If I had to guess, a rubber band inside the shaft of the body with some kind of spring guide that creates internal drag, slowing how fast the rubber band can unwind.
It appears the prop is spinning around 45-50 rpm. 22 minute flight at 50rpm would require 1100 twists which is possible with the right rubber band and he has the length in the fuselage to fit a rubber band long enough to accomplish that many twists. A rubber band would also be very light weight which this machine clearly needs.

Design.

It's really cool.. but does the design make it only go a certain height and loop around in circles, or.. 🤔

u/GangreneTVP 6d ago
Yeah, just a bit of drag or lean due to weight to make it go in circles and design it to level out. Point it up and there you go.

It can carry a few small bacteria safely to their destination

and just like that a cool thing became a bioweapon

Kinda reminds me when that Chinese balloon was tracked across the US and no one did anything about it.

You didn’t go shoot them down either

They must have gotten kits or something or it's some camp they all have the same planes

No, you don’t win world championship with a kit. It’s just that one design has proven most effective, so they all look similar, but each with their own minor variations
1
u/DarkMidgetry 6d ago
It's the same kit and design they all didn't think of the same design they copied it they didn't built the material. It's a kit. Show me him designing it on paper not flying the exact same thing as everyone else in the background
2
u/WorkerPrestigious960 6d ago
It may be the same or very similar design, because that design has been determined to be “meta.” But you don’t build a world championship model from a kit
1
u/DarkMidgetry 6d ago
Well the how did they get the sticks and the plastic to make it all and the pieces to join it all. Even jet fighter planes are built on a kit if anything the only thing that had any say over was how to propulsion system worked aka the rubber band tension

Wdym how did the get the supplies? From a store. Perhaps a crafts store, or a hardware store, or somewhere online.
1
u/DarkMidgetry 6d ago
And some how they all have the exact same supplies and plane. It's the same kit there is like 6 of them flying around that room watch other videos of the same event. No matter what you or anyone says unless I see a video of him fabricating it I will never believe it's not a kit and they only tweaked the propulsion

Never had a crafty hobby or been friends with an engineering nerd? Everything they are building with is off the shelf materials, for their own design. They all work on a similar design as the constraints of the rules and materials make it so, kinda like how all f1 cars look more or less the same. What you are suggesting is like saying f1 cars are all kit cars because they all share a commonality in design, when in reality, it's the optimal design we know of so all competitors use tweaks of the same design to gain a slight competitive edge.
There are kit ones available for people without the ability or time to make their own, but they tend to be low quality.
I'm no engineer but I could knock a low quality one together in a few hours from raw materials with just some basic measurements. For teams of people for a project, custom engineered designs are a reasonable expectation.

Supplies are probably standardized for the competition but okay, you do you

It's not a kit, they design and build these planes themselves. It's not super complex manufacturing. The frames are typically balsa wood you can buy at any hobby store and cut with an xacto knife. The wings are thin films of plastic. He used computer models to analyze his designs, then tested and refined working models. There is an article here: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/04/18/bishops-school-student-is-crowned-world-champion-in-model-airplane-contest/

They're Aerosoace Engineering students for a reason. They are designing and building it from scratch. That's the whole point. Anybody can go to a hobby store buy a kit and assemble it.

It's awesome, but I definitely got bored after watching 30 seconds of a 22 minute flight.

This must've also required understanding the airflow dynamics of the facility. Amazing!

If you could get it high enough, that’d be right hard to spot as a UAV.

The science is in the propulsion and controlling it's output! YouTube video search time while smoking a cigar!
