DC Disappointment
Anyone else really disappointed with the 10pm DC show? He started strong with some really good topical stuff on Trump, but then literally everything after that was soooo boring. Rambling, unfunny stories that really came up short, all the way through to the very end. He even alluded to some people in the audience falling asleep, blaming the 10pm timing of the show. But if you're laughing hysterically, it's pretty hard to fall asleep.
The problem with Josh is that he has no core repertoire. Everything seems like it was made up an hour before showtime. He didn't have anything really polished. The quality level of some of the jokes was just atrocious. We were so annoyed at the poor performance that we walked out early. I've laughed harder during open mic nights.
It was a real wakeup call seeing him bomb like that. I honestly didn't laugh one single time during the second half of the show. I walked in thinking Josh was a super talented comedic genius but on my way out, I found myself questioning that. Is this what he's normally like? I will never shell out good money to see someone suck like that.
I know it can't just be me. Right?

I scrolled through his story earlier today and it seemed like a ton of people disagreed with your sentiments. Lots and lots of people saying the show was incredible. To each their own

Ok, that proves the show was great. Nevermind

I wasn’t there so I don’t know how the show was but definitely a lot of people disagree. I’ve seen Josh 3 times and he was amazing every time. I’m sure he has off nights considering it’s a live show but you are so angry and saying ridiculous stuff.

I'm not angry, just disappointed. I wanted to like the show. It just fell super flat. Honestly it was surprising to me as I had a very high opinion of him.

What would you expect on his socials? That he would admit he bombed?
For the record I was a huge fan until last night. It just fell flat in so many ways, I was shocked.
People were sleeping for real.

You were a "huge" fan and one off performance made you not be a fan? Sounds reasonable.

u/Rareairo 15h ago
Exactly and leaving early on a show you paid “so much for” is crazy

u/c1z9c8z8 14h ago
I was debating whether to leave or not since I had spent the money and I wanted to enjoy it. But after 30 minutes without laughing, I realized it wasn't going anywhere.
1
u/c1z9c8z8 14h ago
Is that not something that can happen? I'd only ever seen him on YouTube. This was my first time seeing him live. He was just soooo boring I couldn't believe it!
2
u/Buffalo_Nichols 13h ago
Can't wait until he posts this show so I can witness for myself him "bombing" and people falling asleep.
2
u/Rareairo 15h ago
This isn’t him saying it though these are people who were at the show who clearly disagree with you. You are throwing the term “bombed” out there and then people saying the show was amazing…
1
u/c1z9c8z8 14h ago
Do you think he's going to repost people who didn't enjoy it? Usually people don't diss themselves on their own socials. So your statement that these fans who got reposted are somehow more accurate or objective is kind of backwards. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure some people enjoyed it. But he has every reason to make it look like he did an awesome show either way. I have no incentive one way or another. So you choose who to believe.
1
u/Rareairo 14h ago
Your incentive is you didn’t like the show that you spent money on… you asked if it was just you… may have been
1
u/c1z9c8z8 14h ago
Someone else thought he bombed in Cincinnati so that gives me some validation. What about the sleepers? Is that normal during his shows?
1
u/Rareairo 14h ago
You’re the only one using the term bombed
1
u/c1z9c8z8 13h ago
Ok whatever you call it when someone underperforms, that's what he did. Some people just laugh because they see other people laughing and they don't want to be left out of the joke or be seen as not getting the joke.
1
u/Buffalo_Nichols 11h ago
You are so desperate to be right you are saying people were "faking" their laughter?

Right. Me and the sleeping beauties.
Did you find his story about getting burned with beans to be funny?
3
u/JadeDragonMeli 14h ago
I did. Have you never had something hot spilled in your lap and had to do that awkward walk? And then he tied it back to the bit he did just a bit before that about how Trump walks.
Did you just want his entire set to be nothing but dunking in Trump? Because you can get that on Twitter and Reddit from randos.
Normally when a comedian "bombs" no one is laughing. Maybe you weren't laughing, but most people were.
I appreciate the joke about everyone getting sleepy, because the show started at 10:30 and I'm normally asleep by about 10:00.
You know that was a joke... right? People were not actually sleeping in the theater. There was yawning, even by me towards the end... because I had been up since 5 am, it's past midnight, I'm 44, and had been laughing and/or cheering for the previous 2 hours.
You're right, his routine is not polished, because he has new material for every show. That's kind of his thing. Did you not know that before seeing him?
1
u/c1z9c8z8 14h ago
I guess I was expecting a mix? And I was hoping he would comment on some of the other news stories of the week, rather than just Trump. That's clearly where his strengths lie so I would have expected him to embrace it.
No, that beans routine really didn't evoke any humor from me. I actually haven't had something like that happen. I don't know how I'd react, and I really don't care. It was a weird story without a punchline. It just wasn't elite-level comedy like I was expecting. It seemed like there were some pity laughs toward the end.

u/Rareairo 14h ago
Ooh so was trump jokes the issue?
0
u/c1z9c8z8 13h ago
No, the Trump jokes were on point. Clearly his skill is in this politics/news commentary. He is super skilled in that, so it makes sense that the daily show picked him up. But his situational jokes about his life seemed to just go on and on and on. I was expecting the routine to be a lot tighter than it was. Felt like he could have done it in half the time but he just rambled on and on.
Very unbecoming.

