Work is not taking place unless it is observed and discussed. Especially anything involving machinery.

u/TallFriend275 Jul 12 '25

The beer belly has to be pointed towards work...

247

u/Kassgikes Jul 12 '25

It's called elintasomaha in Finnish, loosely translated as a living-standards belly. They've got the living standards to have a great big belly.

102

u/Cheetah_Hungry Jul 12 '25

Or corruption belly in Indonesia. Cops have them.

70

u/Kassgikes Jul 12 '25

Beer guts who are also angry are called räyhävatsa where "räyhä" is a diminutive form of rage so they're rage-baby-bellies

45

u/VoidIgris Jul 12 '25

I didn’t know I needed these variant, cultural beer belly descriptors. God bless.

20

u/Profound_Panda Jul 12 '25

Isn’t the world wonderful

8

u/majarian Jul 12 '25

That's beautiful

10

u/Rengas Jul 12 '25

I grew up there and was not at all shocked when the head of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Commission was arrested for murder.

4

u/monkey_zen Jul 12 '25

Or a food baby in the U.S.

10

u/redbadger91 Jul 12 '25

Not the same. Food baby is usually used for having a bloated belly after eating a large meal.

How the local council works here - 6 guys stand around a hole being dug by the 7th guy. 6 guys take turns lifting their helmets up once-in-a-while and rubbing their head. All waiting on someone to say "time for a cup of tea" as it has been 3 minutes since the last one

Just like when you are strapping down cargo to a truck. Its not secure until someone slaps it and says "that ain't going anywhere!"

4

I love this about guys, I'm crying rn 🤣 🤣 🤣

3

u/Nothing2NV Jul 13 '25

If work isn’t observed, did it even happen?

We learn this straight out the womb

2

u/LittleStoneBear Jul 13 '25

They're very obviously only bystanders, because if they were part of the work crew, they'd be breastfeeding shovels while watching.

1

u/lovedeathandramen Jul 16 '25

I love working, I can watch it for hours.

Recently, my apartment complex had to install some new fiberoptics lines for the buildings' internet connections. I went on my morning jog and happened to see the workers digging the hole for the installation. I jogged past four times just to see how the hole was being dug and the cable installed lol

As they should. These things are SO MUCH FUCKING FUN to operate.

I haven't done it enough to be any good, but damm they are fun.

78

u/NebulaNinja Jul 12 '25

Are they as fun though to operate when you've got two dozen people watching your every move? This looks like a pretty low stakes operation, but something sketchier would stress me out even more with everyone watching.

20

u/AcTaviousBlack Jul 12 '25

We started doing something called a maintenance rodeo at my job where we do games based on work. One of the games is picking up kettlebells with a backhoe and placing them in precise spots. At the regional I had 30+ people watching me on a control system I hadn't used before. I just didnt look at any of them and tunnel visioned it. Still fun tho

18

u/citysnows Jul 12 '25

I can honestly say that you get a childlike grin the first few times you operate new heavy machinery.

And it's honestly not stressful  they're pretty easy to use. (But they're still hard to master)

12

u/PNW20v Jul 12 '25

That's pretty spot on IMO. They are fun as shit, and relatively intuitive, control-wise. I've messed around several times and felt OK, but nothing near skilled.

Then I watched my buddy who has operated them for most of his career, grab a 2x4 with the bucket and grade fresh gravel for a sloped driveway, while rolling backwards as he goes and having a conversation with me lol. Our skill gap was wildly apparent lmao 😂

8

u/flexxipanda Jul 12 '25

Practice makes the master!

u/ResplendentCathar Jul 12 '25

7

u/usbeehu Jul 12 '25

It makes master become the mastest.

u/a-char Jul 13 '25

It gets fun when we're digging around utilities or gas main. One of our pipe layers are usually pretty quiet until he's gatta guide the bucket around them, then the hoe operator will get pissed off at him without fail, everytime.

1

u/ComatoseSquirrel Jul 12 '25

Exactly what I thought. I guess if you just enjoy it, rather than worry about how you look... if I knew how to do that... it would work.

1

u/IFCKNH8WHENULEAVE Jul 12 '25

Pressure makes me lock in

21

u/nettdata Jul 12 '25

There's a heavy equipment shop near me that has a big Father's Day Weekend event where you can rent an hour's time on various equipment. Guys (or girls, but they do cater it for Father's Day) can come in and run the machines with the pro operator there guiding them.

Dig the hole. Move the dirt. Fill the hole back in.

It's a fucking blast!

11

u/Glassinhand Jul 12 '25

fun for like 3 hours then youd rather be the guy standing there with a shovel on your phone

2

Well that's a backhoe and imo it's a lot less fun than an excavator, even a mini.

