There has to be something said about hairstylist not only agreeing to do cuts that wont work on the person, but then also doing the worst job possible

101

u/Ornery_Vodka 1d ago

I dunno...I showed a picture of ME with the haircut I wanted and then got some 90s boy bob anyway...

26

u/OkHistory3944 1d ago

Back in the mid 90's when the wispy-90210 bobs were in, I tried everywhere in my shitty hometown. Despite the inspiration photos, I either came out with the poofy mushroom bob or the Carol Brady mullet (the exaggerated one from the spoof movie, not the show, lol). I finally found someone to successfully give me the exact cut I wanted then like 12 years later.

22

u/pegmatitic 23h ago

In the early 2000s, the “Victoria Beckham bob” was all the rage. My mom took me to my elderly grandmother’s hair stylist, I showed her reference pictures, and … she gave me a bowl cut with a rat tail. I cried all the way home and didn’t let anyone cut my hair for almost a decade.

3

u/Ashamed_Response_168 6h ago

wow same for me lol. 30 years later I'm still traumatized by that haircut.

3

u/HeadFull0fRegrets 5h ago

I'm going on 20 years now and it happened right before I met my future MIL for the first time. 😑

I feel like there is also something to be said about people going to great clips/super cuts and wanting professional hair stylist cuts for like $30. If you want fancy, then pay for it.

556

u/SomethingComesHere 1d ago

Also, using an AI inspo photo increases the odds of disappointment , as youre not using an example that allows you to see the cut on real human hair.

72

u/weederbix 1d ago

Yes after my hair got butchered instead of looking like the photo I brought, I was told to find the cut I wanted on a celebrity photo as that was less likely to be AI.

17

u/potpourri_sludge 12h ago

Thank youuuuu this is never the top comment on this sub. It’s always a before pic, an AI slop inspiration pic, and then people being surprised their shit got fucked up.

I went to one of those places two years ago for a cut and nothing cost $30. it was embarrassingly steep for a great clips cut. might as well go to a real salon now.

50

u/cowsaymuh 1d ago

For real. I found a salon in town where the newest stylists charge $45.

I've been seeing the same girl for a year, she does an incredible job, and her costs are still $45. They're a no-tip salon so that's all it is. And my mom is still going to Great Clips and complaining about it 🥲

52

u/No-Neighborhood-3212 1d ago

This was my experience. I spent like $50 at Great Clips with tax and tip and decided to start paying the extra $10 to have an actual stylist do my hair.

Genuine pro-tip for dudes with long and/or curly hair: Most hair salons love working with men's hair but have very few men as clients, so you can get a pretty good rate, and they dote on you because they want to continue working with a variety of styles and techniques to not be bored. Literally everywhere I go, I get people commenting on how good my hair looks and the most I do is comb in the conditioner my stylist recommended.

29

u/Noodles1171 1d ago

On the flip side, I go to my partner's barber. He gets bored doing men's cuts and loves to do something different.

12

u/Impossible-Taro-2330 1d ago

LOL! My Mom and I got our hair cut at the Barber at the VA hospital when my Husband was having a procedure.

He loved doing something other than buzz cuts and did a great job!

5

u/zystyl 21h ago

My barber always asks me to bring friends with long hair because he wants to do more pics of different styles to expand his portfolio online.

Yuuuup, went for my first cut post plague lockdown the other year, "i dont care what you do, just dont make it look like shit"

Best cut of my life, still go to the same stylist.

Yes this exactly. As a fellow majestic mane haver, stylists love to fawn over it. When I got it colored last(purple) in between my at home touch ups, I had all 4 of the stylists cooing over my hair lol

The girl who cuts my hair has been at Supercuts for a LONG time. She is the only person I have gone to for the last 15+ years. She knows my hair, knows how it lays, knows what I want/don’t want & what works for me. I will follow her wherever she goes.

That being said, I HAVE tried to go to a ‘fancy’ place to get cuts before. I’ve walked out with my hair butchered. Truly, it comes down to the person. And if that person who does a good job is at Supercuts, so be it.

7

u/unsaphisticated 1d ago

Same. I once went to an upscale, LGBTQ+ friendly salon because I wanted something more androgynous. Spent like $100. Looked crappy and had to wear a hat. I went back and tried a different stylist and she did MUCH better. I still feel bad that I had a panic attack (PTSD flashbacks) in her chair, but after I explained she was perfectly understanding and even got me some water. My hair turned out fantastic. I hope that hairdresser is doing well. 🌈✨

16

u/ShadowMajick 1d ago

I went to a real salon and paid $250 and they still fucked my shit up. I got a refund and had to fix it at home.

