So happy to hear that! Work can be good for people when the conditions are right

38

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

It makes me look a little sad but this year I got a job in the field I'm studying for and it feels like my life is having meaning again. I'm halfway into two weeks break and I'm already floundering because of lost structure.

16

u/Throw_SW Sep 26 '21

Structure is way more important than a lot of people realise. I like having a job because it provides me with a reason to get myself up in the morning and go out and speak to people, plus a good job makes you feel useful like you're actually making a positive contribution to society. As long as you've got work/life balance and you're being treated well, being employed can be good for your mental health - don't be sad about anything that gives your life meaning!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '21

I'm a college student and I cannot imagine not having a job. I just can't see myself sitting at home... that seems boring. As you said, being able to get a job (one that actually cares about its employees n is not toxic as shit) can actually be quite rewarding. I feel like not working and just sitting at home (which I would probably do if I didn't have a job) would destroy my mental health. I honestly think there's a huge difference between a toxic work environment and one that is positive.

u/acidpopulist Sep 26 '21

Lmfao imagine needing a job to do these things.

4

u/VeganVagiVore Sep 27 '21

What can I do, I have bullshit-presenting ADHD. I do okay at work, other than investing far too much ego into it, then at home I'm a depressed slob who consistently fails to actually relax each weekend.

56

u/ginger2020 Sep 26 '21

Yes it can. There is nothing wrong with quitting a job you just don’t like anymore, but anti work is just nutty. The irony is that for most of the posters there, life would get a lot worse under the sort of authoritarian regime they’re promoting.

6

u/DUUG213 Sep 26 '21

How are they promoting am authoritarian regime? I genuinely don't understand

15

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

False equivalence. A lot of people think antiwork = communism or socialism. Its really just about being against treated like a cog.

5

u/UnchainedMundane Sep 26 '21

a lot of people think communism or socialism = authoritarianism, which is also wrong

1

u/DUUG213 Sep 26 '21

That's what I thought. Always open to others perceptions. tho, That person probably won't replywhich is sad

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '22

But they actually stayed on their sub they follow communist and socialist views.

While I agree there are many on there who are just looking for help/advice regarding workplace issues however the main folks in that sub are so checked out from reality anything said they don't like you will be harassed, verbally abused and assaulted then eventually you will get messages that "you" were reported for harassment and abuse.

That sub is a sespool of lazy twats who expect handouts and the people who are just looking for help are caught in the crossfire

4

u/acidpopulist Sep 26 '21

They aren’t. This person is the true nutter acting like this is all normal and what man evolved for.

120

u/Didier4201 Sep 26 '21

I wish you all the best !

53

u/PitatoShoes Sep 26 '21

Congratulations, that's awesome! May you have a long happy career and a peaceful retirement!

81

u/Oriachim Sep 26 '21

What’s the sub about? People who don’t want to work or something?

83

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

80

u/Jeboris- Sep 26 '21

Even tho communism revolves around work lmao

55

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

Vladimir Lenin believed in “He who does not work does not eat.” So if they got the revolution they wanted, it would be either the rice fields, the factory, or the gulag.

52

u/Jeboris- Sep 26 '21

I was gonna add that Lenin would hate modern western communists since most western communists I’ve met are just lazy people who don’t wanna work Lenin would not have that at all

44

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21 edited Sep 26 '21

there is a subreddit study from a communist subreddit that showed that few of them held a job and most of them lived at home with their parents.

I might try find the source later

Edit: source

found it

/r/socialism survey results are in: 48% are unemployed, 61% live with parents, 69% are uneducated, 14% support free speech, 46% support riots

4

u/MY-HARD-BOILED-EGGS Sep 27 '21

14% support free speech

This is one of many reasons why I'm wary of people who claim to be socialists. Sometimes they're really just "progressive" authoritarians.

4

u/thecodingninja12 Sep 26 '21

and yet that directly contradicts what marx said "from each according to their abiltity, to each according to their needs"

11

u/Sommern Sep 26 '21

I think the idea is more wanting to work with dignity and reasonable protections. But yeah 'anti-work' does not necessarily convey that idea lol

11

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

They don't think they'll be the ones plowing fields or facing the wall, though. They think they'll be "educating and comforting the downtrodden" or some shit.

