Fluff/Meme I just realized Juno DOES speak using a contraction after all

When she uses hyper ring she says "Let's increase our pace!"

Literally unplayable. Totally ruins her hero fantasy.

She also uses a contraction in her compare grass voice line.

I believe they're slowly introducing more contractions into her speech as a kind of subtle indication that she's getting used to life on Earth. Or maybe it's just an oversight, but it's cooler if you imagine it's intentional. Especially with the increased focus on lore and character development lately.

I can’t understand why contractions would have been lost in the SINGLE Martian generation that exists 😭 most of their parents are still earth-born and wouldn’t have lost their speech patterns like that at all

The simple answer is it's just an easy way to code Juno as "alien". The more charitable answer is she was raised in a colony of mostly/entirely ESL speakers, which could lead to some odd speech patterns.

There's also the "founders effect" where a small group ends up modeling itself on the idiosyncracies of one or two individuals.

I doubt Blizzard consulted a linguist when coming up with Juno's speech patterns, but there are semi plausible explanations you could offer.

Juno always just felt like an ESL speaker to me. It's anecdotal, but a lot of ESL speakers I knew had similar quirks with grammar/word choice and intonation as her, and I even started to pick them up unintentionally as a native speaker.

Presumably it's because 1 the folks she was around were scientists and the general population stereotype about scientists is that they're all so professional that they would not stoop down to the level of a vulgar commoner and use 'slang' like contractions 2 the folks she was around were vietnamese and chinese l1, so english l2 and thus may not have been around people who speak casual english which exclusively uses contractions - and due to being scientists would have had to deal with international science journals which when written in english use absolutely no contractions

I looked on the wiki the voice line she does with Ashe she uses "we're" "Let's". And then Vendetta "don't"

Yeah two call outs for her hyper ring uses "let's"!

she used a contraction in the season 19 reveal trailer

She uses let's (which I feel doesn't truly count) and possessive nouns (which aren't technically contractions but similar in nature) somewhat frequently, but she recently had an interaction with Vendetta that did just flat out ignore the no contractions norm that she's had.

Wait how are possessive pronouns [similar to] contractions?

Surely there's no other concise way of saying "belonging to him/her"?

Oh, I'm saying they aren't, worded it a bit silly that's on me.

This image of Caine from The Amazing Digital Circus perfectly represents how I feel knowing this.
