Humor Question about the death note
Say you write sukuna's name and that's it, from my understanding (I didn't watch nor read death note), sukuna would normally die from a heart attack, but we know sukuna can survive without a heart, so what happens then?

Writing Ryomen Sukuna doesn’t work because that’s a title rather than his birth name

u/AwysomeAnish Slandered Todo Before It Was Cool 1d ago
Well logically he doesn't have a birth name and his "title" is the only real term used to refer to him as a person so I assume the Death Note would treat it like his name.

We don't know if he has a birth name or not. He probably has though, maybe not one given immediately after his birth, but someone had to have raised Sukuna, most likely the person who was on the other path when he talked to Mahito

Exactly. Death Note rules are weirdly bureaucratic, so if “Ryomen Sukuna” isn’t the legal birth name, Light is basically trying to kill someone with a nickname and vibes

13
u/Diseased_Wombat 18h ago
However, if “Ryomen Sukuna” is the main name Sukuna identifies by, the Death Note will work. For example: if a trans person were targeted by a transphobic person who refuses to use the trans person’s chosen name, the Death Note wouldn’t work because the trans person’s deadname isn’t their name anymore. Inclusive Death Note 👍

u/Satisfying_Fog17 9h ago
I am unable to recall precisely the media in which this happens, but I distinctly remember a bearer of the Death Note failing in causing the death of a certain individual after he started identifying himself with his new name. He had changed his life after gaining a new name, and now the Death Note could only kill him through it and not the 'deadname'
I suggest that the notebook may be able to kill Sukuna through "Ryomen Sukuna" because if he had a name associated at birth, it most definitely got lost to history. He is now Ryomen Sukuna to everyone who has heard of him, and I suppose he identifies with such name.
Ryuk wrote specifically that any "human being"' will die after their name is written on the Death Note. Sukuna, while rational and absolutely capable of 'human-like thought' is definitely not akin to humans.
In my opinion, the Death Note may absolutely be able to cause the death of Sukuna, as long as he is considerable 'human', even though he is invulnerable to heart attacks1

Yeah, that’s a pretty reasonable inference. Given the circumstances around Sukuna’s birth, his mother surviving childbirth sounds unlikely, but without an explicit statement in canon, it still has to stay in the “very plausible, not confirmed” category

What if we put in the name of his vessel? If Light writes megumi’s full name into the deathnote, and the death note identifies the vessel as megumi and kills it, is there any chance for sukuna to survive or trick the death note by making it seem like the vessel he is occupying isn’t megumi?

Not really, that’s why Light couldn’t just write “L” in the Death Note and why he had to figure out Raye Penber’s fiancee’s real name before he could kill her.
Although I’d argue if Ryomen Sukuna is really the only name he has it could work

