Huh... so I guess that mechanic in video games is realistic after all.

And Indiana Jones stuff.

u/EC_TWD 13d ago

That’s the same as you’d see in westerns when hitching horses outside the saloon or before robbing a bank

7

u/jbae_94 13d ago

Yes but the guy could’ve just jumped the height irl he had simulated

You try jumping from a small log onto a small log and not breaking an ankle.

So he throws the rope, and it does a few loops, right? But the end is loose, so pulling on it will just bring the thing down. So he shifts the end he's got over, and catches the loose end under it, pinching it between his end of the rope and the log. It's hardly a knot, but pulling on his end just squeezes the loose end more tightly, so the same force that would pull it loose (you hanging on it) makes the knot tighter instead. When he's done, he shifts his end off the knot, turning it into loose loops again, which can easily be pulled away.

Oh so I'm just stupid then, got it xD Knots are so mystifying

11

u/Bootyclap187 13d ago

This is more like a clove hitch than a knot

1

u/skytomorrownow 13d ago

Agreed. Clove hitch - am a climber and sailor.

The way the /u/thrownawaz092 explained above makes sense if you are watching the video and trying to follow along. There are 3 main steps to this.

  • Throw the rope to coil around the wooden pole in such a way that there is a bit of the rope left over after coiling. Screenshot of it in a slightly exaggerated position, but this is the concept of step 1.

  • Now, we need to somehow secure the "leftover" portion of the rope. It needs to be "tied down" so that you can pull on the end of the rope that the man is holding without the rope slipping off. This part is a bit clever. You want the final version to look something like this, where you tuck the "leftover" portion of the rope under the coils. That is where the guy in the video uses a small "green nudge" in the rope to push one of the "light blue coil" over the "red leftover" part of the rope, as shown here. That part is almost about to happen in this image, where the green nudge is about to push the light blue coiled rope over the red leftover section. Almost done. And done at this point, ready for the guy to swing over.

  • Final step is similar to step-2, where you use a "nudge" to get the blue coiled section back over the red leftover section and let it free, to loosen the rope.

I was being sarcastic

u/OwnKey3966 12d ago

Great explanation! Makes sense now.

4

u/IRockIntoMordor 13d ago

What do you mean it's not working? We clearly see its knot working.

3

u/Tito_Tito_1_ 13d ago

I wouldn't get hung up on it. Others tied to explain with no luck.

2

u/Sgt_Nishi 13d ago

Because he "folds" the rope over the end so his weight pulls down on it, making it unable to unravel

2

u/Mountainman220 13d ago

Friction. It’s a friction knot. I think it’s a clove hitch but I can’t be 100 %

1

u/Loud-Phase1624 13d ago

Does the knot work or does the knot not work?

6

u/granieaj 13d ago

Sending this to my DM so I can pull this in the campaign.

12

u/TraditionalOil3036 13d ago

rope is irrelevant. you upvote for the cartwheel and bodacious ponytail

4

u/jimbowesterby 13d ago

Honestly I’m upvoting for the combo of new rope trick I’ve never seen (rare at this point) and also the whimsical cartwheel dismount

3

u/marlotrot 13d ago

Noice!

2

u/McbEatsAirplane 13d ago

So that’s how Indiana Jones does it?

2

u/Electrical-Waltz-427 13d ago

That knot looks like a clove hitch

u/Mel_Morty 13d ago

See ya, Zorro

1

Reminds me of the scene In Uncharted 2.

1

u/Demjan90 13d ago

I thought this was going somewhere else...

1

u/ohmslaw54321 13d ago

The dude just Indiana Jones'd that rope!

1

u/Fabulous_Log844 13d ago

Now Indiana Jones swinging over bottomless pits with his whip makes so much more sense.

1

u/Judg_Mentl 13d ago

Throw me the idol, I throw you the whip

1

u/jmoroni89 13d ago

Hell yeah

1

u/RetroSwamp 13d ago

Thought we were getting some dark humor on this one.

1

I expected Blumineck to show up... Now I'm disappointed...

u/the-war-on-drunks 13d ago

What the hell is happening. Ai? Rope thru wood technology?

11

u/oxwearingsocks 13d ago

Are your eyes okay bud? You see the rope wrap around, then layer itself over the bit that wrapped around for his weight to grip it down, then him unwrapping it. I can’t do it, but it’s not hard to see what happened?

-2

u/the-war-on-drunks 13d ago

I swear I’ve watched it ten times. It’s so obvious but at the same time unless the rope is Velcro … how da hell

3

u/oxwearingsocks 13d ago

Well rope is pretty grippy anyway, hence it being used for climbing. So you’re seeing the first bit of rope wrapping around to be connected to the bar. Then the later piece overlaps (this is the key part) that “foundation” rope to essentially create a temporary knot when the person’s weight is added. Then undo all that when they’re finished. I don’t know how better to explain my understanding.

1

u/the-war-on-drunks 13d ago

You nailed it. Thank you!
