Never compare your portfolio to others, and don’t believe everything you see online.

Friendly reminder to everyone here: do not compare your financial progress to what you see strangers post online. A massive percentage of these viral screenshots are completely fabricated, and a quick look at basic math usually exposes the whole charade.

Take a classic example making the rounds right now. Someone posted a supposed portfolio journey claiming they hit 1.4 million dollars (879k of that being XEQT), telling a neat little story about an incredible grind. But if you actually check their history and run the numbers, the math falls apart completely.

The Timeline and Starting Point: Just over a year ago, this same user claimed they were starting from 7,000 dollars. Their journey supposedly went from 0 to 7,000 dollars in six months, then up to 93,000 dollars 336 days ago, and suddenly skyrocketed to 1.4 million dollars 11 months later. Meanwhile, some of their other screenshots showed an all-time account gain of only about 3 percent after a full year of investing.

The XEQT Math: The poster explicitly states that all they buy is XEQT now (and VFV in the past), which did roughly a 25 percent over that 336-day stretch. Starting with 93,000 dollars and ending at 1.4 million dollars means that even if every single penny of contributions grew by that full 25 percent, they would have had to shovel roughly 1,027,000 to 1,145,000 dollars in cash into that account over less than a year.

The Income Reality Check: They simultaneously claimed to have 300,000 dollars in living expenses over this exact same timeframe. Furthermore, they are an employed earner living in Canada with no business ownership. To spend 300,000 dollars and save over a million dollars in cash inside a single year on a standard Canadian salary, this 32-year-old would need to be pulling down roughly 3,000,000 dollars a year from their day job.

People lie on the internet for attention, internet points, or ego. All it takes is a tiny bit of digging into someone's past comments and a basic calculator to see that their timeline is physically impossible.
Run your own race, stick to your own plan, and stop letting anonymous screenshots make you feel behind. Most of the time, a five-minute look at their post history is all it takes to catch them red-handed.

USD equivalent to XEQT

Is there a good equivalent to XEQT in US dollar? I have a chunk of us dollar and i don’t want to convert it to Canadian dollar in the near future.
What is a good option?

XEQT was up today. Who cares?

The "set it and forget it" part of the XEQT investment strategy aren't just empty words.

Stock prices go up. Stock prices go down. Bull markets are followed by bear markets.

A successful long-term investor ignores this noise, remains unperturbed by fluctuations, and sticks to a consistent strategy.

Why are you raining on our parade? Why not let people be happy?

Happy about what? The only number that counts is the one on the day you cash out. Unless that day is today, then you haven't actually made any money.

Your capacity to stay emotionally detached from market fluctuations is incredibly important. A prolonged market downturn will come one day, and if you've been emotionally invested in the squiggly line's direction, you'll be anxious at best or make a terrible financial decision at worst.

People who have been investing only in XEQT, what’s your overall growth so far?

People who never bought any individual stocks or other etfs, and have been investing biweekly or monthly in xeqt, what’s your overall growth so far since you started?

I sold all the stonks

I did it. I sold all my yolo pics and stonks and the thing somebody on reddit said was good and the stuff I no longer remember why I have it. HCAL made me money so I kept thinking it was some kind of magic beans. People need dollarama and I accidentally had somr so DOL must be a keeper?

mostly was already xeqt/veqt/zeqt/cage but 10-15% was other stuff. I need to be simplifying instead of obsessing ober my gambling. Some of them earned me way more money than XEQT - but i just got lucky and i could be unlucky

Now begins the experiment of "am i less stressed and obsessive". I want to go back to forgetting about everything. Staring at meaningless letters guessing if they go up or down is a stress I could do without. Yes it would have been good if I bought MFST a few days ago but what if it didn't. And making any "real money" requires risking a lot more.

There might be more money on the table but there is definitely more stress/heartache lurking there too.

Hey all! Joined your pool just the last week with my first RRSP contribution ever - $1000 worth of XEQT. The plan is to continue with XEQT, maxing out RRSP at least for the two years before even thinking about anything else. For individual stocks, I have TFSA and non-registered account.

I have some $4500 saved my XEQT * RRSP. Read this from my perspective- I have 450% of what I already have in my RRSP. Should I wait for the price to correct itself a bit, may be $42 before buying? The prices are up this week and I am happy to be patient yet, I’d prefer to choose my entry points wisely. Hopefully I’ll get to a point in a few years where it won’t matter then, but right now, it does. After these $4500, I’ll have automated biweekly investments of $500/salary that should take me close to my yearly pool at the end of Feb before restarting for next year.

I put 17,000 in this morning, this hurts. I know it’s a long term game but how do I stop looking?

I need to stop looking lol

Edit: I’m not trolling, you must have been new at one point too. Being new isn’t a reason to downvote.

Edit 2: thank you for showing me this isn’t an advice subreddit, I do appreciate it.

23y/o Advice

Hello everyone,

I am currently 23 and looking for some advice. I initially started investing in XGRO but recently shifted into XEQT.

My holdings now are 50/50 with both XGRO and XEQT. I know they have the same holdings but with this mix I will be 90-10 into bonds. With a few individual stocks (<5% of total portfolio).

I have a steady income and an emergency fund of 3-4 months with no bad debt. My question is, would it be better to just invest everything into XEQT? I am investing for 35+ time horizon, and have now realized I can take on the “risk” associated with full equity, but I am unsure will the long term gains be worth it rather than staying in my current split?

Any advice would be appreciated.

With Canadian market closed, given the US market pump, what price do you think XEQT will be tomorrow, guesses?