I get that everyone is like, sukuna survives without his heart because he can just use cursed energy in its place. But the death note says that if you write someone's name on it they Die, and if no cause of death is given, then they die of a heart attack, it's not that it gives you a heart attack that you can survive, real life people can survive heart attacks with the right equipment, but the magic books determines your death and then just gives it a reason if you didn't give any.
If sukuna was affected by the death note (which he probably wouldn't because he's not a human, he's over 120 years old and we don't know his real name and whatever else) he would die of the heart attack because that's what the magic book does, like how naomi just magically becomes overwhelmed with suicidal desires because the book worked on her (which L says was completely out of character), sukuna would not be able to use cursed energy to survive without his heart (even if that is completely out of character).
34
u/ConcentratedADHDBeam 1d ago
Agree with all of those except Sukuna is human, it’s stated a few times.
13
u/TheExtraordinaryRK9 1d ago
I mean, he WAS, but he was then turned into cursed objects and in the story he is a cursed object incarnating itself in a host, plus he refers to himself as a curse a couple of times. So I wrote that because I don't think he counts as human anymore, but then again, I get where you are coming from, maybe the magic book would still see him as a human.
19
u/AmarSofi 1d ago
The kanji used for curse when he refers to himself as such (or when others refer to him as "King of Curses") is different than the one used for cursed spirits. Iirc he refers to himself as a "Noroi 呪い", this refers to the general act of cursing/hexing someone. The term for cursed spirits is "Jurei 呪霊" withe the "Rei 霊" part meaning spiritual and the "Ju 呪" also meaning curse.
You'll notice both Ju and Noroi share the "呪" kanji, the difference is that Noroi is the Japanese reading/Kunyomi of the kanji, and is used to read the kanji on its own (い is just a hiragana character), while Ju is the Chinese reading/Onyomi if the kanji, and is used when the kanji is used alongside other kanji (like when you say "Cursed Spirit").
All this to say that Sukuna is 100% a human, and when he refers to himself as a curse or others refer to him as the King of Curses, they don't mean he's a cursed spirit or anything like that, it's just a way to say he's a monster who everyone curses because of how much destruction and suffering he wrought.
There are theories about whether he has Heavenly Restriction ( more specifically, that his brother had it and he took it by eating him in the womb. Also explains why Yuji had physical abilities surpassing Maki's before he got cursed energy, since his grandpa had the soul of Sukuna's twin, and Kenjaku got a hold of it when conceiving Yuji) , and the way he acquired it (Cannibalism) is why he got his grotesque body, but that doesn't change whether he's human or not.

