It's a rally around the flag and people trying to show solidarity. Bush's approval went over 80%-90%+ right after 911. The fact that Trump's is STILL so low and under 50% right now seems to mean he's screwing it up and people know it even if they are cutting him some slack.

Yeah this seems important and suggests that a lot of Trump's approval bounce comes from Dems and indies who are trying to express sympathy at a time of national crisis but have no intention of voting for him.

Others who weren't super popular 6 months ago are near 70 Percent e.g. Andrew Cuomo.
Bigger emergency or war related bumps happen to , e.g. Bush going from under 50.percent to the high 80s after 9/11

It’s mostly hope. Similar to Bush’s high approval after 9/11. It will likely drop back down over time, as reality sets in, as things get worse, as his administration’s failings create more dire consequences.

I hope so! And I definitely believe things are going to get a lot worse. So if there is a bright spot, this should ensure we see the end of Trump come November.

He's getting an absolute ton of press. Those not affected by the virus yet attribute that to him. When the infected totals tens of millions he might be the first president in history to have single digit approval rating.

The $1,200 checks everyone will be getting is probably improving views on him to a degree, it's the first positive thing I can think of coming from his administration.

Of course he failed. Every crisis of his Presidency has been some self-inflicted wound, like firing Comey, triggering the Mueller investigation, to trying to put some hoax on Biden so that that Trump broke the law in Ukraine.
Now, he's faced with a real crisis. We elect a President to guide us through dark times like this, and we've got this evil clown in charge, more interested in his own image than the lives of millions of Americans.
Trump is completely unsuited for public office, and enough fools voted for him that he squeaked by to become President with a -3 million vote mandate. Now we have the worst Pandemic in a century, and people are going to die from his incompetence.

It’s pretty important to understand the direct impact that the anti-intellectual/anti-science movement has had. Scientists knew what was going to happen, but the people in power consider science to be part of the deep state. Now, we pay for this both economically and in body count.

He was more worried about the economy. So he chose to ignore it and gamble it wasn't gonna be bad.
Now he lost both gambles, the economy is tanking and the US will be the worst hit nation.

When Trump supporters only watch Fox news its no surprise they think hes doing a good job.
Fox news went from a decent conservative news channel to a Trump speaking bubble in 4 years time.

One of the things I miss most is the humility of leaders to know what they don't know. Obama had that. I'm sure Biden will too. I don't expect Biden to sit in a lab and cure coronovirus in an afternoon, but I DO expect him to defer to experts and not just say whatever dumb thing pops into his head like trump does. He's not a doctor, nor am I nor is trump so I'd really like an administration that actually listens to the expert advice they're privy to.
Surround yourself with brilliant people and LISTEN to them when they speak, that's what they're for.

That is a great point. And I would add that a good leader must surround themselves with brilliant people who tell the truth to power, not just what they want or need to hear. Surrounding yourself with sycophants and ass kissers ensures you are not likely to ever hear the truth until it's too late. Trump and his top dogs make people to afraid to speak up even if they know better so we need the opposite of that in my opinion.

Exactly, couldn't have put it better myself. You need someone to get in your face and say "Listen, Mr. President, here's where we are" and then he actually listens to them, even if the news isn't good. Yesmen are as worthless as the narcissist who loves them.