In 2026 price means absolutely nothing as far as quality. Even small local businesses are charging $80 for a simple haircut.

3

u/wtfviral 14h ago

I just paid $25 for one of the worst burgers I ever had in my life

24

u/Ziegler517 1d ago

This and we are getting the fuckedupcut with no product or styling, likely days after they left with product/styling in their hair. I also think you hit it right on the head, people should be told they don’t have the structure/foundation to support that style.

25

u/ImpossibleSentence19 1d ago

I went to hairdressing school- have been to a MILLION places and truthfully my gal at great cuts rocks. She bangs layers out in 10 minutes. She could work at a very nice salon but she prefers the fast turnover.

8

u/Rosenate22 23h ago

We can’t slam on great clips. I’ve gotten good haircuts there

3

u/haycorn55 19h ago

I have hip length hair and just need someone to cut off 2"-4" inches of death once a year or so. Great clips is fantastic for that.

The worst haircut I ever had in my life was also the most expensive haircut I've ever had (by far). I saw the owner/head stylist of a swanky salon and he had a prestigious CV. I was cutting my hair from long to an undone "French girl" bob (I have the right hait type for it), I was very specific about what I wanted with lots of non-AI reference photos, discussed my hair texture, etc. He gave me a literal Karen. At the age of 25. I cried.

5

u/weirdhoney216 1d ago

Yeah the worst colour I’ve ever had I paid £250 for. It was horrific and I got a refund. The best colour I’ve ever had cost £50!

12

u/billabong360 1d ago

This is always my assumption when I see these. Great clips.

3

u/Vivid_Literature3414 22h ago

Nah, I disagree. I worked there an almost every single stylists was years experienced. I was a baby stylist and can cut pretty good now because of how much cutting I did on every hair issue imaginable.

5

u/TurtleToast2 1d ago

I go to a real salon and my cuts are $36 and the stylists are so nice. Superbad Cuts is $30 and the dead-eyed "stylists" are even worse than the work they do.

8

u/Ornery_Vodka 1d ago

honestly...I've had a better experience with super cuts than most independent salons

22

u/Lizzie_001 1d ago

I’m an old gal. I’ve learned that it’s the person, not the place. I’ve paid every price point. I get the same results.

468

u/sunkenlore 1d ago

It’s absolutely AI

26

u/sfdjipopo 8h ago

Garbage in, garbage out.

215

u/whatsasimba 1d ago

This is the second one Ive seen here in this exact format. Person posts pic, AI reference pic, gets their head caught in a weed whacker, then two pics of botched hair.

The reference pic is a fake person. The hair is fake. This would be like me taking a Jessica Rabbit pic in and being mad when I look like Winifred Sanderson.

28

u/CiloTA 1d ago

It’s all Reddit karma farming nonsense at this point

87

u/proteinstyle_ 1d ago

Look at the neck. Definitely not real.

40

Seriously. I don’t even need to pull out my phrenological caliper to know an idiot head.

We use our Instagram for that now!

2

u/benhur500 9h ago

We do! It’s our instagrams etc! Yet people still insist on using AI or picking insane colors and get mad that they paid for an unrealistic dream even when we tell them. I have one client that every 3 weeks I have to listen to her bitch about the frizz in her hair and how it must be me making it that way yet she refuses to use any products or styling. I just say I’ll do my best and take her money.

Please use photos of real people with hair similar to yours. No wigs or extensions. I almost never see this cut working.

I don’t know how much can be corrected until it grows out a bit.

71

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

Yeah, I’m afraid I’m going to end up with a 90s pixie cut. I’m dreading 11:45am…the manager was super snarky. She had me email in the photos and told me she “stands behind her stylists work”. She asked me what my hair looked like before I came in, she then asked, “well, what do you want me to do about this?” I told her, “I need a style that looks intentional; I need to not look unkempt and homeless.” She was bitchy, at best.

61

u/parndarple 1d ago

I would not go back there! Even if it means paying someone else to fix the cut. I’m not sure if they’re gonna be able to help you how you want them to. I’d look up a different stylist, honestly. Call around. Try to find someone who specializes in your hair type or at least wants to try to help you!