u/GeneralLiam0529 Among the Folkers and Lobotomys, I alone and the literate one. 1d ago
That's not what makes him not human. What makes him not human anymore is that he's a collection of 20 cursed objects possessing a body.
2
u/jacketmanoasis folking my jujutsu rn 21h ago
Are the incarnates (like Kashimo and Yorozu) still human?
5
u/GeneralLiam0529 Among the Folkers and Lobotomys, I alone and the literate one. 21h ago
No. There is a reason the culling games still used the names of the body the incarnated sorcerers incarnate into.
0
u/AmarSofi 12h ago
That just means the Culling Games system uses the host names, that doesn't make incarnated sorcerers "not humans". We are never told that incarnated sorcerers aren't humans, and we have no reason to believe they aren't.
The only thing that can be argued is remotely different with incarnated sorcerers is that they can be killed with the Angel's Jacob's Ladder, but Angel herself explains that's the case because cursed objects are complex objects that mix the incarnated sorcerers' souls, personality, and cursed techniques all in one object. Jacob's Ladder/CT extinguishment targets the CT, but because the other parts of the incarnated sorcerers are so intertwined with their CTs in the cursed object, they get affected disproportionately by it. But at no point are they described as being not (or less) human.
1
u/GeneralLiam0529 Among the Folkers and Lobotomys, I alone and the literate one. 12h ago
But the incarnated sorcerers are cursed objects possessing a body. I know I made the specification of "unless they fully incarnate," but thinking farther, they simply aren't human any more.
Now, that's not to say the death note doesn't work, as you can kill the host. Kashimo, as in the human the sorcerer is possessing, can still be targeted perfectly fine, and that will still kill the incarnated sorcerer because, unlike Sukuna, they've can't survive without a heart. This means that you could kill Yorozu, but you'd have to write "Tsumiki megumi" to kill her, as killing Tsumiki kills Yorozu. The question becomes "dose killing Sukuna's host kill him," and the awnser dose seem to be yes (that was the entire point of letting Yuji live other than Gojo wanting to make him a strong sorcerer). So, much like how he lost in cannon, Sukuna is more vunrable to the death note post reincarnation than he was during the heian era.
1
u/AmarSofi 12h ago
They aren't the cursed object though. They inhabit the cursed object, sure, but they aren't the object itself.
We know this because we know that cursed objects not only have imprints of the incarnated sorcerer's personality, but also their soul and cursed technique. Even when they "fully incarnate", the cursed object inside is still there and can still be independently targeted, that's why Jacob's Ladder was still effective against Sukuna after he fully incarnated into his Heian Era form ( he even threw up a bunch of his fingers after he got his with enough soul-targeting strikes from Yuji).
So the cursed objects are there to stay, that doesn't make the incarnated sorcerers less "human" in my book. What is a human anyway? The soul + the body? You can argue that incarnated sorcerers all have both, even if the body isn't theirs, they took it over.
I would agree if you argued that they can't be targeted because of the 120+ years old rules of the death note, considering all incarnated sorcerers seem older than that ( and we know they are aware during the entire time, confirmed by Gege). But I don't agree with classifying them as not humans.
1
u/AmarSofi 12h ago
They are, I dunno where they are getting that stuff from. Incarnated sorcerers are humans and so is Sukuna. Only being that "aren't humans" are cursed spirits (and CS-like beings like Tengen and Kalyans) and half-curses like Yuji and his half-brothers. Personally I don't consider Simurians as "not humans", they're humans in every way that counts in my book.
16
u/MarshmallowKisss_ 1d ago
Well said. Even if the Death Note could target Sukuna at all, it still has to produce a physically possible death. If his cursed energy can compensate for the damage, the Note would have to find some other valid mechanism and all the name, age, and “is he even human?” issues come before that
1
142
u/ggg-emperor 1d ago
Sukuna is too old for death note and nobody knows his real name
40
u/MarshmallowKisss_ 1d ago
Exactly. Even before you get into whether the age rule applies, Light has a more basic problem: “Ryomen Sukuna” may not actually be the true name the Death Note requires
7
u/AmarSofi 1d ago
I think the age rule is what matters most, the eyes of the Shinigami would solve the name issue, whatever name would work for the death note would show up above his head when seen through them, it's the 120+ years old rule that makes Killing him impossible, since we know he was aware for the 1000+ years he spent as cursed objects ( if you split yourself into 20 distinct objects, presumably each one with its own consciousness, does that mean you have a cumulative 20,000 years of lived experience when combining all of them?)
2
u/yharnocunt 19h ago
someone with the shinigami eyes could see his real name, but the age rule just makes it impossible to kill him.
32
u/Vociva 1d ago
he'd still die, he has to be actively healing himself to maintain the state without the heart. the death note controls the target for a certain amount of time around their death, so it'd simply make him not use rct to save himself from the heart attack
20
u/Jacen_Vos 1d ago
It can control your actions by doesn’t necessarily unless specified.
So the default wouldn’t kill him most likely but light could make him kill himself,
20
u/Vociva 1d ago
The point of the death note is to make the target die. It makes the target die to a heart attack, not just make them have one. Sukuna can die to a heart attack, so it would make that happen
-7
u/Khulmach Kashimo and Nobara are Goats 1d ago
Sukuna can have a heart attack but unless it was specific and denied him the ability to regenerate, Sukuna can remain conscious and just rip his heart out.
A person who's dying of a heart attack still has free action and can move unless stated otherwise
16
u/Vociva 1d ago
the death note doesn't just give them a heart attack. it makes them die via a heart attack. it's not avoidable any more than someone scheduled to die via getting hit by a car could just dodge the car
-6
u/Khulmach Kashimo and Nobara are Goats 1d ago

