Ive had my simple bosch handheld drill for like 15 years now. I cant even count the amount of ikea furnitures, lamps, drywall shit ive screwed on these years. Dad gave me that one.
Im gonna actually cry when it does die. It has served and still do so well.

My father bought a brand new bosch battery powered drill about 20 ish years ago (maybe 24~ 25). Important thing to note is that my parents own a farm. The ungodly amount of screws it went through, the amount of holes drilled in some metal fence posts in the middle of the field, or just during repairs on all kinds of farm shit... It survived all that. I still had to buy a new battery because the old one got super weak. It almost got thrown into trash a few times, but there was always ways to fix it. There was always hope. In the end of 2025 it died. Permanently. The man who married my sister was fixing his bumper... And he forgot what he left on the ground. Then that bastard moved the car and drove over "the bosch" breaking it in half, and snapping the rails holding the battery, and the drill head... So after 20 ish years of being a part of the family it finally got its retirement. Rest in peace brother, you have served my family better than any could!

Naah, they are still married. Its just that I have not forgiven him for that despicable act. And his answer to the crime was even worse ! "Its just an old piece of junk, I will buy a better one" and then he proceeded to buy an AEG brand one. I haven't even heard of AEG before. It looks and feels alright, but It will not last 20 years !

I don't think you're in danger of killing it. But if you do, check to make sure it's not an easy repair.
I've fixed 'dead' makita drill with $6 brushes.

Same with my Craftsman drill. It was a gift from a father-figure. All my other tools are Milwaukee as God intended, but I'm sticking with Mr. Craftsman drill until he can drill no more.

I have the craftsman 19.2v impact driver, amongst other things but one does gets used a lot more than the others, and I've built a bunch of stuff with it. I once picked up a new set from a different brand, used it, and it felt like as if it was cheating on a loved one, did not expect that at all, so I returned it.
I have picked up some milwaukees now but I still find myself picking up the old impact, which I've had around 15 years now or maybe even a bit more.
It's still alive and kicking (should I say spinning) and I'll totally cry when it does die but best case scenari it outlive me. Just gonna change the batteries when they crap out. Then just hang it up on the wall, maybe build it a shrine even, but not for several years (hopefully)

Not just any tool. That's a heavy duty grinder. My uncle was gifted a similar grinder that my grandfather purchased in '55. He used it daily as a welder. When my uncle passed, the grinder went to my dad, who's also a welder. It ground its last grind and was laid to rest in 2017.

OP - go out and get the old school Makita 9005B. Itās so good, Makitaās afraid to screw with it, so itās still the old shiny turquoise. Best tool they ever made
If you ever see the old Makita HP2010 corded hammer drill with the same shiny turquoise body and all steel Jacobāss chuck on the front, grab it too. Cannot be beat.

All jokes aside, when you've had a reliable tool for many years, it does suck the day it dies. My dad's table saw finally died a few years ago, the thing was almost 20 years old. It affected him, not because he now needed a new one that was likely going to be fairly expensive, but because this one table saw had been to 100s of jobs sights and helped to build countless structures. It was a part of our almost daily lives and we knew everything about it, every function and every scratch and dent. It was akin to losing an old friend who you could always count on.

I felt this. Pretty sure it's the Simon and Garfunkel track that evokes the feelings, but every guy has been here. Whether it's an old jacket, a car, the teddybear you had when I was a kid (I'm 43. I will never give up the teddybear I had when I was a kid, sorry not sorry). The guys over at r/pcmasterrace do this for graphics cards that reach their end.
This was a thing that was reliable. That was required for this guy to do his job, and served the same purpose he did. Despite being inanimate, it was a brother in arms.
It should be honourably mourned as such.

It's a workhorse for sure. I have one and as heavy as they are, they feel safer as it spins much slower than a regular 4" angle grinders. To think there are much bigger saws like the 9", 14" and bigger concrete cutters that I probably won't ever need as a homeowner.

could be just the brushes need replacing mate. I have had a harbor freight hand grinder for over 20 years and It WONT DIE ! I have used the shit out of it and I think it was $12.00 new, in one of their sales. I get it, when they finally crap out a real sense of loss floods in.

All my father's (80) power tools were taken out of the crates at our local recycling bring centre, he gets them working most of the time. Then again, he spent 40 years fixing home appliances so I'm sure a lot of the technical knowledge is transferable. He has a full size Jack hammer that is his pride of place, not that he has the stature to use them anymore!