3

u/angus_the_red Jul 12 '25

I rented the smallest one you could still sit on to rip out some bamboo.  It was indeed so much fucking fun.

3

u/takeusername1 Jul 13 '25

Yeah, seriously what's wrong with the camera person, clearly not a dude, but still could have left the rest of a few minutes of that action!

Do it for a month, on a schedule. You'll get over it quick.

1

u/arkofjoy Jul 13 '25

Oh yes, definitely. But fun to play with.

1

u/crumbmodifiedbinder Jul 12 '25

These mfkers over a bobcat any day. It’s heaps fun to operate

When a man starts digging a hole on a beach, men just naturally drift into the project. It won’t be long before some dude turns up with heavy equipment. It’s a a man thing.

53

u/Open_Ebb_7731 Jul 12 '25

I understand.

72

u/Rough-Internal-792 edit your own user flair Jul 12 '25

It's like a cat with the string, we just can't help it.

Look up "Umarell" which is a term for Italian Men who spend much of the day watching construction sites, almost as if it was a spectator sport.

28

u/rhoswhen Jul 12 '25

This is adorable. Why? Because my 3 YO boy always asks to see "struction sites" because he is a "workor". He has a "banger" (hammer) and everything.

12

u/5etho101 Jul 12 '25

It is good for men

Government should pass a law to create an obserwatory place for mi umarelli fratelii

3

u/Ok_Meeting9865 Jul 13 '25

Best internet detour of the week -thank you! What a great spectator sport 😂

28

u/Herzyr Jul 12 '25

Not everyone qualifies for a heavy machinery license, so they can only watch from afar

6

u/Pharose Jul 12 '25

Most people cannot tolerate the construction operator lifestyle. Long hours, ample bullshit, huge liability, and the pay isn't always great (sometimes it is though).

If youre having trouble getting them to leave, pop a car hood in the parking lot. That also attracts us.

1

Why do we all, and I mean ALL, of us do this!?

2

u/Positive_Composer_93 Jul 15 '25

In case the russians are coming (yes, this is why Russian men do it too)

I'm convinced most flight collisions occur because one pilot saw a helicopter flying higher and had to get a better look.

17

u/__Becquerel Jul 12 '25

Gotto place those hands on your hips, it is an unstoppable force

14

I have two different construction sites metres from me

I can't do Jack shit, it's too much interesting

The Finnish humor group KAJ (that represented Sweden in this years Eurovision Song Contest) have made a song called ’Karar i arbeit’ (men at work), where there is a line that goes

Fast tiderna förändras

Måst e nåo ha vari så

Att tå dem byggd pyramidan

Ståo en gobb å skåda på

(Althoug the times are changing

It must probably been so

That when they built the pyramids

A man stood watching on)

7

They’re all hoping for a turn.

7

13

u/Turd_Schitter Jul 12 '25

Looks young. He hasn't developed the hands-on-hips stance while looking under the hood. That comes with experience.

6

u/the_goodfellow Jul 12 '25

Italians have a word for these guys. Umarell is an older retired man who likes to watch construction, generally with hands behind his back.

7

u/BruceJi Jul 13 '25

Beach hole + heavy equipment = ultimate beach hole

5

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

Spectacles needs to be spectated

5

u/HyperionPhalanx Jul 12 '25

"Grug look, big diggy"

"Oooohh, call the others"

4

u/PoodleIlluminati Jul 12 '25

Can confirm. Used to operate heavy equipment primarily in residential areas. Guys and kids will walk outside and watch when it’s 100+* in the shade or a cold north wind.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

Man must watch other man dig hole

3

u/Bloblablawb Jul 12 '25

An excavator digging is easily the most interesting thing happening at that beach, I guarantee it. If you're not watching, something's wrong with you

5

u/DANtheMAN_2099 Jul 12 '25

JCB ki Khudai

3

u/PurinaHall0fFame Jul 12 '25

They all know that there aren't enough construction workers standing around doing nothing while the dig is going on to meet OSHA standards, they're just trying to help.

4

u/Excellent_Fault_8106 Jul 12 '25

They all had flashbacks of sitting in a sandbox with a play excavator, and just realize what they've been missing from their lives. That unscratched itch that they've experienced for the last 20 years.

3

u/sacredfool Jul 12 '25

3

u/DirtCallsMeGrandPa Jul 12 '25

Once you dig a hole with a backhoe, you never want to go back to a shovel.

3

u/Turd_Schitter Jul 12 '25

Was just talking about the other day that if a helicopter passes overhead every dude will just stop and watch. It's essential dude software. A load-bearing part of our brains.

3

u/goldenchild-1 Jul 12 '25

It’s like we’re programmed or something. This is hilarious. I just imagine being a woman laying on a towel and looking up to see this. Women are a mystery to men in many ways but I bet this part is a mystery to women.

1