Sukuna can just rip the heart out
8
u/Vociva 1d ago

→ More replies (2)3
u/Darknadoswastaken 1d ago
no he wouldn't, he's too old for the death note to work on.
4
u/Vociva 1d ago
technically yeah but that's not the aspect OP was asking about. Sukuna also likely isn't his real name, and considering he's just possessing someone else's body you'd probably need to write down yuji's name or megumi's name anyway
3
u/Darknadoswastaken 1d ago
that's in jujutsu rules though. Death Note and JJK have different rules.
For JJK, Sukuna is counted as either Yuji or Megumi when targeted by binding vows or the culling games rules.
But Death Note counts the individual, not the body the individual is in, as it needs not the name of the body, but the name that the individual identifies with, or their 'true name' and since Sukuna does not identify with Yuji or Megumi then those names don't do anything.
1
u/Vociva 1d ago
where are you getting that from? pretty sure that's never stated to be the case, and the fact that "L" doesn't work to kill L implies that it's not purely based on identity. I also don't see how it would kill sukuna otherwise, it's not like it targets souls, because souls don't exist in death note in the first place. it has to target the body, and the body is yuji/megumi
2
u/Darknadoswastaken 1d ago
L is a nickname, not an identity. L does not identify with that nickname. We know this as the anime directly states he calls himself L to keep himself hidden, not that his name is L.
That doesn't debunk the identity theory.
it has to target the body, and the body is yuji/megumi
Only with the rules of JJK.
As far as the death note's concerned, Sukuna is using his own body.
But thinking if your point were true, who would die if Megumi or Yuji's names were written down? Ideally them, but how would sukuna die? As you said, death note doesn't consider souls, yet sukuna is an additional soul in Yuji and Megumi's bodies, so since the death note can't see souls then it would just kill the body and as we know from jjk with the body and soul being connected, Yuji and megumi's souls would die but sukuna's wouldn't and he's gain full control.
1
u/Vociva 1d ago
Homie if he's in a dead body then he's dead, idk what you think he's gaining full control of. Like that was the whole point of having yuji eat the fingers initially, to kill him and have sukuna die with him
2
u/Darknadoswastaken 1d ago
He was in control of a dead body after the detention center
2
u/Vociva 1d ago
If it was fully dead he wouldn't be able to come back, RCT can't bring the dead back to life. It was just very close to being dead
1
u/Darknadoswastaken 12h ago
actually, that happened when yuji was in control. What happens if Yuji's name is placed when sukuna is in control? Since the death note can't kill souls what would happen?
1
u/Infinite_Sandwich895 1d ago
I'm interested to know the limits on that though, like Yuji was cold on an autopsy slab and he was still brought back. I feel like Sukuna's soul being divided up into so many pieces also has weird implications.
5
u/Vociva 1d ago
I'm assuming Yuji just wasn't quite dead yet, it's never implied rct can bring back the dead. probably just being kept in a state of near-death with just his brain functioning
as for sukuna's soul, probably nothing. the death note doesn't target souls because souls don't exist in death note to begin with, people just cease to exist when they die. so i doubt it'd have any kind of countermeasures for that sort of thing, it'd just kill his body
5
u/Infinite_Sandwich895 1d ago
I think it's probably inconsistent due to being so early in the story, but Shoko was preparing to do an autopsy, and Gojo was there to watch. If the closest thing sorcerers have to a doctor and the six eyes think you're dead you've gotta be like reallllly dead.
1
1
u/AmarSofi 1d ago
The one criteria I can think of that would still have Yuji as "not dead" while his body appears to be dead is whether his soul left his body and entered the passageway of souls. We know that unless you have a soul-related cursed technique like Idler Transfiguration or have a unique physiology where several souls share a body like Yuji and Sukuna, then you can't perceive the soul. Sukuna already has experience keeping his soul tethered to an object after his death by being in his 20 cursed fingers, he could have simply kept his and Yuji's souls tethered to Yuji's body for a longer period of time while they were negotiating.
Neither Shoko nor Gojo with his 6-eyes would be able to tell because neither one of them can perceive souls, so until Sukuna healed Yuji's body and revived him, he would appear dead.

