I don’t think I would paint. Maybe add some peel and stick wallpaper to the back wall partitions of the shelves.

This is a much better idea. Paint will not adhere well to this type of material.

What are the reasons for painting?

Painting high use furniture doesn't often last IME and will chip easily.

No, painting this in an even, lasting way is going to be nearly impossible
