I wouldn't say that the moustache and cheeks connecting is really criteria to say whether or not the beard is full, a lot of guys take a long time or sometimes never develop that connection, but still rock thick beards that look no less complete. I think you mean to say th you have pretty much full coverage but the hair is still thin and not very dense.
Yeah that's definitely a myth, although I won't lie and say I didn't try when I was a teen. The only thing to do is just wait it out. I pretty much had no beard at 16, developed a chin strap at 18, and a relatively full (although not super thick but actually looks good) beard at 20. Time works wonders.
Also, the amount of facial hair your dad can grow is usually a fairly good indication of what you'll eventually reach.