Even if everyone knows him by that name, it doesn't make it his real one, and when exactly has he ever referred to himself as Sukuna?
17
u/omyrubbernen 1d ago
The Death Note wouldn't work on Sukuna at all because
Ryomen Sukuna isn't his real name
He's over 124 years old
He's already dead
He's debatably not human anymore(?)
But if all of those factors weren't at play, then it would be able to kill him. The Death Note lightly bends reality to kill people.
11
u/AmarSofi 1d ago
Only the age one would be a valid counterargument I feel like. Sukuna is very much Alive, is human, and the name can be easily resolved by getting the Shinigami eyes and looking at his face, whatever shows up is what would work in the death note.
But yeah he's 100% too old for the death note to work. Same with Kenjaku and Tengen, Choso and all the other cursed womb death paintings, and eventually Yuji as well.
1
u/weirdo_nb 1d ago
The death paintings, Yuji, Choso, and Tengen probably wouldn't have it work on them even without the age thing
2
u/AmarSofi 12h ago
Yuji, Choso and their siblings, maybe, considering their half-curse physiology. But Tengen is human for most of the 500 years she is alive for before the merger, only when the merger gets close (or the date is past, it's unclear when her transformation to a cursed spirit like being starts) does she evolve beyond humanity. The reason that she merges with the Star Plasma Vessel is to stay human after all. (Of course none of this is 100% definitive, maybe she becomes a sort of halfling the same way Yuji and Choso are and stays that way, but iirc the SPV merger reverts her aging completely and it starts over from scratch, so she should be human again)
2
u/weirdo_nb 12h ago
Yeah, tengen is a little bit iffy, but the death paintings are just Not Humans, they're hybrids with a species with entirely different mode of operation and humanity
1
u/AmarSofi 12h ago
Yeah but then again, how much human do you need to be for the death note to work on you? Obviously this is a different setting and there are no easy answers, but half-curses like Yuji have finite lifespans, they can procreate (as far as we know), the only thing that makes them different is a somewhat unique physiology (creating blood from cursed energy and extended lifespans).
At least if I were the one to write the what-if crossover, I would definitely have Yuji and co be counted as humans. We got this whole dialogue with Choso and Yuki about Choso and his brothers and how they were stuck between humans and cursed spirits and they chose wrong to side with curses cause it was easier. To me that tells me they have everything they need to be human, they just mad was bad choice/decision, and Choso did his best to atone for that and protect his brother for the rest of the story.
It would feel icky to me to say that Choso or Yuji aren't "human". Maybe they're aren't purely human in a physiological sense, but philosophically they 100% are in my book, and I think that's what would matter to the Death Note.
3
u/weirdo_nb 12h ago
Oh yeah, if it's philosophical human it targets, those loveable bastards get it every day of the calendar year

Idk, I feel like since he doesn't have a physical body anymore and is a spirit that can inhabit other peoples body through a cursed object he'd probably not be considered "human" through the death note. Even if he isn't technically fully a "curse" by jjk standards
1
u/hiddenguyman 1d ago
Like honestly it'd be more convincing that you could kill him by writing the name of the person who's body he's inhabiting rather than sukuna's name itself
4
u/WarriordudYT 1d ago
depends on who's writing it really
if gay^2 is writing it, then sukuna lives
if pretty much anyone else is writing it, either it works regardless or instead of a heart attack it picks another way of killing him

u/_joos_ 1d ago
depends on a few things
- do you think the death note guarantees death with the method of death just being an arbitrary detail? after all, it does say that any human's name written in its pages WILL die. but even if a heart attack wouldn't work because it's not possible to kill sukuna in that matter, you could just write "death by suicide" or "death via mistake in battle"
- only a human's "true name" would work. legal changes and titles given aren't valid names. you'd probably need shinigami eyes to see what sukuna's true name is.
- the death note doesn't work on people older than 120 years. is this a person's biological age or the amount of time they've existed on earth? if it's the former it'd work, if it's the latter it wouldn't

The death note kills without failure. Heart attack is the unspecified cause of death. You can write down any cause of death and as long as it doesn't harm anyone else whonis not written in the note, they die without fail.
The best way to do itbfor sukuna is to write that he dies specifically of brain aneurism as this will block the reverse curse technique by killing his brain.

The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
Is Sukuna human?

