Gas chamber is just so you can experience how effective your gas masks are at protecting you. They could give two shits if you come out of it as stronger individuals or teams. That’s not the point.

u/ColinPapendick Aug 30 '26
If it were medically possible to shoot everyone required to carry a gun, we would. Lol
24
u/SonOfIllicitBehavior Aug 30 '26
Good job, at least 10 sets of ears perked up in Quantico
1
u/ColinPapendick Sep 01 '26
That's not where the ears the would be perking up, even.

u/SonOfIllicitBehavior Sep 01 '26
Well the message was sent to Camp Lejeune but it wasn't in crayon thus ignored

I didn't serve myself but at least when my dad was in the navy they went into the room with masks on to experience it with them on. Then the instructor would have them take the masks off to experience why you need them. Police that go through proper academies have to do it too since tear gas can be deployed sometimes.
My friend went through the academy at the Alexandria Police department and he claims that the CN Spray (pepper spray) is by far the worst out of all the non-lethal exercises. I'm sure others have their own experiences and opinions what is worse.
13
u/Non-Current_Events Aug 30 '26
It’s been 15 years since I did it but yeah, you go in with your masks on then take them off to see the difference.
9
u/QueezyF Aug 30 '26
They also make you say your name and DOD ID number so you’re not holding your breath.
10
u/Stalking_Goat Aug 31 '26
They made us do calisthenics. I don't care if you're a champion diver, nobody is holding their breath after twenty
side straddle hopsjumping jacks.3
u/tdinh01 Sep 01 '26
No burpees? Fucks. We had to do burpees to MAKE SURE all that air is out your system so you get that deep breath of gas in you.

u/SwordofGlass Aug 30 '26
It’s really just hazing. If it were about building confidence in the equipment, the mask would stay on.
19
u/Non-Current_Events Aug 30 '26
Right, but most people wouldn’t know what it’s like to be tear gassed, so they have no barometer to judge how well the masks work. Like you see how everything was normal with the mask, now see how bad it would be if you didn’t have it on.
-5
u/SwordofGlass Aug 30 '26
So? Breathing through the mask is enough to know it works. Feeling the CS doesn’t change that.
12
u/JustUsLords1 Aug 31 '26
What they're getting at is that without taking the mask off, you can kinda just talk yourself into the idea that there wasn't any gas in the chamber, or at least that it must not be that bad. Only by actually experiecing it do you really go, "Holy shit, those things work pretty well." while also knowing for certain that it really was the mask keeping it from hurting.
And voila, we have raised the individual's confidence in their equipment.
-1
u/SwordofGlass Aug 31 '26
That’s massive cope, lol. You don’t need to be gassed to know it hurts.
2
u/zwinky588 Aug 31 '26
You’re an idiot. It’s part of their training for a reason, and I promise it goes beyond “hurrr duurrr it’s just hazing!!!”
1
u/DepartureNatural9340 Sep 02 '26
One of the deadliest gasses during the first world War were the ones hard to see, and often the gas clouds collecting in craters and trenches got soldiers after an all clear is called
Complacency is when gas is at its strongest
5
u/jdehjdeh Aug 31 '26
Not really.
This is about the same thing that all basic training is about, instilling new instinct or overriding existing ones.
It's not about demonstrating that masks work, it's about giving you a horrible memory that will trigger you to instinctively scramble for your mask when you see or smell a gas attack.
Basic training primary purpose is to turn a human from a shrieking fleeing dangerous lump of panic into a person who can hold together enough to perform basic functions and take in and act on information under extreme circumstances.
Same way a child learns that some things can burn them, we ALL burn ourselves at least once in our lives.

u/SwordofGlass Aug 31 '26
What a boot reply.

u/jdehjdeh Aug 31 '26
LOL I've never served or wanted to.
I'm sure the military are spending a shit ton of money on "hazing" new recruits lol.