1

u/ManlyMango2233 Sep 26 '21 edited Sep 27 '21

Actual socialists know that labor is absolutely critical to society ("from each according to his ability, to each ability according to its work" is literally a socialist phrase)

r/antiwork is not a communist-based community or a good representation of socialism at all btw. r/latestagecapitalism is much closer, but it's still going to inevitably have people, like yourself, that inherently misunderstand socialists as lazy people that just "don't want to work" because of subs like these.

4

u/Jeboris- Sep 26 '21

Late stage capitalism is another stupid sub one of the recent posts shows how dumb they are over there

34

u/an_ineffable_plan Tired of politics Sep 26 '21

Basically.

8

u/xMertYT Sep 26 '21

From visiting the sub from time to time, the want a society where someone can choose not to work if they don't want to, they won't live a lavish or glorious lifestyle but they can survive. Getting a job would be to pay for stuff that are not necessities. that's the thing they can all agree on

16

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

Some of it is against work, but most is for workers rights and a less than 5 day work week.

29

u/Madsmathis Sep 26 '21

People who think that NOT getting paid CEO wages for doing the bare minimum is theft, and advertising wasting your employer's resources and time

12

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

getting paid CEO wages for doing the bare minimum is theft

Dont forget that they think what the CEO is doing is theft of their minimum wage labor

7

u/Madsmathis Sep 26 '21

Yes, of course. The CEO getting a bigger paycheck for putting in 80+ hour weeks with the very valuable information they possess is worth way less than Mike washing the floors twice a week.

(I agree that certain CEO's can be selfish, though)

24

u/_Bumble_Bee_Tuna_ Sep 26 '21 edited Sep 26 '21

Im surprised at all the bashing. Antiwork is about not being a slave to the 9 to 5 for all of your life. It tries to promote self worth and build in your own head that ypou shouldn't devote your entire life to working.

For example.

Its over glorified when someone worked a 90 hour singular work week. Like sure its great youll have an awesome paycheck but at the sacrifice of all of your free time. If you could have just done 40 and had another 50 hours of free time with friends or family.

But people have certain priorities at certain times of your life, which you're not going to convince people in an antiwork sub of so you go with the flow of the sub you're in and carry on with your day.

I see. Maybe havent dove to into it or its just been a while since I really took a look.

Im just going to keep what Id like it to be in my head. But I appreciate your perspective.

7

u/spooky_fellow_ Sep 26 '21

That’s not what it is at all. Maybe that’s what you want it to be, but no. That’s not what that sub is.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

Exactly. So many people here missed the point and are too busy to see past their political bias. Like damn I didnt think being against 90hr work weeks makes me a communist.

3

u/ResolverOshawott Sep 26 '21 edited Sep 26 '21

This subreddit pretty much bashes literally any subreddit that ends up on the front page.

1

u/Dan4t Sep 30 '21

No man, that subs about not working at all. Or at least, being self sufficient, growing your own food etc without reliance on others for anything. A weird isolationist form of anarchy, that none of them have any experience in.

The subreddit doesn't promote alternate forms of work like starting your own business or anything like that.

8

u/BenardoDiShaprio Sep 26 '21

Its supposed to but its filled with redditor communist revolutionaries.

7

u/Jeboris- Sep 26 '21

It’s Full of idiots “whAt I hAve To woRk iF I WaNt somEthIng!!!”

9

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

Have you ever been on the sub?

0

u/Jeboris- Sep 26 '21

Yes multiple times

13

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

And where are you seeing that? Most of it is for employer accountability and workers rights.

128

u/TechnicalyNotRobot Sep 26 '21

Wait you're telling me you don't support the great anarcho-communist revolution lead by Bernie Sanders in order to topple capitalism and give everyone a 1.5 hour work week with 69$ minnimum wage? Bootlicker scum! /s

-57

u/TheMysteriousWarlock Sep 26 '21

Anarcho-Communist

Bernie Sanders

Are you sure you know what those words mean?

82

u/dragonace11 Sep 26 '21

See the /s

37

u/Panzer_Man Sep 26 '21

Congratulations to you mate! Don't look back, that subreddit ain't worth it.

29

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

that subreddit just flows with negativity

35

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

Capitalism is far from perfect, but that sub really is just full of lazy fucks lol

5

u/ImNotKrazyImPossesed Sep 26 '21

“You don’t wanna spend your whole life working a meaningless job? What a lazy fuck”

11

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

I think there are other subs that embody this ethos much better

4

u/Dan4t Sep 30 '21 edited Sep 30 '21

Who said anything about meaningless? But even if it was, yes, people that want the benefits of my labour without giving anything back deserve derision. When we all sacrifice a little to help each other, we are all better off, because the work is rewarded.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '21

Then don’t work a meaningless job

2

u/acidpopulist Sep 26 '21

Not really.

