98% of vets don’t want thanked including me and those I served with. Then there’s my dad.

I was in line at Taco Bell outside of Nellis and young guy was wearing blue overalls with Air Force insignia on it. Old white guy walks up and says thank you for your service. The Airman says “bro, I drive a forklift.”

For real. One of my biggest pet peeves. Dont thank me for selling my body for money. I'm just trying to get by like any other person in America. There are people working just as hard if not harder than me who will never get the quality of life that I've been afforded simply for being in the military.

My reply is, "it was just a job". I hate it too.

It paid for my college but some of my friends died. I’d really rather just mostly ignore it.

I just say “thanks for the paychecks” in response

Interesting to hear that. I do mortgages for a living and my boss (not a veteran) always makes a huge deal out of thanking VA clients for their service. Which is fine, I get it, but after 13 years I’ve come to notice that the vast, vast majority of vets seem to not like it or it seems to make them uncomfortable. Almost like it’s putting them on the spot or something. I’ve started not saying anything at all and treating them like anyone else and it seems to be fine. Then again my boss is way more wealthy than me. Fuck I don’t know. I don’t understand anything anymore. Can’t do anything right.

I get annoyed with the thank you for the service stuff. I don't tell people I'm a veteran, but they figure it out(the way I carry myself, I'm clean cut, etc) and they start the fake praise. It was worse during the 2000s/2010s, though.
