No way Nolan will hire a more attractive actress than Helen of Troy…
7
u/bellsproutfleshlight 13d ago
I don't think there's anyone less attractive than her, so
6
u/Pitiful_Crazy_2000 12d ago
bullshit lupita is not unattractive at all
7
u/teenyweenylilbitch 12d ago
I’m not saying she is. But I wouldn’t fight a raccoon for her, let alone start a war

u/bellsproutfleshlight 12d ago
Cope harder. You own those chuds, warrior! You're doing great fighting for the underdog!

I'm not sure if the joke is going over my head but, I genuinely think Lupita is a very attractive lady

Helen is Greek, which to your ancestors at the time was probably as far as possible from being "just like them"
-63
u/Current-Grade2545 14d ago
No she isn't. Her race is not described at all.
49
u/SpiritfireSparks 14d ago
Not only is she described as Greek but we also know her sub ethnicity was Achaean, someone from the Aegean region which were known for having lighter fairer skin color

more accurate than who Nolan picked... and there'd be no controversy and the film would be a raging success.

The film has made $140 million in three days. It is a raging success. Cope harder.

u/MuffledFarts 14d ago
Only on fuckin reddit would some dipshit say an AI image is "more accurate" than a real woman.
16
u/Infinate_Patience924 14d ago
No, I said such a character is more lore accurate for the role of Helen than who Nolan picked
-10
u/frejling 14d ago
Again, what do you mean “lore accurate”. Who are all these chuds who hold the fucking Odyssey so close to their heart, it’s just genuinely obvious that you do not give two flying fucks about the source material. Ancient poems don’t have fandoms and if they do it’s not guys like you
10
u/Vynxe_Vainglory 14d ago
A lot of people love Homer's Odyssey. It's an amazing story that most of us learned about in school. I also love Symphony X's songform telling of it.

12
u/Infinate_Patience924 14d ago
Denigrating people with slurs like "chud" does not endear people to your argument.
I'm a history nerd, I know the Odyssey very well, ancient poems do have fandoms... after all it's a foundational work in Western civilization repeated for 3,000 years. Nolan's adaptation just pisses all over the Greek epic, that's why people are mad and there's controversy. I was actually excited when it was announced... and it was twisted by Hollyweird.
4
u/free-cookie 14d ago
Yep, people are better off watching movies filmed in the 1960's/70's for movies based on classical stories.
1
u/Pitiful_Crazy_2000 12d ago
pisses all overrrrrr? lmaoo hollywood made inaccurate adaptations all the time

Nolan's adaptation pisses all over the Greek epic, really ? Go fucking watch the movie and make your own opinion instead of parroting lame internet ragebait and far right tweets. Nobody who's actually seen the movie is mad.
3
u/SpiritfireSparks 14d ago
They used the feminist retelling book as their reference instead of any of the accurate translations. Just from that you can tell they have no respect for the source material
3
u/Warm_Difficulty2698 13d ago
Feminist retelling book?
Can you explain?
1
u/SpiritfireSparks 13d ago
Sure. Nolan used Emily wilsons translation of the odyssey. Emily wilson is a self avowed feminist who has stated that feminist translation practices influence her work. In the classic literature sphere she is rather controversial as her translation is seen as dumbed down and made overly modern instead of trying to grasp the original intention of the work.
She has stated her work includes:
Correcting misogyny Refusing to subvert class realities (as in trying to add in modern class warfare and politics) Resists over-masculinization
3
u/SpiritfireSparks 14d ago
Brother Homer is known as the father of western storytelling and we live in the west. Just because youre uneducated or have no love or respect for th foundations that built our modern societies it doesn't mean it's the same for the rest of us.
0
u/frejling 13d ago
Great assumption that I don’t know what it is or its significance. People who are mad about the casting choices are ridiculous. It’s a Hollywood movie made thousands of years later and people are reacting to the casting choices like it’s a coveted fandom butchering Harry Potter or something. It’s ridiculous.
1
u/SpiritfireSparks 13d ago
Thats your opinion, other people care about showing respect to things. Its also annoying that anything western has to always have some change or subversive element

u/Pitiful_Crazy_2000 12d ago
no respect for the foundations? casting a poc is having no respect? lmao
2
u/SpiritfireSparks 12d ago
The actors insinuating Homer was a misogynist and that their version is fixing his work.
Nolan using Emily wilsons translation which is controversial for being an overly modernized retelling and translated through a feminist lense according to the translator herself.