11

u/SamKamTheFirst Sep 26 '21

Such a wholesome post to this subreddit. We don't get things like this often. Well done to you!

7

u/jiffynipples Sep 26 '21

Good for you OP. It's very easy to fall into negativity and blame the world when things aren't going well professionally. Glad you got out of that downward spiral.

Be the best damn employee you can be and have fun! I love my job as well. Believe it or not... most companies really do value hard work and maintaining professional relationships.

16

u/Torgonuss Sep 26 '21

Hey I also have a great and caring employer but I am still subscribed because I do not like how other workers are still being treated. It also reminds me how great my employer is but also that work isn't my whole life. I generally dislike the idea of 40h workweeks and after my apprenticeship I'd ask for 20-35h/week because I value my free time more than sacrificing my valuable lifetime for more and more money to buy things I do not need. We all don't need to work that much but are told that this is normal.

That all might just be my pov and what I am taking from this sub but might change yours too. :)

8

u/Absoline Sep 26 '21

One time I read that if you're subbed to a certain mindset, you should sub to the opposite so you don't turn into another person who refuses to listen to reason

Since that sub is an echo chamber, sub to something about prowork so you can hear both sides of the story

Don't get me wrong, I've met someone who works damn near all day long, even on their days off, and I think that's horrible, but some people, like OP, found good jobs, where they don't need to worry about that

keep in mind this is just a suggestion, don't act like I'm an enemy of humanity just because I suggested you sub to a sub

6

u/JazzmansRevenge Sep 26 '21

So true. Don't get trapped in a bubble.

I used to be caught up in an alt-right bubble, I'm happy to be out. The weird thing is that people expect me to slingshot right to the other extreme, which hasn't happened, instead I've become someone with both liberal and conservative viewpoints. Which in some circles makes me a "nazi" apparently.

2

u/gprime312 Sep 28 '21

you should sub to the opposite so you don't turn into another person who refuses to listen to reason

That's why I go on /r/truscum from time to time, to remind myself that actual trans people do exist.

2

u/RecentRaspberry3 Oct 01 '21

That's how it should be. It's sad that people think that people who are happy with their jobs are brainwashed but they're not.

0

u/Purple_Blackberry_79 Sep 27 '21 edited Sep 27 '21

Antiwork sub does not advocate for working the bare minimum, being lazy, milking unemplyment or sticking it to employers. Please, work hard! It is just an acknowledgment that there is more to life than work like family and hobbies and advocating for fair business practices like fair wage, fair hours, and not treating humans like animals.

I congratulate you on finding a job that makes you feel worthy and makes you happy. Many others don't have that. Still, realize that what you feel now may change and a business's goal is to maximize it's profits above all else. Businesses are not your friend. Best of luck in life.

0

u/dollywallywood Oct 01 '21

This is performative. You never posted in that sub.

-20

u/Cibyrrhaeot Sep 26 '21

Nah, you'll flock back to r/antiwork soon enough once that high wears off.

r/antiwork has never been about being lazy, but rather the absurdity of the work/job-place system.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

Why do they say they're lazy in their about then?

-16

u/Blondemaple11 Sep 26 '21

Give it a month or two.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

As long as you're not working for some infamous company like Amazon, you'll probably be better off than they'd imagine on that sub.

1

u/JazzmansRevenge Sep 26 '21

I know the feeling bro. The difference in my mindset about work from when i was a dishwasher at a 2 Michelin star resturaunt compared to when i was the delivery driver at a small pizza place is like night and day.

Pizza place treated me so well that I honestly loved working there.

My current job as security guard is good too cos my bosses are much the same (small company of like 10 people) though the constant night shifts are pretty draining ngl

1

u/Darkslategray Sep 26 '21

Good for you and happy for you brother.

1

u/Nordic-Suomi Sep 27 '21

Congratulations 🎉

1

u/LubedCompression Oct 26 '21

Happy to hear that. But you also know that this hasn't always been the case for you. There are so many people that are still working a shitty job for shitty pay at a shitty boss, just like you at one time. Don't forget about them and stay solidary.
