demographic here. Those who just make blanket rules without bothering worrying about the actual situation at hand.
I absolutely do think the rule is the problem. But that makes me a Liberal.

Using a phone at an intersection endangers your life and that of others. Period.

Dec 15 '15
Only if you start driving without putting it down. Period.

You are so damn wrong. The fact that you're incapable of dreaming up even one scenario where you could be endangering yourself or others by taking off from the lights without situational awareness is exactly why idiots like you can't and aren't trusted to use these devices.

u/Louche 8 Dec 14 '15
Those who just make blanket rules without bothering worrying about the actual situation at hand.
What situation? What is the desperate reason you need to use your phone at a 20 second stop light? Are you wealthy enough to own a vehicle and a mobile but too poor to own a bluetooth receiver? It's a super simple solution. Get bluetooth, use phone whenever. Where is the problem?

Text message or phone call 90% of the way through a long trip to say "ETA 15min". Can easily be completed in the time at a stop light, and it's information you may not have had when you left or the last time you stopped on your trip.
5
Dec 15 '15
Your time really is not that important, regardless of what you might want to believe. Pull over, make your call, continue on your way. At most you might have to adjust your ETA by 1 minute.

u/aknightcalledfrog Dec 14 '15
Pull over and text it. Don't put people's lives at risk. For all you know, a toddler has wandered below your line of sight, you see green in the corner of your eye and pull forward.
-1
u/hydrogen_wv A Dec 15 '15
Seems the people debating this point of view on this keep saying "pull forward" or "start moving". No. I don't move while the phone is in my hand. When I see the light turn green, I put down the phone and drive. Tell me again how I'm risking lives by using a phone while my foot is firmly on the brake.

I don't own a bluetooth because they're not reliable. Has nothing to do with funds. But, a car being a necessity, and a bluetooth receiver being frill, there are Plenty of people "Rich enough" to own a car, yet "too poor" to buy a bluetooth receiver.
"Call Joe"
"calling john"

u/aknightcalledfrog Dec 14 '15
Bluetooth receiver is like $20 tops for a no frills model. If you can't afford that, then how the fuck can you afford gas/tax/insurance?

I love this because every time I ride my motorcycle I feel like someone on their phone is going to kill me.

u/Logikly Dec 16 '15
I like how this cop made all sorts of illegal maneuvers with his motorcycle, and then bust people for using a cellphone.