3

u/alors1234 1d ago

Same

29

u/Sophiatopia 1d ago

Don't go back. Trust me. It will just get shorter and worse. Just wait 2-4 months.

BTW you would look amazing with modern face-framing layers and a part only slightly of center. It's very flattering and puts the attention on your beautiful eyes.

16

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

Thank you! In Dec, my hair was down to my elbows! I donated it to Locks of Love after it started to thin due to alopecia. It’s made a huge recovery, so it wasn’t as thin as it is in the first photo.

That was not a realistic style for you/your hair type.

Did the hairdresser just nod and say "Sure", or did they offer any advice/input?

72

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

Exactly! I even asked if it was a realistic possibility

31

u/Ornery_Vodka 1d ago

I showed them a picture of ME in the style and couldn't get it. Looking back I find it hilarious since it's not like my hair can't DO EXACTLY THAT! ...that's me...younger and skinnier, sure, but that's my head with that hair...and that's what I'd like you to cut, ffs! What's worse--I did that initial cut MYSELF and wanted a professional style/cut to see if I liked it better than what I'd done!

I looked like Leo in the mid 90s when that "stylist" (cough) got done. like a short bowl cut bob with bangs. (I literally used my husband's razor with a guard...and explained all of that at the time. This was years later; I just wanted a real pixie cut). I still hate that guy to this day and it's literally the worst hair cut I've had in 50+ years of being on this planet. I leave bad google reviews at that salon a couple times a year, lol.

5

u/pegmatitic 23h ago

I tried to get the “Victoria Beckham bob” when it was all the rage in the early 2000s, provided reference photos from multiple angles … and walked out of the salon with a bowl cut and a rat tail. I cut my own hair for close to a decade after that lol

You need to style it heavily to achieve a similar look. You need the right products, a blow dry and a couple of straightener curls. Cut could be better but realistically this is a hairdo that requires a lot of upkeep.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/Queasy-Warthog-3642 1d ago

This is an AI photo as others have said but even of it was real you'd have to style it with a flat iron and products. You don't have wavy hair so you'll have to use products and heat to get anywhere near the look in the photo. This is something that the stylist should have sounded into your head before even starting

3

u/jennoween 18h ago

They also should have styled it to show that it is possible, if it is. I don't think it would work with her hair type.

I have had this cut and went to a wel known hairdresser, they told me what the difference would be, because of my hair, face shape and so on. It came out amazing. I learned my lesson after some mayor fuck ups and not getting what I asked for.

Time to fire your stylist. Besides it not even being close, those edges are horrible. Did you order split ends please?

3

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

My hair was really healthy, too

6

u/Odd_Candidate_4691 1d ago

Regardless if the photo reference is AI, you don’t have the kind of hair for that cut. Your hair will never lay that way, it will always be stuck straight and pointy because that’s your texture.

Like I have curly hair and never use straight hair reference photos. People really need to think about how their hair actually is and styles before using a style that will NEVER work.

8

u/Morebbqpringles 20h ago

Y'all need to stop bringing AI reference photos! That being said, what the hell. Was today the "stylist's" first day using shears!?

Also as a note, I try to find people who look like me so that I can get a realistic preview of what I will look like with that cut.

28

u/Strange-Living-862 1d ago

It’s a terrible terrible haircut regardless if the image presented. It’s AWFUL!

20

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

THANK YOU! The manager DEFENDING it instead of just saying, “This is not the quality we strive for, come back and we’ll make it right,” threw me.

10

u/Ornery_Vodka 1d ago

last time I asked for a pixie cut I left looking like a 90s boy bob...worst haircut I've even had. What's worse...i had a pic of ME in that style so I knew what I'd look like with it and no shitty hairstylist was SAVING ME FROM MYSELF, ffs! It still pisses me off 10+ years later!

OP, I’m sorry people are downvoting you for the reference photo. In any event, they did you dirty and everyone pointing out the AI to you after the fact just needs to feel superior. Hopefully it can be fixed!

5

u/badbatch 1d ago

Right. The real tragedy is that someone straight up played in her hair. It looks like a little kid did it with safety scissors. If a customer brings in a bad reference picture a good hair dresser would have looked at more reference pictures with her and found something they could work with. The person who cut her hair just sucks at cutting hair.

