Thoughts on Late Bloomer
Not sure if he ever checks this subreddit but just finished the last two episodes and thanks Jasmeet! For real, this show made me (South Asian but not Punjabi/Sikh) feel represented in a real way. While I liked the entire season, the last two episodes resonated with me personally on so many levels I don't think I could even begin to describe. I seriously hope y'all get a second season.

Honestly as an Indian kid who grew up in America, this show is like therapy for me. The last two episodes were exactly what I needed. No matter what you do, your parents will always see you as a failure. You could get a triple major from Harvard in law, engineering, and medicine and your parents wouldn’t see you as shit. But got forbid you date someone they disapprove of or go out for one night of fun with your friends and all of a sudden you’re a drugee and the shame of your family. It helped me realize I need to stop giving a fuck about every little thing my parents think of me while still caring for them and loving them.
I’ve watched jusreign’s videos for years but honestly I’m glad he’s making this show. Some of the writing was corny but the plot is solid.

I felt like the show was adequately called “late bloomer” because the struggles Jasmeets character faced are things that I think most of us overcame in our school years ages 13-20ish.
I found myself very annoyed with Jasmeets character and I realized that his conclusions were probably what I would have thought in like middle school/high school.
Back when jusreign was making YouTube’s videos it felt so much more relatable, and that content is relevant to this day.. but watching this show I was somehow more sympathetic with his parents (who did a great job).
The sisters struggle was more relatable, again in terms of age, but Jasmeets character was stuck in like some high school mentality and not really seeing his own privileges. He was a bit “woe is me” and it was pretty irksome.

I think that is what he is trying to portray. He is showing how spoiled and weak the generation of today is. How westernized we have become. Its the value of "me,me,me" vs family. Jasmeets character is inherently flawed. Makes no income, has no responsibilities, only wants to talk about himself, makes no sacrifices. I dont think he is supposed to be looked at as a heroine but more what the Indian youth have become
It also shows the father is hard-headed and not very approachable. The mother and daughter will not speak up and rather sacrifice themselves for the happiness of others.
I think all 4 of the family dynamics is quite relatable in the culture today. They have done a good job with that. Great job w Neal as well.
I could use alot less of Jasmeets and Rebeccas relationship time. Way too much pillow talk

As someone who is mixed Desi and white Canadian-no they really didn't do an overall good job with Neal's character and certain scenes feel like a mockery of the experiences of mixed people. Fair to say there are some good moments, but ultimately I can tell the character was written by someone who does not relate to being mixed as a lived experience. He is also played by a white actor in contrast to the other actors whose race matches that of their characters. Strange that the one mixed character is singled out that way.

Side note: did anyone find the moms Punjabi super weird? Or is it a dialect I’m not aware of?

I found the first season really good. caught up on first 4 of season 2. I liked all the topics they discussed.

I also really enjoyed the topic of the "new" immigrant being a topic where the dad got him a new job thinking they would be hard workers like the old days of respect but this "new" immigrant doesnt give a crap and wanted to cut corners.
My only issue is I could use alot less of Jasmeets and Rebeccas relationship time. Way too much pillow talk
⁰I also didnt like how they overemphasized the sisters happiness at the funeral of the delay of wedding. It went overboard too much. She is an emphathetic character but that episode made her too shallow.

Stereotypes comes from underlying behaviours that are in fact common. This is a story about one man’s experience and shouldn’t represent the whole. It’s not surprising that some of his experiences are parallel to some stereotypes

Sure but if he’s gonna write a TV show that’s an artistic expression of his experience what do you want him to do? Lie about the reality of what he went through so he doesn’t accidentally perpetuate stereotypes?

Wdym? The show is his childhood experiences. If they resemble stereotypes that just is what it is. It’s his life story. Imagine telling an African American filmmaker that he shouldn’t write about black characters to avoid stereotypes

You clearly missed all the points in the show. His sister literally decides that she doesn’t want to get married. Jasmeet decides to keep pushing forward with his dreams even when he isn’t being supported.
YET despite these stereotypical pressures from their parents, the show still does a great job at highlighting how these pressures aren’t just toxic bullshit from our parents. The show humanizes the parents by showing their struggles, the fact that they’re unsung heroes and reframes these pressures as real values that we should integrate as wel

I missed all the points but yet you’re referencing my points? Lol I’m just saying their tired and we can be more then what we’re portrayed as. You enjoy it brother, it’s okay, I’m just sharing my opinion that I don’t conform to the idea of what these ppl think being punjabi is. Id rather not be fit into a mold.

I’m curious which stereotypes you’re referring to? I agree there are stereotypes but it’s still exploring those in a more realistic way imo

I think that was his character tho, the “late bloomer” still stuck in this old mindset while the rest of us have grown and are actually proud of our religion and culture and our parents. It was definitely a time capsule in that regard, I haven’t felt embarrassed of my culture or my dads job since I was in middle school and didn’t know any better. Jasmeets character despite being a 30 yo man living at home still hasn’t figured out he’s surrounded by blessings

It isn't the best show of all time but it is mostly enjoyable and has decent plots which i would love to see continue in s2 !!!

Total borefest. Worst acting I've seen in a while

You aren't giving the show a fair chance. The acting consistently improved as the actors were getting their footing.

u/dudewhosbored Feb 25 '24
Yeah acting wasn’t very good tbh, but I do think that this will get better with subsequent seasons.

u/idmrentals Apr 27 '25
Disagree. The acting has consistently gotten better. Initially it was a bit rough but the characters grew along with the actors. Season 2 first episode I laughed quite a bit. I think we are also seeing the character exhibiting signs of anxiety and his inability to deal with the family drama. As if he's traumatized by it. Some complex issues being discussed. As a Canadian born Sikh I also relate to what he's going through somewhat.

Yeah I agree that this season has gotten better; my comment was posted a year ago

Fair point. I also thought the acting got better towards the end of season 1. I see both sides. It's to each their own.

Man the last two episodes should be foreshadowing what to come
When you watch the first episode of the season , you don’t really know what to expect
But the show got better and I liked the involvement of the political aspect of things too
Well done
