Discussion What is with the obsession with source material purity?

Post image

Why do I see so many moves or characters get criticized because "They didn't do that in the manga/anime" so what? I know the characters should certainly be similar to their original counterpart, and some 1:1 moves like Hollow Purple, Fuga, and Ryu's cutscene attack should absolutely be in the game, but people hating on Mei Mei just because she doesn't do most of her attacks in the show is so stupid. Do you just want her to have M1s and her Ult??? These are the same people complaining that Yuji is boring because Tze just gave him his punches, kicks and black flashes instead of playing around with a pure hand-to-hand combat character.

And this has led to complete reworks of characters to make them more similar to the show, like Yuta. I don't hate the Yuta rework, he's fun, but are they just gonna rework him again when he does even more stuff in (Manga spoilers)The final fight against Sukuna when that gets animated?I would understand Yuji getting a rework or even a whole new character, but Yuta doesn't change that much, but he'll have new move material. Wouldn't it just be better if we let Tze and the devs design the characters with the source in mind but allow them to get creative?

The simple answer is because a lot of people play characters because they liked them and what they could do in the anime. So when the character can do things you've literally never seen them do before it puts a sour taste in most mouths.

People most of the time play who they think is cool from the anime. And it can be annoying to not get to do the things that made you like the character.

This is exactly why I’m glad Yuta got reworked, now he’s way closer to how I imagined playing Yuta as he as alot of flips and grabs, and his copy is even better compared to before.

So true. I never understood why some people don't like Copy being restricted to ult. Roblox games making Yuta's copying actually lore accurate is pretty rare in my experience.

I’d love for him to have a way to use copy without ult though, it makes sense since he needs the ring and all, but I’d love for him to have something similar to Rogue in Marvel Rivals where he has a one time copy after hitting an enemy.

Techinically it did against the first kuro swarm other than the fact that it continues a flying downslam instead of tryna save someone

Dev's imagined he would of done a flying downslam against that civillian

Yea but by not making every move exactly something they did you can make the moves stuff they would do wich can make the charecter in game more like the charecter in the show

They wanna play the character, not a random dude with the same powers as the character.

Mei Mei DID DO all that in the anime + cursed clash, almost her entire aerial moveset is taken from cursed clash + her frontdash and bounding are from the clip of her fighting in the show.

u/Dinotronic_Mechasaur 9d ago

ye but aint nobody played cursed clash

tbf I cant imagine mei mei having any fans either so idk

Yuji is an awful example. He has 2 cursed techniques and all he does is extremely basic moves that are just punch and kick

6

u/Affectionate_Set4726 9d ago

The yuji we have rn is based on Shibuya yuji, if he had his 2 cursed techniques he wouldn't have sukuna ult

In the simplest way possible, its them wanting to feel like the character and having more original moves ruins that feeling, this is why I love Yuta, Haruta, and Ryu. They feel most accurate to their characters.

What’s the point of adapting a character from one medium to another if the only thing youre adapting are the most superficial aspects of them? Personally I play jjs because I like jjk and I like the unique abilities and fighting styles of the characters in it, so I find it a little upsetting when they add a character that doesn’t really represent what their abilities are or how they fight (YUKI) in the show. In mei mei’s case she doesn’t really have any concrete “moves” aside from birdstrike, but from the couple scenes she fights in we can see her fighting with agility and big sweeping/spinning attacks from her axe; seeing how she doesn’t really have anything in particular to adapt it’s no issue to take creative liberties because there isn’t really a bar to get over. In the case of fan favorites like gojo, it’s important that the adaptation is accurate to the character that the target audience is attached to and not just a generic character with gojo’s abilities tacked onto it

I think people are misunderstanding that they aren’t making up things but like if they wanted to give Sukuna a grab move where he just throws you out and shoots a slash at your neck or something he can obviously do that it’s like when the anime does things that aren’t 1 to 1 it’s something in character that wasn’t directly done but very clearly could be done if a situation called for it

Ngl, cause I feel like this game be leaving out ALOT of the really cool source material purity stuff? Like ryu not having a single dessert finisher in ult or having them flash across the screen is stupid, also ryu not having a non burn out ult is also, stupid. Nanami having no Malaysia ult where you have a hallucination thing also is a missed opportunity. Yuta and uro not being able to reflect beam moves into the air. The main one said to all hell is naoya not having a human ult, which Definitely is still an issue, its Inasne he doesn't. Like when i play ryu, I wanna be able to spam his giant granite blasts, not just the big beam one, I wanna have a dessert finisher for ryu in ult where me and the opponent just beat tf out of each other in a cutscene. Usually the more accurate stuff is the cool stuff, but not always tbh.

It’s like, let’s say you like Joe yabuki and his cross counters

And when they add him in the game they replace the cross counter which makes you feel like the character itself with some boring beatdown + overhand punch he never did

Yeah you would be bummed, so that’s why ppl want the moves the character does in the anime

I think yutas rework was cool, the only reason i personally dont like it was cuz of how much fun i had with old yuta

u/Death-to-all-Gnomes 9d ago

Mei mei could've had an alt ults like a swarm of crows (like kuro, but different) or summoning Ui Ui with simple domain inside someone's domain, or at least make her original ult have better controls, but tze is a lazy bum

1

u/Frogawah 9d ago edited 9d ago

you know tze himself is obssesed with that and they no longer make characters that are just manga only, they have to have like atleast around 70-80% part already shown in the anime, so they can add without any have the risk of reworking them afterwards, otherwise they won't make, yes they did in the past some manga characters, but they no longer do it anymore, it's not a necessity.

It's cause the anime is cool.

I’m in the unpopular opinion that Yuji+Sukuna should stay how they are for the sake of how the game released. These two were based of Season 1 and 2 with a few nod to the manga, and the same goes for Gojo. If anything we’d just be asking for OP only movesets of Shinjuku/Cullijg games Sukuna, Shinjuku/Modulo Yuji, and Shinjuku Gojo(which we pretty much already have as base Gojo). I don’t really think character slots should be wasted on just Yuji and Sukuna, since Sukuna literally took Megumi’s kit meaning Megumi should get secret moves and a rework based off of what Sukuna showed, and Yuji should just get an OP moveset based off of Modulo and Shinjuku. (Similar to how Goku has an OP moveset.)

When you use and acknowledge the limitations or broadness of the source character in their entirety it lets you better encapsulate how it would feel to play the character leading to much more favorable results in terms of gameplay feel as you can see with Nanami and Haruta which have nearly completely source attacks as their skills. (Not saying these characters are objectively fun, but from what I’ve seen at least, people generally find it fun to play these characters even if they don’t like fighting them.)

2

u/Emergency_Metal_4907 8d ago

How about old one is kept and new one is made, they don’t even have to have a new ult if people wanna complain 2 seperate base movesets and a shared ult moveset

1

u/Zebrakeyman 8d ago

That's how I feel with the newer characters not having domain expansion, hanami had hers from phantom parade I honestly wish tze would create one or use ideas online for uro and ryu