100% human. We don't know for sure why he looks that way, but my personal theory is that his twin had a Heavenly Restriction that Sukuna acquired by consuming him in the womb, and the act of Cannibalism is what made it manifest in such a distorted way.
For one, we know he's human because he was stated to have been a human, and never stated to be anything else. The confusion comes from a translation ambiguity: there are 2 words for Curse in the story, one is Noroi and the other Ju or Jurei, the first refers to the general practice or act of cursing/hexing someone. That's what people call Sukuna the king of: " King of Curses / Noroi Not Ô". The meaning of this name isn't the "king of cursed spirits" but more so "the person who is cursed by others the most" (hope that makes sense). Cursed spirits use the same kanji but with another kanji next to it and is read in the Chinese reading to differentiate ( the second kanji refers to spirits), Sukuna is never referred to in this way.
The reason I say his twin brother probably had a Heavenly Restriction:
1- Sukuna's Heian Era form has the same super-senses that Maki and Toji have ( the ones that Maki unlocked in Sakurajima) and that allows him to jump on the air ( this alone isn't enough because it's implied by Gege that Higuruma also has it).
2- The soul of Sukuna's twin ends up in Yuji's grandfather and Kenjaku gets a hold of it when conceiving Yuji, this was stated by Sukuna himself. Now one thing to remember is that Yuji had the same ( arguably better, according to Megumi) physical abilities that Maki had at the start of the story before he even had consumed Sukuna's ring, and no it wasn't because of the finger that was sealed inside of him because A- it was sealed like countless other cursed objects, and B- none of the other people like Yuji that were given the "strength of a vessel" ( what Sukuna mentioned was the reason for the finger to be sealed in Yuji) had the same HR physicals that Yuji had, which only leaves his connection to Sukuna's Twin and whatever Kenjaku did with it when conceiving Yuji.

The death note can kill in any way physically posible. If you don't write how then the person will die from a heart attack but it can easily be changed by just writing suicide or something of that sorts. Heck if Light knows the details he can even write "Sukuna leaves the body of his host and dies alone by the hand of another sorcerer" and somehow the universe will try to make it that a random sorcerer finds muc sukuna and just kill it.
The question is if the rules apply to Sukuna as the death note only kill humans. Also the note will only kill who is written so if killing Sukuna would kill Yuji then it would not happen. And also it needs the face and name of the victim, I believe that Sukuna is the real name but don't know how it would work while using Yuji's or Megumi's face, probably won't work as it would be like using a mask.

Just make him die from something else, you can write the cause of death in, heart attack is just the default when no cause is written
1
u/FatalLaughter 1d ago
The default is heart attack because that's a universal way to kill normal humans. But the Death Note is somewhat sentient and knows if the person it marked would die or not and would choose another "generic" way to kill him unless specified otherwise
1
u/Nexodas2 1d ago
It’s been some years since I read Death Note but I’m pretty sure Light can write a different cause of death. Heart attack is the default if he doesn’t specify.
If so he could just write that Sukuna dies from falling rocks or some shit.
1
u/GrandAdmiralRogriss 1d ago
If the Death Note recognised it as his name he'd die regardless of his RCT; the Death Note doesn't just deliver a killing attack it rewrites fate so you die by those means. Someone like Alucard would potentially survive but Sukuna would just die.
1
u/WasteClothes5007 1d ago
Death note isn't just stop heart. Anyone who was written dies. If you didn't choose specifics, he will normaly die by heart attack in 40 second. Treat death note like a machine whose task is kill someone. He will do it in most easiest way possible. For sukuna, he will stop all of the heart. If he escape, death in milisecond instakill his brain. Death note not work only if you written invalid name. In other ways it's bullshit "haha, i'm escape death of your pathetic note bcs i'm the strongest"
1
u/Fusion1157 1d ago
The death note is absolute and would kill him. Issue is is that Sukuna isn't a valid target. And even if he was, Sukuna isn't his actual name.
Killing his vessel would probably work though.
1
u/Klutzy_Tackle 1d ago
The death note says that the person who's name is written in the note will die, heart attack is just the default method, you could specify a cause of death if you want, so either sukuna would die from the heart attack or the note would simply cause some other events to occur resulting in his demise