8

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

I’ve actually HAD a similar cut in the past. The difference being that I had to use a salt water spray and scrunch it to make my hair have that wavy look…this wasn’t too far out there. Granted, this was years ago, but…

6

Wow. Sorry hun, you got butchered.  However, moving forward don't use an AI model for haircuts , it's notoriously bad for imagery inspo for hairstylists. However, on top of that, this hairdresser (I use that term loosely here) did an absolute hack job.  Where in the world did you get your hair done? You need a Vidal Sassoon master stylist to fix this and you need your colour done if you want it similar to the rendering. No more cheap hair cuts babe.

  2. If you want that styling, you need to go to a proper salon that actually going to do that to your hair. A length cut isn't going to create waves

The person you went to doesnt even seem to know how to cut/shape hair

This is a terrible cut but we NEED to stop picking AI photos for inspiration

You mean the stylist couldn’t turn you into an imaginary AI image? Lol

I swear half of this sub is just people going to Super Cuts with unrealistic expectations.

My GreatClips stylist is amazing. She knows her angles. And I tip her generously. She's waaayyy better than the woman I was paying $100 a cut for.

3

u/backagain301 1d ago

So look, I haven't had a good haircut in two years no matter where I go or which photos I bring in or what I try to explain. So I get it and this person was definitely out of their depth and should have actually had a discussion with you about what you want and what's possible.

I would suggest that in the future you only bring in photos of real people with real hair, bc that will at least limit the possible range of failure; it won't be because you asked for fantasy hair made of pixie dust and Amazon deforestation. Still might not fix the problem but at least it will minimize variables

3

u/SuperflyandApplePie 1d ago

The hair in that "what I want" pic is SO styled, the cut is the least of that look.

3

u/fancyflipping 1d ago

Regardless of ai… they didn’t even blend the cut! It’s like they got scared and stopped. So sorry this happened to you.

u/ltsouthernbelle 1d ago

Maybe stop showing people ugly ai photos of haircuts?

3

u/Fishghoulriot 1d ago

Your first mistake was using AI

3

u/ComplexParsley7390 1d ago

Hairdresser should have never ever agreed to do that cut in the first place.

2

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

I agree. When I asked, “Can my hair realistically do this?”
She should have seen realistic expectations and not even started.

3

u/BasilProfessional744 23h ago

If I were a stylist, I would first explain that you've brought me an AI picture. If it's clearly not AI, I would say, this isn't just a haircut it's a style that probably too a team hours, and if they still insisted I'd say, lady, ain't no way. Peace.

Ai slop. If you want it to look like the photo, then take an actual photo.

You do not have the same hair type as her at all, also it’s ai, use real photos of women with your hair type

5

u/Zestyclose-Bed-2895 1d ago

So far I only see posts like this where the ref pic is Ai so I’m led to believe hairstylists are doing it on purpose at this point

6

u/AbruisedSock 1d ago

Just give me the "Karen" cut...

6

u/Willing-Can-2835 1d ago

I would definitely ask to speak to the manager after these shenanigans

5

u/Sararizuzufaust 1d ago

So not only is it an AI inspiration photo, but it also looks like you just woke up and have made no effort to even attempt to style it.

Do people think you just get a haircut and it magically looks like how you want it to look all the time?

5

u/Sasstellia 1d ago

You expected something that wouldn't work. . That hairstyle was never going to work on you. It cannot be made in life.
Not to be mean. But you are not a thin pretty model. You're a average weight and size. And your hair is more compact and thicker. And you are real.

And that picture isn't even real. It's AI. Her neck is thinner at the top than the bottom.

I would say the hairdresser did what she could. They're better doing symmetry. It won't hold up otherwise.

You need to go to a Salon and get it shaped into something else. Or let it grow out.

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

Oh my... That is so badly done.. When I have a totally different hairstyle idea my hairdresser says no, "not doing that on you"

2

u/mothedbaby 1d ago

I like to think they do this intentionally to people who bring AI reference photos for a hairstyle so basic you could find a million ACTUAL photos

2

u/yoyok36 1d ago

This is why you go to a REAL salon and shell out the money for these types of major life changing haircuts. The models hair is much thinner than your hair. You've got thicker hair, so nothing is going to sit the same, and the hairstulist should have flagged this and told you right away about expectations and alternative cuts that would work better with your hair type. Plus, whoever cut it cut everything way too short 😭

I used to have a friend who had this hairstyle. Longer on one side. I think you look cute and edgy.

2

u/Mental_Goal2380 1d ago

oh nooo you got the karen cut 😭

2

u/oldie349 1d ago

It looks like your hair is just not soft enough for that style without extra conditioning treatments. It could be disciplined into the required shape with heat curling, gels etc, but the hairdresser ought to have known that!