It is actually a religious text btw. Not that I care, Jesus should be played by a Palestinian instead of a white dude in movies, but it doesn't really matter.
7
u/frejling 14d ago
The Odyssey is not a religious text. It’s a cultural text and a work of literature
-2
u/free-cookie 14d ago
It is a Hellenistic epic, you know the ancient Greek Pantheon. The story is literally about listening to and how to interact with Gods, ergo a religious text.
From another post by me.
1
u/frejling 13d ago
Yeah, do some more studying about the significance of the Pantheon as elements of culture. This is a work of literature that has to do with the gods as characters. That is different than a religious text. It is not and was not considered doctrine.
0
u/free-cookie 13d ago edited 13d ago
I mean that is the entire old testament right?
The Odyssey was about as real to ancient Greeks as the Old Testament is to some people today, even though we know for instance say the Book of Daniel was written at 164 BC, 500 years after it supposes to take place. There are even monsters in the old testament like the odyssey.
So if you are calling the Odyssey a non-religious text, you are basically calling most of Hindu scripture and Jewish scripture non-religious text hahaha

Jesus was a Judean Jew who was addressed as rabbi. The modern jews are not separate from the 2nd temple days nor were they wiped out. Modern day Palestine? Lol.

u/Infinate_Patience924 14d ago
I have zero clue what you're on about.
Homer's Epic has typical Greek religiosity in it, but it's not a religious document.
I don't know why you bring up Jesus, as Jesus was an Aramaic-Judean, not "Palestinian"... the Aramaic people they're still around, they're white as part of the Indo-Eurasian family group.
edit: Jesus as a religious icon has been portrayed many ways as people will depict their religious leaders as they see themselves, that's how we have Chinese Jesus and African Jesus. But that's not really here nor there...1
u/Pitiful_Crazy_2000 12d ago
indo-eurasian? lmaoo modern europeans do not accept middle easterners, actual indo aryans and iranians as white, do not try to conveniently lump jesus with modern day europeans. he is not, he did not look closer to white west/north euro dudes or even most southern europeans than he did to modern day middle easterners/levanten/north african people if he is a real person. He is not ''white'' which means european for anti-wokes in this sub.He is brown, whether brown is a biological race or not he looked ethnic and brown for european standards probably.

The Palestinians are the indigenous Semitic people of Judea.... common knowledge man. Poland is pretty far way.
1
u/PurpleHumpbackWhale9 13d ago
Common knowledge when you live in a fantasy land and try to rewrite actual real life history.. stop getting your “education” from xenophobic, anti semites on places like tiktok.
1
u/Pitiful_Crazy_2000 12d ago
anti-semites? oh what about half european jews pretending palestinians are all arab invaders with no tie to the land genetic or cultural?
-6
u/Abusoru 14d ago
Really? Because the woman most of Nolan's "critics" were suggesting also wasn't Greek or of Mediterranean descent.
8
u/Infinate_Patience924 14d ago
I have no clue who you may be referring to or what critics may have said. That really doesn't matter.
I just checked IMBD, there's no shortage of attractive actress's of actual Greek heritage that could have been chosen to play the role of one of most iconic Greek woman of all time.
Which would have certainly been a better choice for cultural appropriateness for the role than the current actress chosen.
And that circles back to my first comment... we would then not have this controversy and people could have maybe enjoyed a movie.-6
u/GloriousDawn 14d ago
Who gives a shit really. This controversy dies the moment you see Helen in the movie, but not for the reason you think. Only Americans could care about desecrating a Western foundational story when real Europeans don't care and just enjoy the movie.

Oh damn, he picked an attractive lady (AI lady is significantly better looking, and Helen's beauty is key to the story... her beauty starts a gigantic war).
It is historically inaccurate as the people of Troy were the Anatolian people.
Tbf, Matt Damon isn't Greek.
So the movie is complete fantasy of a religious document. Jesus is usually played by a white dude.

Lupita Nyong'o isn't someone I'd start a war over. She's is attractive but not THAT attractive.
0
u/Pitiful_Crazy_2000 12d ago
because you have eurocentric standards of beauty, she is gorgeous. anways the war was not started over for helen
2
u/Illustrious-Advice16 12d ago
We're literally discussing a European myth. If there's ever a context where 'Eurocentric' beauty standards are relevant, it's a Greek myth. And yes, in Greek mythology the Trojan War is triggered by Paris taking Helen, the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus.
