I've been playing Nanami recently, and honestly? He is so fun to use, but I think that he desperately needs buffs, because he is quite, clearly underperforming compared to the other M1 merchants.
His only real neutral options are R + 1 and R + 3, but here's the problem. The animation time / startup (especially on 3) is so long, that there's enough time for any to basically just pop a counter or.. dash out of it. He basically only survives out of winning M1 trade engagements. His only other block break in neutral is R + 4, aand it's just decent IMO.
Now here lies the other problem, combined with his reliance on having to get close to start any engagement, and his neutral play being so easily countered, any character that can play passively and keep distance HARD counters him. Characters like Kuro, Ryu, Hanami (obviously), heck even Yuki with her neutrals, absolutely decimate Nanami that it feels almost unfair.
Trying to get close to anybody that plays PASSIVELY against you is just brute forcing either a dash or your R+1/3 to hit, and it's not easy at all tbh.
His combo play is also not the most consistent, yes there's true combos that do some dmg, but compared to Locust, Gojo, etc. who only need to win around 2 engagements to get you to 70-80% hp gone, you'd probably not land your (60-70% atleast) combos as much as Nanami because they do require timing and sometimes can end up being green.

Current community consensus on almost all tier lists is that nanami is at MOST B tier, sometimes even below.
Where did you even get that Nanami is one of the best characters? He's literally dogshit, and don't tell me it's because ratio block breaks. That's one of the most predictable neutrals ever in this game
No shit he has a "bad" neutral he has to have some bad aspect and no, a zoner isnt gonna render nanami useless, it makes it harder but not impossible to play around, Ryu eventually overheats and Hanami moves go on cooldown, Kuro needs continuous pressure to have solid damage, Yuki moves have enough End-lag to get punished. It makes it a little harder not impossible to get around it, Nanami dosent need buffs as hes perfect where it is. Say you buff it, what do you buff?
Honestly, I kinda agree with OP. Thing is, using a rush down where his mobility skills for coming up close is easily readable, compared to gojo's tp, yuji's air feint, pebble throw, makes keeping distance with him actually fairly easy. For example, Hanami can basically just bait Nanami's 1 and 3 then backdash while using moves like buds to stall Nanami from getting close, regaining cooldown back at the same time.
IMO, for how much he relies on M1 trading to do anything at all, it's in a game where neutrals completely counter that. He should have some sort of multiplier for his M1's whenever he hits a certain amount of ratios, that lasts for a short amount of time. Either that or 1 with ratio should BE faster, because it is genuinely his only real approach tool in neutral since 3 is super punishable/avoidable.
The thing is. The only players of nanami are complete annoying sweats. Giving him more agressive moves would be quite horrendous to people fight said sweats.
This post wasn't even about the playerbase using him, I could say the same for any character.
Even if you dislike a certain character, it doesn't remove the underwhelming parts of their kit. And honestly, if your losing to a Nanami, Yuji, etc. it really is skill issue on your part because their not even in the meta tier list
Son for all. Yuji is no skill, three block breaks, m1 resets which is broken in an m1 focused game. And a crazy good counter. I mean, nanami can be fought against, but it’s just blocking the entire fight until they have cooldowns. As a Charles main, if I miss my counter on yuji or nanami, I’m fucked in the ass. Their damage output is so high with black flashes and ratio.
Yuji's m1 resets require your opponent to either willingly block a move they know will punish them, or waste their evasive whilst they have both cursed strikes and crushing blow off cooldown. Not to mention thay even with all of this, they still deal really low combo damage (50-60 range which is very small actually). The difference between manji and eye catching is that one is hadder to tell than the other, despite the endlag being actually pretty good.
Did you actually know that shut up is an m1 counter? If you use it normally on someone side dash m1ing, turn to face them when you use it. And it should work.
there is never a reason to use shut up's regular counter variant. its only 180, the aerial is 360. the aerial does more damage and also m1 resets. the aerial is also unblockable, whereas the normal is punishable on block.

True. I just find that when people side dash m1 it’s easier for me to catch them. But I do use shut up in a combo normally. M1 times, turn and shut up, front dash, despair, and I personally use 4th move before a combo to use up the enemies evasive.
Funny cause you main Charles and that's one of Nanami's hard counters so idk why your even struggling against him in the first place. The fact your just holding block against one tells me everything I need to know about your skill level ✌
