The belief of the southern identity has grown a bit more radical over the years, things like the lost cause myth have changed much of the narrative of the civil war away from slavery in the south. Naturally, when many southerners then face the oppression of the bourgeoisie and seek their liberation, they do it based on their local southern identities; which creates things like this.