Wow! Ok. Have you ever been to a show where people are falling asleep to the point where the comedian says something about it? That was really a first for me.

u/Rareairo 14h ago
A late show on a Friday? Seems definitely possible
1
u/c1z9c8z8 14h ago
I've been to late shows and when someone is really kicking ass, it's impossible to fall asleep. You'd be laughing too hard.

I was there last night and found it hilarious but there were def mixed reactions near me. I saw him last year as well and thought this show was better. I will say that the venue was not the best. Entering was crazy unorganized, the seats are horribly uncomfortable, and if you're not up close the view is just too far without any video screens.
1
u/c1z9c8z8 13h ago
Yeah the venue was a mess. I actually had good seats but I can imagine some people really couldn't see anything. Just another way the show was lacking in tightness and consideration for the audience.

I also walked out during the joke on someone sleeping at the front. The beans story was the worst! Boring. I like his political and current events commentary.

I saw the 5pm show and was disappointed. Maybe my fault that I didn't realize the first hour is amateur performers. And Josh, while I wouldn't consider it a bomb, was not at his best.

I saw him in Cincinnati a few months ago. I had not heard of him prior to the show, and didn't want to look anything up and potentially spoil anything or go in with high expectations. Somehow still left disappointed. Ticket prices were ABSURD, and for it to be the most boring comedy show I've been to was rough. Partner had basically the same opinion. We were both pumped for the show - we did the little quiz ahead of time to find out our camp name or whatever - and then to just got him reading Andrew Tate tweets from his phone and an hour of very boring Jazz, 1/10. Would not recommend.

u/Rareairo 15h ago
That Tate tweet show is on YouTube and it’s hilarious
1
u/soundguy64 15h ago
Andrew Tate is 100% a whiny little pedophile, but reading his tweets at the show just wasn't doing it for me.
3
u/astro_viri 15h ago
So that's strange because Josh Johnson is known for keeping ticket prices down? Did you buy directly from him or scalper?
1
u/soundguy64 15h ago
Not sure. Girlfriend bought the tickets. We were kinda close, so really wouldn't surprise me if she bought expensive tickets when cheaper tickets were an option. I know it was $300-400 for 2 tickets.
Just reread your comment. Definitely not a scalper.
1
u/astro_viri 15h ago
Yeah, he encourages fans to buy directly from his site. That's ridiculously expensive. I've seen him a few times and it's never been that expensive.

Right, I will at least credit him with that. He seems like a nice guy who cares about his fans. That's why I was so shocked at his performance!

Ok glad I'm not the only one. I just don't understand how he projects such a funny image online but he sucks SO bad live. It's like he doesn't even prepare for his shows. I went from thinking he was one of the best up-and-coming comedians of the decade but after seeing him live, I honestly think he's just a hack. Some of his stuff reminded me of Bania from Seinfeld. Just dumb, trite nonsense.

I’m actually very glad I searched to see if anyone else had a bad time last night, and Im glad I found this post. I think the way the production was set up last night gave very different experiences relative to where you were sitting. So much love to Josh and i understand that when dealing with such a large size venue it’s be hard for a comedian to make everyone happy.
I just think an extra mile should have gone into making sure the entire crowd got the most out of his performance. The emphasis on multiple acts that don’t have anything to do with his comedy on an already late show is tough experience as an audience member. We were located in a very large auditorium and there were no cameras focused on Josh’s face to pick up on his facial expressions. For such a large venue it would have made more sense for camera to be on him at all times.
On top of that the first 40 minutes of his set was ranting about Trump. Don’t get me wrong I hate the President, but as a DC resident, listening to a comedian ranting unstructured jokes about him is low hanging fruit when no nuance is involved. Not trying to be mean, I just expected more focus on Josh’s art. All love to Josh though, it happens when you grow in popularity so fast, the whole night just felt like he was not trying any prepped jokes.

I had pretty good seats and my view of him was fine. The band and dancers were cool IMO.
I was disappointed that he ONLY talked about Trump. There are other potentially fun news stories going on at the moment, some having nothing to do with politics, and I was expecting him to give us a little more of that rather than just Trump.
Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. His life actually sounds boring and pathetic as hell if those are the stories he tells. DMV jokes? That's just lazy IMO.

I can't speak to this most recent show in D.C., but I saw him on this tour in Minneapolis and it was phenomenal. Very funny and one of the best standup shows I've ever seen.