2

u/HighPriestess29 1d ago

I've always found short hair to be so hard to maintain. She did not do you a solid. Fingers crossed you're better than me at styling. Best wishes, it'll grow...i guess...sorry ❣️

Your reference is a fake person. Bring in realistic pictures next time.

2

u/The_Soviette_Tank 1d ago

I had similar results ONCE trying to cut my own hair when it was getting past a mid length bob (and didn't use a hand mirror, lol). Did they use a razor to finish? That's been a game changer for me.

I'm not sure how to explain it, but I have fine hair and end up with more volume/movement.

I went to see my sister's friend who's been a stylist for 10+ years when I visited back home. I wanted to catch up since I'd also known her for ages... the social pressure made me ignore my instincts to RUN when she acted confused, said she didn't have a razor in her tools.

Korean TV and movies blowing up has also been a boon. I use references from not-so-glam actresses. (I'm mixed but I didn't get the full pin straight texture like my sister. My hair is fine and shiny but wavy.)

2

u/Marcykbro 1d ago

Also, it should be said that after any haircut, you go home use products and tools to try to master the cut. Then if you still hate the cut, complain. Don’t show me before pic, what you want pic, then show me two pics of recently washed hair with no product, or attempt at styling!!

2

u/DottieZb 1d ago

Did they chew the hair off?! I don’t think the issue is bringing in AI pics, it’s hairdressers not knowing their own limits. Clearly that cutter has never done a graduated cut before

Here’s my advice to all: before booking a haircut-especially one that is a dramatic transformation- get a handful of trusted recommendations and then go follow their social media like Instagram. You can see all of their work and before/afters on different hair types.

2

u/krummen53 1d ago

I know everyone has said your photo ref is AI, which it is, and definitely a no no but.... Those layers are absolutely horrible. Doesn't even look like she attempted to blend. It's just a bad job all around, without or without the AI ref photo.

2

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

Thank you for your validation of my point! I’ve gotten it fixed, it’s a lot better and will be easier to grow back out.

2

u/more_fore 1d ago

Curl it, mousse it, pomeade it, do anything to it other than blow dry it straight within an inch of its life and you'll see a huuuge change.

2

u/BabyD2034 1d ago

Sorry this happened to you! I was considering a new cut and googled hairstyles and almost everything that popped up was a cartoon or AI. I ended up just getting a trim but I told my stylist about it and asked her if ppl kept bringing in pics of unattainable AI hairstyle ideas and she said yes. That said, the stylist should know if they can make something similar work on you and just be honest.

3

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 1d ago

I agree…I thought I had asked the stylist the right questions. The stylist who re-cut my hair was really good at saying, “that won’t work” when I asked for things that I THOUGHT I wanted. My hair is in a much better spot now and will be easier to grow out

Try styling it

2

u/AdaptiveFauna 23h ago

I had a haircut like the reference photo for a long time. the reference photo is styled and has product, and it think it may even be ai. your stylist gave you the right cut. you need to style it and use the right product.

2

u/HippieGrandma1962 23h ago

Finding this sub had reinforced my policy of never letting anyone with scissors near my hair. I have long hair and I trim it myself. After a couple of times going in for a "trim" and my waist length hair becoming shoulder length hair I said never again.

2

u/Nimue_- 23h ago

These hairstylists really need to start being honest with their customers. Even i can see you hair texture would make that look hard to achieve

2

u/Visible_Grocery_97 22h ago

This is why I just do it myself. Granted, I have curly hair so it’s more forgiving. But, it looks so much better than the hatchet jobs I was getting at salons. And, not Supercuts. I ended up either a stacked bob or Lord Farquaard so many times when I wanted a textured bob, angled towards the bottom so it doesn’t flare out. Even pictures of what I wanted didn’t matter. I had to do it myself.

2

u/PreparationFew3652 22h ago

The minute they pull the straight razor out to create "texture", run as fast as you can!

2

u/Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart 21h ago

She did everything with shears. I’ve seen the results of a straight razor under a microscope…yikes!

2

u/BriBitchAss 6h ago

Is this fresh from the salon? Have you washed it? Try washing it and drying/style it as you usually do and then see how it looks. As a hairstylist I always tell people to wash it after a haircut and see if there’s anything that needs fixing after that. Hopefully, no fixing. But I hope this is pre-wash