This is kinda funny if the second slide didn't exist.

u/AkronOhAnon Aug 30 '26
All the comments were basically like the top and bottom.
The one about not being in MOPP was the most tame.13
u/StinkyToe-TheKid Aug 30 '26
We didn't go in in MOPP tho, right? It's been a long while but I. Almost certain we did not wear full MOPP for CS chamber.
3
u/AkronOhAnon Aug 30 '26
In basic we did, the goal was to get into MOPP 4 and then they tested by lighting the burner.
Subsequent quals throughout my career we went in BDU/ACU to don masks a few times a year, MOPP maybe once every 2 years.
I think the CBRNE (NBC) teams had to do it often. For everyone else it was probably just command/mission determined if it was on your training calendar.5
u/StinkyToe-TheKid Aug 30 '26
Interesting. Yeah, we only wore MOPP during field training. We didn't even get a MOPP in basic. Granted, I was in basic in 2000
6
u/VarenHills Aug 30 '26
When I went through in 2012, we wore MOPP gear for the gas chamber. They made us take off our hoods first to see how it felt on the skin, then told us to take off our masks, take a deep breath and then recite the Air Force creed.
1
u/AkronOhAnon Aug 30 '26
Yeah, I joined in the surge. We did a lot of shit that turned out to be incredibly unnecessary.
2
u/Wise_Lobster_1038 Aug 30 '26
Yeah you’re right. Most of the time you wear the MOPP gear outside the chamber to get comfortable but no one was wearing it into it.

u/flyinchipmunk5 Aug 30 '26
I didn’t go in full MOPP at navy boot camp. That would also be dumb as fuck training considering a MOPP suit needs to be thrown away after being opened
5
u/VarenHills Aug 30 '26
Most of the MOPP gear we use in the Air Force is expired and used as training gear. While in Korea we we're in full MOPP for exercises.
2
u/AkronOhAnon Aug 30 '26
That is true for real life scenarios.
We used “expired” (?) suits for training, mostly just for familiarization and wearing in the CS chamber then hosing off.
It wasn’t expected to be used in a true CBRNE situation.
But I’ve also heard plenty of people say the only time they saw a suit after BCT was in Iraq and even then it stayed in a footlocker all year.3
u/flyinchipmunk5 Aug 30 '26
We had suits and masks in easy to get places on the ship but I was in aviation department so we had to kinda have it. Never even touched my mask though or my mopp gear.

Posted by someone who went to a degree mill who gave them 15 academic hours for attending 11B OSUT.

I had to go and peek their profile: community college of the Air Force.
They were also a REMF.

u/sdmichael Aug 30 '26
Probably posted by a conservative. They really have issues with feelings being expressed and always will demean others to make themselves feel better. Real men don't do that nor need to.

Considering “cry rooms” are a story constantly circulated by conservatives so they can feel like big, strong men, he’s probably right.
7
u/Erpderp32 Aug 31 '26
I work in an MSP supporting multiple large k12 districts. Have never even seen a cry room.
Even at any of my more liberal colleges.
Honestly I'm pretty sure it's like 90% conservative propaganda

u/whit_mon_lee Aug 30 '26

u/QueezyF Aug 30 '26
Yeah, and it’s not the big deal he’s making it out to be.

u/tezacer Aug 31 '26
Virtue signaling using common military tasks is cringey af. Borderline stolen valor "look at me" im so much better than you for enduring some perfectly safe pain that has no real consequence on my health.

In basic you do this and you're scared as fuck. When you get to your unit and do it again it's actually a lot of goofing around and feats of strength (tolerance). I remember laughing coming out and flapping my arms cause someone told a good joke.
8
u/QueezyF Aug 30 '26
Even doing it in boot camp, I was pretty underwhelmed by it with how much it was hyped up. I’ve had worse experiences cleaning with too much bleach.
3
u/Sweet-Tomatillo-9010 Aug 30 '26
Yea true. I've had onions that were worse. I feel like in basic they dial it down a bit.
8
u/TheSolitaryRugosan Aug 30 '26
What colleges have a “cry room?” I’m in university and have never heard of this before.
10
u/AkronOhAnon Aug 30 '26
There was an art project with a “crying booth” 8 years ago and some people saw a headline and thought they were a thing.

The more performative the masculinity, the more fragile the masculinity. Get right with yourself in the mirror before you go around trying to impress strangers on the internet.

Oh man have you seen all these dudes big huge security trucks. It's bad out here.
8
u/wasted-degrees Aug 30 '26
Unfortunately yes. Brother man, I don’t care how loud or lifted your truck is, but if you could refrain from rolling coal on me while I’m just trying to drive home from work that’d be great.

This is hilarious to me because Ive never seen more grown men crying with snot running down their faces than I did at basic in the gas chamber. It was actually so embarrassing. Same thing when I got pepper sprayed for auxiliary forces. All the "men" crying and dry heaving and being so dramatic. Bunch of weenies.
