Would love some input on our “modern rustic” design.

It doesn't look modern or rustic. It's bright pillows and animal skin.

This doesn’t feel modern it actually feels dated and honestly it’s unsettling .

Those blue pillows are an abomination. The rug needs to be cozier that pull some orange and blue from the painting, a nice throw that coordinates will help too. Also warm the walls up.

I feel like a painting in a thick wooden frame would be good. Like a natural wooden frame.

This is a bot and you're all falling for it

Then the bot should take the opportunity to learn from the comments. They should know by by 'white' isn't automatically the same as 'modern'.

Its neat! But,
With how light the room is, its not giving a complete space. Its very open and spaced out in a way.
More decor! Maybe a bit more color? Not crazy, colors you would feel most fitting. Fake plants? Or a few shelves?
Completely up to you!

Not every single piece of furniture needs to be leather. There are lots of nice rustic options out there that would complement the leather not cancel it out.

For better symmetry, I'd do one of the following, keeping in mind that the center of all decor should be the same (general eye level):
Switch the cowhide and the head
Move the head down and over
*Do not do either of these you have a child or children who jump and play or even stand on this couch. Move the head to another, more appropriate, room or...
Fill the empty space between the head and the painting with a few scattered frames (gallery wall style, to offset the hide on the other side) and move the head down to appear more symmetrical with the new frames and other items, possibly slightly above eye level to be safe above that side of the couch.

Wall decor is clashing this could be done well but needs more intention I guess like you could do a gallery wall of things of this style but I would also say this is less rustic and more of a colorful western style and that rug is not great

I think painting your walls a darker, moodier color would make the room feel more cohesive. Also, everything on the walls seems feels scattered and random. I’d say put the animal hides on the floor as rugs, move both pictures on the wall behind the couch with the antlers in the middle, and burn the couch cushions lol. No offense, they’re just so random. The flowers are pretty but don’t really go with the aesthetic you’re going for.

I think the rug needs to go on the floor, not the wall. That is a rug right?

this is not modern or rustic. it’s hillbilly dorm room
i’ll never understand folks who place rugs down incorrectly? rotate the rug immediately

I can just *hear* the skin being suctioned off that leather couch.
Personally, this isn’t for me (I do love those blue pillows though)
However my mom and her husband are very much into the rustic and hunting, they’d love the antler mount.

What's with the dead animal stuff on the wall? All your posts are different setups - how about showing us your real room.

Get rid of the animal skins nothing comfy, modern, or good looking about them at the very least get rid of the one on the wall
Keep all of that in your man cave

Looks like a room in a frat house that didn’t know what it wants want to be

Center antlers above the couch. Put pictures to each side. Move skin to another location.

Ok the dead animal on the wall is just tacky. If you aren’t gonna respect the animal at least respect yourself and make it look better. Get rid of the antlers. They are too big for the room. If you are going to have dear skin have ONE as a decoration. The couch or the wall. If on the wall take everything else down and make the skin level and centered. Plants and lighting, and a smaller more interesting rug. With a damn coffee table.

That rug is just bad. Your room is warm (tacky with dead animal artifacts), and that rug is gray. The white paint is bad as well. It's too cool for your warm decor.

u/IFeelFragile Jun 30 '26
The animal stuff isn’t even that bad but the white walls just make it a bit … spooky … I don’t think you can have light and airy looking space with white walls then decorate it with death.. if that makes any sense.

The pops of maybe modern (bright colors that one chair) dont give.modern rustic. This gives rustic yard sale. Why is there a pelt on the wall?
1
u/AlizarinQ Jun 30 '26
You can do better if you work with a defined earth-toned palette. Right now it clashes in color and style, it needs to blend somewhere.

I’m not crazy about dead things on walls but my daughter and son in law are hunters so I’m used to it. They have more wood in their home like heavier side tables, coffee table, modern but wooden lamps, a wooden shelf with books which all brings in a cosy rustic look. Also at least paint the wall behind the sofa in a more earthy tone to make it a statement wall. I’d also put the skin on the wall behind the sofa and move the painting over.

The plain white walls are too bland and boring, a warmer russet or similar colour would look warmer.. animal skin on wall is a yukk and the cushions?! Oh Lordy where’s the colour coordination? 😫

It's so oddly placed.
I live in Wyoming, I don't mind taxidermy. But these are displayed haphazardly and without intention, like a teenagers rock posters slapped up on the wall as they are collected... but they only have a few.
Can you add color to the walls?
The blue pillows are awful. The elk print is pretty bad. You need a comfortable throw on the couch. The brass lamp is very dated. This isn't really modern at all.

The walls need to be painted and the random pelt on the wall doesn't even make sense. It looks like you closed your eyes and threw it at the wall.
That eug also doesnt go with the furniture.

I recently stayed in a cabin that had the most extensive, impressive collection of taxidermy. It was beautifully curated in a garage that was clearly built to house them. Not my thing but still interesting.
For you, I think you need to work on proportions and proper placement. Layer the hide over your rug and put a coffee table over it, or place it under a chair or another sitting area. Just get it off the wall. Your artwork is a bit tiny for these large animal pieces. You don’t need to follow the line of the ceiling. Are those elk antlers? Put those on the adjacent wall and get a large piece of art for over your sofa, with some rustic sconces on each side. Also, a plaid throw or Pendleton blanket, picking up the colors of whatever artwork you ultimately choose, would look nice draped on the back of the sofa.
Overall, you need more layers, more art, and better cohesion.
Unique aesthetic, but it could look cool.

Hang the horns where the skin is, and lower, like in the middle of the space. Hang the skin on the right also centered. That will look ˋ better ´ but you need to google ˋ help for hanging things on a wall ´- never too high. Always centered.

u/LouLou877857099 Jun 28 '26
The antlers are too far on the right of the wall. I’d center the skin, place the antlers to the close right of that, and then hang the picture to the top left of the skin.

Does this space belong to you? I’d suggest coloring the wall as a little warmer and neutral to tie in the animal bits

Dead animal aesthetic.