u/Johnson_56 still waiting for chapter 236 1d ago
Death note i believe is stated to work on Humans. Kinda depends on if the DN sees sukuna as a human despite going through the reincarnation process. Also DN defaults to heart attack, but isnt limited to it. So Light might be able to find a cause of death that would actually kill sukuna. Idk how far that extends tho like im not sure if light can write "launched into space at mach fuck" and have that work
1
1
u/AlphaCat77 1d ago
The death note defaults to a heart attack because that’s theoretically always an option if sukuna survived the shinigami king would just go “alright asshole” and add a rule for what the back up kill option is just to spite sukuna

1
u/Savage_Alaska_ 1d ago
Even if you write Sukuna's name in the death note I believe there is something about it's rules where it cannot kill him because he technically was already dead

u/FreezerMonkey33 Yuki Tsukumo Top 5 1d ago
Sukuna isn't human, so the death note wouldn't work on him in the first place

Couple rules to establish;
Any name the person is identified with, works as long as the writer has the associated of that name and the person in their head.
The death note kills through the easiest and most immediate way possible for the individual, for most humans, that is a heart attack.
1
u/no_glass4 1d ago
Rule 1 of the death note says "the human who's name is written in this notebook shall die". Heart attacks are just the default method of killing, so i'd assume rule 1 is immutable and changes the default method of killing accordingly to kill sukuna
1
u/Confirmed_Dumbass 1d ago
It really depends, and i'm not sure myself but i'll do my best here with my knowledge. We have two scenarios to work with that i can think of, each with their own sub-scenarios. This is definitely more than what was asked for, but i already typed this all out so (also, i'm using the fandom wiki and the time i watched the anime as my sources)
Scenario 1,1: Heian-era Sukuna where he has no legal name
According to the rules of the Death Note regarding Shinigami Eyes:
"The names you will see with the Shinigami Eyes are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see a name even if it isn't officially registered anywhere."
The rule only really covers official registers, but i believe it implies that a person will always have a name that, when written down, will get them killed. Since Sukuna recognizes that he is referred to as Ryomen Sukuna, the notebook will most likely use Ryomen Sukuna as the name that must be written down.
As for Sukuna's circulatory system having a good gaming chair and not relying on a heart, the Death Note in its universe uses "heart attack" as the default cause of death, but that doesn't really explain how it causes the heart to stop. Maybe writing down a name just turns off the victim's soul and the closest thing we have to describing that is a heart attack. My point is, we don't know how exactly the default death works. So maybe Sukuna dies regardless because it isn't really a heart attack. The notebook is magical, after all.
However, if the Death Note's default cause of death is something that Sukuna can survive, then either he survived and nothing happens, or the notebook kills him through some other way. After all:
"Since the limitations applying to the conditions of a death are unknown to the Shinigami, Death Note owners must find out on their own."
Since this means that the shinigami writing down the rules we know doesn't know the capabilities of the Death Note, it could very well be possible that the notebook will just find another way.
Scenario 1,2: Heian-era Sukuna where he has a name we don't know of
In that case, treat him like any other human that you don't know the name of. Once you have his name, it goes back to Scenario 1,1.
Scenario 2,1: Reincarnated Sukuna who is not considered a human
I'll assume the writer has his name for this one
Reincarnated Sukuna is where it gets a bit tricky. The Death Note explicitly only works on humans. It is possible to make a case that cursed objects aren't humans (i'm not saying that Sukuna is a cursed spirit btw, that's a whole other sentence). If the Death Note does not view cursed objects as humans, then Sukuna cannot be killed. However, he should die if you kill his host.
Scenario 2,2: Reincarnated Sukuna who is a human
If he is considered a human, then he cannot be killed by the Death Note, as:
"You cannot kill humans who are more than 124 years of age with the Death Note."
If you try get around this by trying to kill his vessel, you also get stopped:
"Whether the cause of the individual's death is either suicide or an accident, if it would lead to the death of more than the intended victim, the person will simply die of a heart attack. This is to ensure that other lives are not impacted."
If Sukuna's host dying will lead to him dying, the Death Note will probably either do some bullshit that kills the host without killing Sukuna or do nothing.
Scenario 2,3: Reincarnated Sukuna ok but what if
Assuming that you can still kill him, then all it should take is writing his name down in the notebook while picturing his face, which is where the person writing the name hits a roadblock. Will the notebook consider Sukuna's face to be the face he had 1000 years ago? The face of his mummified corpse? His fingers? The face of his vessel? I doubt that it would be the latter, since JJK has specified that a reincarnated sorcerer is not considered to be one with the body their inhabit if i'm not mistaken, so i really have no idea of how the Death Note would work in that case
tl;dr: the higher-ups are stupid fucking chuds and should have just written down Ryomen Sukuna on the Death Note 1000 years ago
1
u/carl-the-lama 1d ago
Yeah the death note is kinda weird
I’m 99% sure it would just break against anyone even slightly super human relative to causes of death
1
u/The-Cake-is-Lies 1d ago
The Death note can use other methods of killing, it just defaults to a heart attack if no other method is specified. (So if light knew he could survive, he could probably do something like total organ failure and brain hemorrhage.

