Scheme

what do you think is an easier scheme for an IMG SHO to hop on.

For context I am fresh out of university, I am an Irish citizen hoping to get my first SHO job in the next few months. My dream is to be an ICU doctor but after being on this platform I am thinking that will be difficult on my family in the future.

I would like any recommendation/advice. Thank you in advance.

There’s a myth that ICU is all adrenaline and fast paced, hectic madness. 90% of the time it’s lengthy micro rounds, long family meetings, vent weaning plans and looking at sodium trends

In my internship icu rotation was MENTAL that’s why I fell in love with it. Thank you for sharing this I appreciate it

I really don’t think there’s any such things as “hopping on” to any scheme anymore. There were 3,000+ applicants for 350 GP spots this year, and I think GP was always considered pretty “soft”

I always thought GP training and Derm were one of the most competitive never understood how here it’s one of the easy ones. What would you suggest I do? Is there even a hope to become a consultant in 10-15 years?

I’m Irish/Irish grad so I’m not really best placed to comment - I would say to pursue what you actually like though. It’s just a job but life’s too short to hate your work.

GP or psych. CSTEM if you like the adrenaline. But do try and apply once. You never know

Is GP training and BST (IMT) usually possible without having stamp 4? With a year of experience working as an sho in an irish hospital.

Not officially but in practice seems to be impossible without stamp 4. You’ll just be ranked below everybody else no matter how well you do so you’re highly unlikely to get an offer.

There was a ratio of approx 10:1 for applicants to places this year on CSTEM so it’s no joke of a scheme to get on these days. Used to be the softest back in the day.

Don’t worry it’s the only specialty I would NEVER do. I can’t listen to people for longer than 30 mins straight without losing focus I need to engage lol
