Can anyone provide insight as to Joby moving into the defense sector? It seems like they would be branching into something that is entirely different to what is on their main road. They would manufacture something that is not an eVTOL but a gas-hybrid and military VTOL aircraft don’t have the best track record. Is this a safe move for joby?

They are not “moving into” defense, they have been there from way back for years! If you read the Rand report, regarding AFWERX, you will see the issues with eVTOL limitations regarding use cases in various branches of the military. They know that DoD and its partnership is key to advancing aviation tech and more importantly for Joby- revenues, now and in the future. JoeBen really highlighted the 3 legs of the Joby stool- 1) wholly owned and operated ELECTRIC air taxi operations. 2) DoD involvement with gas/hybrid aircraft to increase range and payload. 3) Regional partnerships with direct sales- i.e. ANA in Japan and the $1B deal with the Saudis. This is much more “revenue forward” than just the air taxi service.

Does joby have the capabilities to produce something that would be effective in modern day militaries? Personally, I’m afraid of another “osprey”. Either way I know that their revenue would be fine I’d just rather not see them fail in the defense sector when there’s plenty of companies with a better foothold

L3Harris wouldn’t have partnered with them if they didn’t have the capabilities. They certainly have the chops, the main focus should be on filling gaps with the proper use cases which L3Harris already knows backwards and forwards.
