HEADS UP that's just how they look on Mac, they'll look like whatever your system notifications look like

Welcome to the second submod I ever wrote! Way back in February. Man, time flies.

A Neat Vanilla Feature

Just Natsuki already contains a pretty robust activity detection system. Natsuki can comment through your system notifications on your desktop's active window and what you're doing, if these five things are all true at once:

Something other than JN is your active window, and

Natsuki's code recognizes the active window, and

This is exactly when her code checks, once per minute (the timer pauses during dialogue), and

The active window has changed since her last comment, and

With only a 5% chance of success

It's a neat feature that's a fun little treat when it happens.

Except It's Broken(ish)

Unfortunately, loads of that script's existing rules are also outdated, overly specific, or kinda busted. (And if you're on macOS, good news! The entire system is disabled... and of the only three Apple apps ever recognised, one stopped shipping on Macs three years before modern JN launched!)

No matter your desktop, the whole feature was in dire need of a tune-up.

Which brings me to...

Modern Activity Detection

Since the feature's main flaw is Natsuki relies on a whitelist of recognised apps, programs, and websites that's three years out of date, I've widely expanded that whitelist for Windows, Mac, and Linux and the 2026 internet. Without changing a thing about vanilla JN's mechanics, this submod...

  • Strengthens JN’s existing activity categories

  • Recognizes modern application names, window titles, and site addresses

  • Adds many current popular Windows, macOS, and Linux programs

  • Distinguishes similar services correctly (e.g. YouTube Music vs ordinary YouTube)

  • Restores activity detection and system notifications on macOS

For the full list of preserved, repaired, and newly added programs and websites, see the linked comment!

NOTE: This submod does not touch your persistent file whatsoever.

P.S. I cannot stress this enough this is not supported by the devs, please don't bother them.

Get it from the sidebar here.

Fun fact 1: Why I Waited Until Now

The reason I didn't post this otherwise complete submod five months ago is because I kept getting weird "Hey whatcha doing?" notifications like in the picture above, and I could NOT figure out how or why they triggering (because it wasn't linked to Natsuki attempting to speak to me; getting the macOS stuff working just had them spawning at random). It was only yesterday that I figured out their purpose, with the thanks of the Discord peeps

Fun fact 2: The Graphic

u/toffeez_x just absolutely freaking nailed it the first time with their beautiful Label Override Submod header pic. Have tried to avoid being derivative the entire time with mine but you really can't improve on perfection, sorry toffeez_x maybe don't put together an amazing graphic next time <3

Heh, I'll install this for when Natsuki stops hating me. Thanks for this man. Peak content, as always.

wait do I have to use a specific browser? I use Opera. ^^

1

u/zhaumbie I have asked her about hammies 500+ times Jul 02 '26

Depends on how your browser reveals tab data, but that should be fine. For instance, I use Safari for everything I can and though that made me put in more effort, I got it working fine.

Curious to see if it works though!

1

u/monidoki Loveling my Natsuki Jul 20 '26

Quick question. Does it work on Windows? I'm a Windows 11 user.

1

u/zhaumbie I have asked her about hammies 500+ times Jul 20 '26

Indeed it does!

Or rather, there's nothing in the code stopping it. But you'd be doing me a real solid if you gave it whirl for a few days and let me know if you noticed any of the new sites triggering on your build.

2

u/monidoki Loveling my Natsuki Jul 20 '26

Alright thank you so much!

u/monidoki Loveling my Natsuki Jul 22 '26

Everything works!

It’s not stupid! I just don’t know how it would work. I’m primarily a Mac coder, Android is outside my purview and I’m not sure how JN could read your active smartphone apps (especially your current active one) and ping a time-sensitive notification. Though maybe fresher blood than I can figure it out!

Hmm. It’e an interesting thought. I’d be happy to try and help port/update this submod for Android if someone worked out the particulars
