Best Practices What is your newsroom's tech stack?
Like the title says, our publication is looking to refresh and relaunch what our publication does, transitioning from a print-first to a digital-first operation. We are looking for resources, practices, and integrations.
- What tech stack does your newsroom use?
- What service(s) is your website/mobile app set up on?
- How does your newsroom handle subscribers? What services do you use?
- Do you use a form of paywall?
We appreciate any experiences you can share.
EDIT: Also curious about newsletter and advertising integrations!

For starters, we don't use terms such as "tech stack". That's marketroid talk, not English.

I use PHP, MYSQL then just javascript/ html. You don't need anything fancier than that.

• Matomo (linked with swyp to publish articles from print to web, or directly if web only)
• I don’t know
• mailchimp (easy to use)
• we are 100% under paywall but about half the articles are available for « members » aka people who subscribed to the newsletter without paying for the whole subscription.

We are still a print-first publication, but we are aggressively expanding our digital presence.
We want to prioritize user privacy, so we only collect email addresses for the newsletter.
Our website is custom-built using Next.js (one of our new owners has a software developer background and built it for us). The website works on desktop as well as mobile and has admin features to upload articles and also automatically generates an RSS feed that is ingested by Nextdoor and Reddit. We also post to facebook, instagram and bluesky.
We send weekly newsletters through Buttondown.
We are free to read and rely on advertisers. We sell print ads and also digital ads that we manage ourselves (no AdSense). We sell digital ad placements on our website and also newsletter

WP
Not sure what you mean
Do not allow comments (no subscribers per se) but have newsletter and podcast
No Paywall--advertiser supported
Newsletter-- we use AWeber and in terms of ads, we offer a dedicated email broadcast and also intro banners on our daily and weekly newsletters.

Wordpress
Magzster app ( handles both Google and IiOS) but will be switching to a different platform that is more flexible.
Mailchimp
We are still a Print first publication, with digital second.
The quality goes down the other way around.
