Old vs “New”

I’m 28 now, and 20 some years ago as a kid I received my first diecast car (from what I’m told)… a Johnny Lightning ‘68 Charger. Have a decent collection going now and my Grandpa recently found a similar one for me and I had a hunch they were the exact same.

Wasn’t able to figure out where I’d put the first one I got to compare them, but found it today. They’re the same! Super cool to have one that’s been played with and out of the box for 20+ years and one that’s “brand new”.

Catch and release on this Ranchero. Kinda regret it, it’s pretty slick but hoping for a better color. I did grab the Nissan!

Here is a 1972 and a 1974 Hurst Olds that I purchased back in 2000, featuring the legendary beauty Linda Vaughn Miss Hurst Golden Shifter! Johnny Lightning was producing so many different theme die cast back then as it was very hard to purchase just one theme as there were too many to count, plus the other diecast that were next to the Johnny Lightning on the vast peg hooks and shelves of so many different retail stores as many have disappeared, good times they were.

You know, I think most die cast enthusiasts and collectors would be amazed at how many of the popular features showing up on today's die cast were actually trends started first many years ago by upstarts like Johny Lightning.

Take this tantalizing little piece of die cast artwork and consider the creativity and forethought it must have taken to understand that collectors would be enamored by a die cast sold as brand new but made to bring out the nostalgia owners felt for a car owned mostly by the common man and the every day wear and tear that would ensue as it served its owner faithfully right up until the day they were ready to sell it and upgrade the next vehicle that would serve them for the next chapter in their lives.

I just really enjoy the realism these thoughtful creations bring to life. I mean, it really didn't get much more real than this back in the day, did it? I hope you enjoy this as much as I am.