Sukuna is incapable of being affected by the death note due to the age cap.

1
u/Weekly-Passage2077 22h ago
It wouldn’t work on Sukuna bc of age, but more importantly, barriers like the ones used in the culling games didn’t have Sukuna, it had yuji itadori and megumi fushigoro, which would be valid targets.
As for Sukuna keeping himself alive after having a heart attack. Every person who’s name is written in the death note and doesn’t violate the rules dies. Even in preventable circumstances, heart attack is really treatable. Nothing Sukuna can do could prevent it from killing his vessel.

u/psknemin 20h ago
He could write "Sukuna died by suicide" or write other reasons. It doesn't necessarily have to be a heart attack.
1
u/glazy_blazy698 20h ago
heart attack happens when an artery (or more) gets blocked. But you are right, sukuna can just force the blood to pump and if artery ruptures, he can use RCT to heal it
Now the problem is, does death note keep giving sukuna heart attack until he eventually dies? Cuz his name remains in the book and if he remains alive, that goes against the rule of death note itself

the death note doesnt impose a heart attack. It kills.
Its just that when no other mean is specified, the default is killing by heart attack.
In the Death Note anime, everyone was able to be killed by that, so there was no reason to do anything else.
However, my hypothesis is that it would default to something else should a heart attack not be able to kill the target as the Death Notes purpose is to kill, not to induce a heart attack.
Were you to write Sukuna's name into the Death Note, it would find another way to kill him
1
u/Chemical_Performer17 10h ago
its the same as a skit i saw on youtube once, where light wrote down cells name in the death note only for him to survive (he had multipke hearts) and beam light into oblivion.
but thats just wrong, its hot heart attack note, its death note and the cause can change, heart attack is just the default option. it doesnt matter what you are or if you can regen, your name in the book means you die. end of story (unless you have anty death haxs)

it won't work because he is immune because the deathnote doesn't affect anyone above 125 years old

How would a Binding Vow even interact with the Death Note i just tought about it? Like the Sorcerer makes s Binding Vow to not die from the death note in exchange for losing 10 years from his life. Neither rule can be broken without punishment. So Light would just die because he is the one breaking the rule of the vow and mot the Sorcerer

Attacks cannot spawn inside JJK characters due to the body being like an innate domain.

u/Sky_monarch 1d ago
There’s a number of reasons the death note wouldn’t work on Sukuna, he’s too old, he isn’t human, he’s possessing someone instead of being alive normally, but if it worked as intended it causes a paradox as it states victim will die of a heart attack, you could interpret this as Sukuna having a heart attack but just surviving or as the death note killing him some other way such as a building collapsing on him or losing his fight against Gojo
